1. شراً يرى الناس أم خيراً يلاقونا

    وغافلون همُ أم مستفيقونا

    Whether people see evil or good from us,

    While they are heedless or awake,

  2. أمضى على الصلح قوم يعبثون به

    وقد نأى عنه قوم غير ممضينا

    Some violate the peace treaty,

    While others refrain without ratifying it.

  3. تنفس الصعداء اليوم بعضهمُ

    ولم يزل بعضهم أسوان محزونا

    Today the Nile region breathes relief,

    While the south remains grieved and sad.

  4. هل يعرف الدهر حرباً كالتي شملت

    تلك الثمانيَ يتلوها ثمانونا

    Did time know a war like the one that engulfed

    Those eight followed by eighty?

  5. صناعة هي يعتز الملوك بها

    على العباد الأذلاء المطيعينا

    It is a craft kings take pride in

    Over subjugated subjects who obey.

  6. أم كانت المرض الموروث في دول

    أعيت طبائعها السودُ المداوينا

    Was it an inherited disease in dynasties

    Whose cures exhausted the efforts of blacks?

  7. ما كان أكبر آثام الأنام وما

    أزكى وأغلى الضحايا والقرابينا

    What were the greatest sins of mankind, and

    The most precious sacrifices and offerings?

  8. أين الأسرة والتيجان أسألها

    عن الملوك الطغاة المستبدينا

    Where are the thrones and crowns, I ask them

    About the tyrannical despotic kings.

  9. الرافعين على الأشلاء دورهم

    المالئين دماً تلك الميادينا

    Who erected their homes

    And filled those plazas with blood,

  10. جنت على ملكهم أسلاب غيرهم

    فهل تذكر هذا المستغلونا

    Who wrongfully seized the belongings of others

    Do these usurpers still remember that?

  11. أمستغيثين من حرب نفرُّ إلى

    سلم يزيد هموم المستغيثينا

    Or screaming from a war they fled

    To a peace that increased the anxieties of the terrified,

  12. ففي اليمين عهود الصلح خادعة

    وفي اليسار قيود المسترقينا

    In the right, deceitful treaties of peace

    And on the left, the shackles of the enslaved.

  13. أين الشروط وأين العاملون بها

    أم تلك كانت أباطيل المضلينا

    Where are the terms and their executors?

    Or were those the deceptions of the misguided?

  14. أهذه ثمرات النصر يخرجها

    للعاملين الألبّاء البصيرونا

    Are these the fruits of victory produced

    By the sincere enlightened reformers?

  15. لا غالب اليوم إلا من يعين غداً

    ببأسه ونداه المستجيرينا

    None prevails today except one who will support tomorrow

    With his might and vocals the subjugated.

  16. دانت لعسكر ولسون جبابرة

    وأين ما صنعت آراء ولسونا

    Great leaders bowed to Wilson

    And where are Wilson’s judgments today?

  17. أغرى البرية باستقلالهم ونأى

    عنهم وهُم بالذي أغرى يهيمونا

    He lured the desert with its independence but then

    Abandoned it while they wander astray in their illusion.

  18. أيبتغي رجل الدنيا الجديدة ما

    لم يرج من قدم الدنيا النبيّونا

    Does today’s world seek what

    The prophets never aspired for in the ancient world?

  19. وتبدل الأرض غير الأرض متخذاً

    ملائكاً برة هذي الشياطينا

    And the earth changes, not the same earth, taking

    Devout angels instead of these demons.

  20. هواجسٌ ملأ المستبشرون بها

    نفوسهم وتعداها الخليونا

    Obsessions filled the optimists’ souls and exceeded them,

    While the dreamers roamed aimlessly.

  21. والحق في كل عصر فاقد سنداً

    إن لم يجد طلباً بالبأس مقرونا

    In every age, truth lacks support

    Unless demanded through mighty determination.

  22. فذو السلاح هو المرهوب جانبه

    إذا انثنى الأعزل المغلوب مغبونا

    So the armed is the feared whose side

    The unarmed defeated misguided leans.

  23. تغير الناس أخلاقاً ومتجهاً

    تغير الأرض تكويناً وتلوينا

    People changed morals and directions.

    The earth changed formation and color.

  24. صوت القنا والسيوف اليوم يخلفها

    صوت العواطف توفيقاً وتأمينا

    Today the sound of cannons and swords is followed by

    The sound of feelings, accord and assurance.

  25. وللشعوب وقد زالت ضغائنها

    فتح المبادئِ لا فتح المغيرينا

    With the grudges of nations removed,

    The principles, not the conquerors, opened the way.

  26. عقبى الهزائم بل عقبى المغارم ما

    يغدو به ويروح البلشفيونا

    But the aftermath of defeats and losses is what

    Would drive the Bolsheviks back and forth.

  27. تجشّموا في البلاد الظلم وانطلقوا

    بعد المظالم أحراراً مغالينا

    They suffered tyranny in the country and broke free

    After the oppression as noble revolutionaries.

  28. وما رضوا أن يكونوا بعد قيصرهم

    إلا قياصر فيها أو فراعينا

    And they did not accept after their Tsar

    Except to be Tsars in it or knights.

  29. للقوم أعذارهم في كل منقلب

    إن أخطأ القوم أو كانوا مصيبينا

    The people have excuses in every turmoil;

    Whether they erred or they got it right.

  30. ولست أعلم والإنسان متهمٌ

    أمصلحون هم أم مستفيدونا

    I do not know if—while man is blamed—

    They are reformers or opportunists.

  31. نعم الفريق الذي فوضاه هادمة

    بغيَ الفريق الذي سن القوانينا

    Yes, the team that the destroyers delegated,

    Seeking the team that enacted laws.

  32. جنّت بحرية الدنيا العقول فما

    أذكى الجنون وما أوفى المجانينا

    Freedom intoxicated the minds of the world, so what

    A smarter madness and more generous insanity!

  33. للإشتراكية العقبى إذا شملت

    شتى الشعوب وجاراها المجارونا

    Socialism has the aftermath if it includes

    All the peoples and their neighbors.

  34. فلا الكثيرون ملكٌ للأقلِّينا

    ولا الأقلون ملك للكثيرينا

    So neither the multitudes belong to the few,

    Nor the few belong to the multitudes.

  35. ولا نرى واحداً ملأى خزائنه

    بالمغنيات وآلافاً يجوعونا

    We do not see one whose coffers are filled,

    With musical bands while thousands starve.

  36. ولا نرى درة في رأس محتكم

    تهفو إليها قلوب المستظلينا

    Nor do we see a jewel on an arbitrator’s head,

    While the hearts of the oppressed aspire to it.

  37. يا نائلين من الحرب العوان سوى

    ما كان منتظراً منها ومظنونا

    Oh you who gained nothing but

    That expected and assumed from war!

  38. نجوتمُ من رزاياها وما لكمُ

    لا تذكرون رفاقاً غير ناجينا

    You survived its calamities, yet you do not

    Recall those comrades who did not make it.

  39. مدوا الحديد لكم في كل مرحلة

    وذلّلوا لكمُ أطوادها لينا

    They extended the rails for you at every stage,

    And cleared its mounds easily for you.

  40. ورابطوا لأعاديكم على هدف

    وألحقوا النيل بالأردنَّ تأمينا

    And stationed for your enemies a specific goal;

    And joined the Nile to Jordan River securely.

  41. وقلتم الترك قد جاءوا لغزوكمُ

    وقهركم فرددناهم مولّينا

    You said the Turks came to invade and conquer you,

    So we repelled them in retreat.

  42. وكم عتبنا على قوم لأجلكمُ

    وهم إلينا الأحباء المحبونا

    And how we blamed a nation for your sake,

    While to us they are the beloved loyalists.

  43. وقلتمُ لم ينل قوم بغير دم

    حرية فبذلناه مضحينا

    You said no nation gained freedom without blood,

    So we shed it sacrificially.

  44. ونال من دمنا في مصر جندُكمُ

    ما نال منه عداكم في فلسطينا

    And from our blood in Egypt your soldiers gained

    What none gained from it in Palestine.

  45. فهل غسلتم خطايا الأبرياء به

    أم لا تزال خطيئات البريئينا

    Did you wash the sins of the innocent with it?

    Or do the sins of the innocent remain?

  46. أتستهينون بالإنسان ماثلكم

    وتؤثرون عليه الماء والطينا

    Do you belittle people in your presence,

    And favor over them the water and mud?

  47. هبوا حمى مصر والسودان مزرعة

    أيرهق الأجراءَ المستغلونا

    Awake to guard Egypt and Sudan—a farm

    Where laborers are exploited.

  48. ورثتم خصمكم ميتاً وصاحبكم

    حياً وما زلتمُ في الأرض تسعونا

    You inherited your adversary dead and your companion alive

    Yet you still roam the land looking for more.

  49. وقد ملكتم من العمران ناضره

    ورحبه وبذي الشكوى تضيقونا

    You have owned its prosperous civilization,

    Yet you narrow in the one complaining to you.

  50. هل تنكرون عليهم في زمانكمُ

    ما أدركوه تجاريباً وتمدينا

    Do you deny what they attained in your time,

    Of experiences and modernization?

  51. جربتمُ مصر في تقييدها زمناً

    فجربوا مصر في إطلاقها حينا

    You tried restricting Egypt for some time,

    So try freeing Egypt for a time.

  52. أمنتمُ مصر فيما نال أمنكمُ

    فأي شيء على مصرٍ تخافونا

    You secured Egypt in what secured you,

    So what do you still fear for Egypt?

  53. وقلتمُ مصر للهند السبيل فإن

    ضاع السبيل أضعنا الهند ساهينا

    You said Egypt is India’s gateway so if

    The gateway is lost, we lose India, bewildered.

  54. أما إلى الهند إلا مصر من سبلٍ

    ملأى شواهين أو ملأى سراحينا

    Is there any path to India but Egypt,

    Filled with desires or filled with expatriates?

  55. يهدد الهند أهلوه وجيرته

    ولا يزال سبيل الهند مأمونا

    India’s people threaten it and its neighbor,

    Yet India’s path remains secure.

  56. خافوا سوانا وأعطونا أمانِينا

    فما تضرُّ بكم يوماً أمانينا

    Fear us in Sudan and give us our wishes,

    For our wishes can never harm you.

  57. نلقاكمُ بقلوب المخلصين كما

    تلقوننا بقلوب المطمئنينا

    We will meet you with the hearts of the sincere,

    As you meet us with the hearts of the reassured.

  58. مصالح الناس أقوى من عواطفهم

    يداً فهم أينما سارت يسيرونا

    People's interests are stronger than their sentiments;

    Wherever it moves, they move.

  59. فلا تدوم حزازات المعادينا

    ولا تدوم مودات الموالينا

    So the antagonisms of enemies do not last,

    Nor do the friendships of allies.

  60. وطالما عاد خصمُ القوم صاحبَهم

    وطالما أحسن العقبى المسيئونا

    Often a people's adversary becomes their companion,

    And often the evil-doers have a good end.

  61. عسى الذي منح الألمان سلمَكمُ

    ينسيكم أثر الماضي وينسينا

    Perhaps the one who granted the Germans your peace

    Makes you forget the past and makes us forget.

  62. عسى مبدل بأسَ الروم مرحمةً

    للترك يرضيكم عنا ويرضينا

    Perhaps He who changed the might of the Romans to mercy

    For the Turks will make you pleased with us and us with you.

  63. وإن شبراً لِذي حقٍّ لأفضلُ من

    مقاطعات البغاة المستبيحينا

    An inch for one with a right is better than

    The provinces of the oppressive tyrants.

  64. وإن فرداً لذي ملكٍ يبر به

    خير له من جماعات يثورونا

    And a single person fulfilling his leadership

    Is better for him than rebellious groups.

  65. عن أي شيء لمصرٍ تسألون وقد

    هزت مسائل مصر الهند والصينا

    What do you ask of Egypt when its issues have shaken

    India, China, the Hind and Sind?

  66. بالسيف والنار يدعو الناس جندكم

    وتطلبون من الصرعى مجيبينا

    With the sword and fire your soldiers call upon people,

    Yet you ask the fallen to respond!

  67. ضعوا السلاسل عنا واطلبوا جدلاً

    تروا أدلة مصرٍ والبراهينا

    Remove the shackles from us and request a discussion;

    You will see Egypt’s evidence and proofs.

  68. وربما قبلت دعواكمُ دولٌ

    وأهل مصرٍ أباة غير راضينا

    Some nations may accept your call while

    Egypt’s people reject with discontent.

  69. ليت الذي حرم الألمان غايتهم

    أخاف قوماً سواهم لا يبالونا

    If only the one who denied the Germans their purpose

    Would deter nations other than them, not caring,

  70. وليت من زاد قوماً قوة وغنى

    يرعى ويحرس أقواماً مساكينا

    And if only the one who empowered and enriched a nation

    Would care for and protect the poor.

  71. أتسفكون لمظلوم دماءكمُ

    وبالكلام على عانٍ تضنّونا

    Do you shed blood for the oppressed

    While speaking of the needy with resentment?

  72. وهل وفيتم بميثاق لمصرَ كما

    رعيتمُ العهد للبلجيك موفينا

    Did you fulfill the covenant for Egypt

    As you kept the covenant with Belgium, loyal?

  73. كم أعجبتكم من الأحرار عزتهم

    كانوا موالين أو كانوا معادينا

    How you admired the dignity of the free,

    Whether they were allies or adversaries!

  74. فهل ذكرتم وأكبرتم لنا غرضاً

    كما ذكرتم وأكبرتم وشنطونا

    So have you mentioned and exalted for us a purpose,

    As you mentioned and exalted Washington?

  75. كم أنجب البطل الأحداث عالية

    وأنجب الحدث الأبطال عالينا

    How the hero begets lofty events,

    And events beget heroic men!

  76. كنا أمانة دهرٍ عندكم وأتى

    وقت الأداء فهل أنتم مؤدونا

    We were the era’s entrusted with you

    And the time for repayment came, so are you fulfilling?

  77. وقد أقر لمصرٍ كل منتصف

    بحق مصر فهل أنتم مقرونا

    Everyone reasonable has recognized Egypt’s right,

    So are you recognizing it?

  78. وقد أصرت على استقلالها فعلى

    أيّ المآرب أصبحتم مصرينا

    You insisted on its independence, so towards

    What purpose have you become determined regarding it?

  79. أواهبون لمصرٍ كل ما طلبت

    أم آخذون بمقدار ومعطونا

    Are you granting Egypt all it requested,

    Or taking in portions and allotments?

  80. وإن رفعتم عن الوادي حمايتكم

    فما اسم لاحقها فيما تسمونا

    If you lift your protection from the Nile Valley,

    What other name follows it in what you call it?

  81. وإن تروا بدلاً منها محالفة

    فمن لنا بضمانات المساوينا

    And if you consider an alliance instead,

    Who can guarantee us the equals’ rights?

  82. إنا لنعجز عن حق الحليف وعن

    حق الشريك وأنتم تستزيدونا

    We are incapable of the duties of an ally or

    A partner while you take more and more.

  83. وما مجاورة الأقوى وشركته

    إلا كما جاور العصفور شاهينا

    The adjacency of the strong and its partnership

    Is nothing but the sparrow beside the falcon.

  84. ادعوا بني مصر أنداداً لكم ودعوا

    ولاة مصر ملوكاً أو سلاطينا

    Call the people of Egypt your equals and leave

    Egypt’s governors as kings or sultans.

  85. وغادروها لأكفاءٍ تجاربُهم

    تغنيهمُ عن تكاليف المشيرينا

    Leave it to equivalents whose experiences

    Suffice, not requiring advisors’ instructions.

  86. يفدون مصر وإن شاكت منابتها

    وإن جرى نيلها مُهلاً وغسلينا

    They will sacrifice for Egypt even if its crops complain,

    And its Nile runs low and washes away.

  87. وإن تدفق في البيداء منصرفاً

    وإن أقام وراء السد مخزونا

    Even if it flows diverting in the desert,

    And remains stored beyond the dam.

  88. أحرار مصر تباريهم حرائرها

    ففاديات كما نرجو وفادينا

    Egypt’s free men, its free women will match them;

    As we hope, they are the redeemers.

  89. مصليات يجارين المصلينا

    مزكيات يجارين المزكينا

    Praying women matching praying men.

    Purifying women matching purifying men.

  90. وهل رأت مصر قبل اليوم دعوتها

    تثير للنجدات الخرَّدَ العينا

    Has Egypt seen its call stir before today

    The stooped-over helper to the rescue?

  91. خضن السعير إلى الشأو الخطير وما

    حملن إلا التحايا والرياحينا

    They carried the live coals to the serious glory, and they bore

    Nothing but greetings and winds.

  92. وكلما راعت الأهرام مرعدة

    أرحن ما ارتاعها شدواً وتلحينا

    And whenever the pyramids heard the rumbling thunder,

    They relieved what frightened them with anthems and tunes.

  93. هذي مظاهر إيمان النفوس وذا

    حق الجهاد وهذي روحه فينا

    These are manifestations of the souls' faith, and this is

    The truth of struggle, and its spirit within us.

  94. أمستعدون للتوفيق بينكم

    وبيننا اليوم إنا مستعدونا

    We are prepared today for accord between you,

    And us for we are prepared.

  95. تعطوننا مثل ما تعطون أنفسكم

    فتستريحون منا أو تريحونا

    Grant us the same rights granted yourselves,

    So you may rest assured with us or relieve us.

  96. موكولة لسجايانا علائقنا

    وما مرافقنا إلا بأيدينا

    Our relations are up to our passion,

    And our affairs are only in our hands.

  97. نودكم أمة في الأرض طيبة

    ولا نود المعزّين المذلينا

    We wish you a good nation on earth,

    Not degraded and disgraced.

  98. أولى لكم ولكل الناس أنكمُ

    كما نكون على الحسنى تكونونا

    Best for you and all people is that you

    Be as we are in goodness.

  99. يا جامعين وراء البحر أمرهمُ

    ورائحين بنجوى مصر غادينا

    O you who gather their matters across the sea,

    And walk to Egypt with gossip.

  100. باقون أنتم على العهد الوثيق كما

    أنَّا على العهد والميثاق باقونا

    You remain loyal to the solid covenant,

    As we remain on the covenant and pact.

  101. سافرتمُ وقلوب المخلصين لكم

    وبالرجاء إلى الوادي تعودونا

    You traveled while the hearts of loyalists are yours,

    And you return to the Valley hopeful.

  102. الحق في كل واد واجد سنداً

    أضحى بلندن أو أمسى ببرلينا

    Truth in every valley finds support.

    Whether it dawns in London or Berlin.

  103. وحبذا سعيكم في كل مملكة

    وحبذا أهل مصر المستقلونا

    Your efforts are well-intended in every kingdom,

    And best is Egypt’s independent people.

  104. من لم ير اليوم في العمران موضعه

    لم يلق في غده دنيا ولا دينا

    Whoever does not see today his place in civilization,

    Will not find tomorrow a world or religion.

  105. ونحن أولى بأن ترعى مواطننا

    نوفي المكاييل فيها والموازينا

    And we are most qualified to care for our homelands;

    To fulfill the measurements and scales in them.
