1. وداعاً يا أشدَّ النازلاتِ

    وأهلاً بالسعود المقبلاتِ

    Farewell, O most calamitous of adversities,

    And welcome, O forthcoming joys.

  2. كفانا العام أنا منك صرنا

    حديثاً يملأ الدنيا عظاتِ

    The year has sufficed us with troubles from you,

    Filling the world with lessons and admonitions.

  3. تلوح لنا النجاة فإن هممنا

    رأينا حائلاً دون النجاة

    Salvation beckons, so if we strive for it,

    And find barriers in the way to deliverance,

  4. فما جند البوير به أحاطت

    جنود الإنكليز مسددات

    Al-Buwayr could not be contained

    By the besieging English troops with guns aimed.

  5. وقد ضاق الفضاء به وأعمى

    نواظرَهُ دخانُ المرعدات

    The sky was too confined for it, blinded

    By the smoke of blasting explosives.

  6. فمن وجد الفرار من العوالي

    تَلَقَّته صدور الصافنات

    So whoever sought to flee the heights

    Was met by the chests of the swords.

  7. ومن يخضع فمركبه إليها

    ظُبَىً فوق الدماء الجاريات

    And whoever surrenders, his vessel leads him

    Like prey above the flowing blood,

  8. بأكثر من بني مصر شقاء

    لدى نوَبِ الوباء المزعجات

    To more misery than the Egyptians

    When the plague strikes with its annoyances,

  9. ولو غير الوباء انتاب مصراً

    لآثرنا السكوت على الشكاة

    And were it not for the plague that befell Egypt

    We would have preferred silence to complaints.

  10. ثلاثة أشهر يسطو عليها

    ويذهب بالنفوس الغاليات

    For three months it prevailed over it

    And took the precious souls away.

  11. ألوفٌ لو بعثناها لحرب

    لعادت بالغنائم ظافرات

    Thousands whom, had we dispatched to war,

    Would have returned with the spoils of victory.

  12. ولو لبثت بشتى البيد عاماً

    لماجت كالبحار الزاخرات

    And had it lingered slaying in every way,

    It would have surged like the abundant seas.

  13. كأني بالوباء رأى ضماناً

    عليه نقض تدبير الدهاة

    I see the plague found a guarantee

    To foil the schemes of the wicked ones.

  14. فلم نفقد زمان الجهل ما قد

    فقدنا في السنين المشرقات

    So we did not lose what we lost

    In the enlightened years that shone upon us.

  15. وكم ليل قضيت حليف وجد

    وسهد في الضراعة والصلاة

    And many a night I spent devoted, finding

    Solace in worship and prayers.

  16. فإن أغفيت نبَّهني مخيفاً

    صياح الثاكلات الباكيات

    When I dozed off, it startled me –

    The screams of the bereaved weeping women.

  17. فمن أمٍّ مضى عنها بنوها

    ومن أم أصيبت في البنات

    One is a mother who lost her sons,

    Another afflicted in her daughters.

  18. وهذا كان لي جاراً وفياً

    وكانت تلك إحدى التابعات

    This was my loyal neighbor,

    That was one of the followers.

  19. فأحسب أنني في الظهر ميْتٌ

    إذا أبصرت ميتاً في الغداة

    I imagine myself dead in the morning

    When I see a corpse in the daybreak,

  20. وذي هوس يقول لقيت ليلاً

    شياطين المنايا الدائرات

    And a crazed one says I met at night

    The circling demons of death,

  21. بأيديها سيوف لامعات

    كلمع عيونها المتوقدات

    With shining swords unsheathed

    Like their blazing eyes aflame.

  22. فقلت لها انجلي عنّا فهبت

    مروعة هبوب الذاريات

    I said to them: “Begone from us!” and they blew

    Fiercely like the gales of winter.

  23. فكاد الأفق ينطبق انطباقاً

    وكدت أرى الكواكب هاويات

    The horizon almost collapsed,

    And I saw the stars plummeting down.

  24. وما حيل الحكومة في مغير

    به وجد البلاد مرحبات

    Yet the government was helpless to change it -

    Where it lingered it found havens embedded.

  25. إذا ما طاردته في مكان

    رأت منه مراس الراسخات

    And when chased away from one place,

    It saw pillars firmly anchored.

  26. وكان له من الأهلين عون

    عليها فهو موفور الثبات

    It received aid from the locals against them –

    Steadfast, not distinguishing friend from foe.

  27. تساوى عندهم نفع وضرٌّ

    فما عرفوا الحماة من العداة

    When they met the doctors, they took refuge

    And indulged in evil suspicions.

  28. إذا لاقوا الأطبَّاء استعاذوا

    وخاضوا في الظنون السيِّئات

    They showed contempt for medicine

    And thought it a lethal poison.

  29. وأبدوا للعقاقير احتقاراً

    وظنوها سموماً مهلكات

    They said: “Leave us in our homes,

    For death is in the hospitals.”

  30. وقالوا في منازلنا دعونا

    فإن الموت في المستشفيات

    And we have, instead of you,

    Cures and healers to treat us.

  31. وإن لنا من الدايات عنكم

    غنى لعلاجنا ومن الرُّقاة

    Were it not for the scholars’ heedlessness of them,

    They would not have surrendered to overwhelming doubts.

  32. ولولا غفلة العلماء عنهم

    لما تركوا الوساوس غالبات

    When exhorted, they would say: “Seek help

    Through patience and submit to calamities.”

  33. إذا استهدوهم قالوا استعينوا

    بصبرٍ واخضعوا للكارثات

    You see there is no fleeing death,

    So we scoff at medicine and healers.

  34. ترى أن لا فرار من المنايا

    فنهزأ بالدواء وبالأساة

    As for contagion, even if they blame us,

    It is but delusions of the bewildered souls.

  35. وما العدوى وإن نقموا علينا

    سوى وهْمِ النفوس الحائرات

    And if it be a plague, we are protected

    By the blessed Bukhari's incantations.

  36. وإن تك نقمة فقد احتمينا

    بأسرار البُخاري الشافعات

    Our reliance is upon Allah

    And the means that reach Him.

  37. وإن لنا على الله اعتماداً

    وأسباباً إليه واصلات

    My rage increased only from anger

    At the willful submission of the villages.

  38. وما زاد اشتعالي غير سخطي

    على عمد القرى المستسلمات

    They sinned without fearing the complaints,

    Or admitting to those disgraceful acts.

  39. فقد أثموا وما جزعوا لشكوى

    ولا اعترفوا بتلك المخزيات

    No rebel corrupted the innocent

    And inflicted its people with dispersion,

  40. فما متمرد أردى بريئاً

    وجرع أهله مرَّ الشتات

    More gently and kindly than you,

    Destroying the transgressing germs.

  41. وما حذر القضاء وإذ دهاه

    تلقّى منكراً حكم القضاة

    Stern frowns that revived the lives

    Of a people who see your satisfaction as life itself,

  42. بأظلم منهمُ وقد استخفوا

    بتدبير الأطباء الثقات

    And were it not for the shade of your justice,

    They would not have wished to live or feared the evil of death.

  43. فبعضٌ فارق الدنيا وبعضٌ

    تقلَّب في السجون المظلمات

    We see you with eyes filled with light

    And hearts inhabited by love for you.

  44. وبعض راعه منها نذير

    بأن عقابه لا شك آت

    So we forget our loved ones laid to rest,

    Treasures deposited in the graves.

  45. وآخر مطمئن البال يلهو

    برغد العيش لهو الغانيات

    Some of us drive others yearning

    In your path, upon the road of righteousness.

  46. وكلهم شديد الغيظ يخفي

    عداءً للجرائد والرواة

    And we lay down our cheeks in slumber

    When they were sleepless with worries before.

  47. إلينا يا ابن توفيقٍ إلينا

    حميد العود مرجوَّ الأناة

    The faces that were gloomy with what they had of beauty

    When you were away became radiant when you returned.

  48. تداركت البلاد وساكنيها

    وأسكنت القلوب الواجفات

    Our hearts poured out glad tidings, made evident

    By the glowing countenances.

  49. وجلَّيت الهموم كما يجلِّي

    ضيا الشمس الغيومَ الداجيات

    And the once barren land you watered comes back to life

    And shines with the smiling flowers.

  50. فما راعي قطيعٍ غاب عنه

    ليرتاد الوهاد المخصبات

    We are plants your grandfather planted in lands

    Where you have the finest boons, numbered as the plants.

  51. فلما عاد أبصره شريداً

    تمزقه الضواري في الفلاة

    It grew until filled with hope through you,

    And brought good news of the sweetest fruits.

  52. بأكثر منك إشفاقاً ورفقاً

    وفتكاً بالعودي الجائرات

    Excellent is your enduring loyalty, and excellent is

    Your friendship with the Caliph among friendships,

  53. أعباس استعدت حياةَ قوم

    يرون رضاك لذات الحياة

    Seen by Muslims as confirmed,

    Bringing their hopes ever closer.

  54. ولولا ظل عدلك ما استحبوا ال

    بقاء ولا اتقوا شر الممات

    Your striving to please the King and inspire awe

    In those who covet the land preserves the kingdom.

  55. نراك بأعين مُلئت ضياء

    وأفئدةٍ بحبك عامرات

    Your knowledge encompasses all directions,

    Not just some areas.

  56. فنسلو عن أعزتنا وننسى

    نفائس في المقابر مودعات

    Congratulations on seeing the valued crown

    With your own eyes, and your privilege of grants.

  57. ويدفع بعضنا بعضاً هياماً

    بركبك في طريق الصالحات

    He only gave you what your merits deserved –

    Indeed, they are the highest merits!

  58. ونفترش الخدود معندمات

    وكانت في نواك معصفرات

    And the best days are those that allowed

    The finest Caliph the finest governorship.

  59. ذوى ما كان فيها من جمال

    فلما عدت عادت ناضرات

    My hope is to one day see the two Niles

    Joined with the Tigris and Euphrates,

  60. أفضت قلوبنا بشراً فكانت

    أدلته الوجوه اللامعات

    And the flag of the Sultan envelop in love

    The hearts of his fragmented peoples.

  61. وغرس القفر تسقيه فيحيى

    ويشرق بالزهور الضاحكات

    The day his abundant basin is the place

    Where his estranged servants' faces gather.

  62. وإنّا غرس جدِّك في بقاع

    بها لك أنْعُمٌ عددُ النبات

    With this pride the wilderness rejoices,

    And I am graced with congratulatory hymns.

  63. نما حتى امتلأت به رجاء

    وبشَّر بالثمار الطيبات

  64. فنعم ولاؤك الباقي ونعمت

    صلاتك بالخليفة من صلات

  65. رآها المسلمون مؤكدات

    لقرب مناهم المتوقعات

  66. لحفظ الملك سعيك في رضاه

    ورهبة طامع في الأرض عات

  67. وفي كل الجهات لك اطلاع

    على ما شاء لا بعض الجهات

  68. هنيئاً رؤية التاج المفدى

    لعينك واختصاصك بالهبات

  69. وما أعطاك إلا ما استحقت

    صفاتك إنها أعلى الصفات

  70. وخير الدهر أيام أتاحت

    لخير خليفة خير الولاة

  71. رجائي أن أرى النيلين يوماً

    قد اتصلا بدجلة والفرات

  72. وضمت راية السلطان حباً

    قلوبَ شعوبه المتفرقات

  73. وأصبح حوضه المورود مَلْقَى

    وجوه عبيده المتناكرات

  74. بهذا الفوز تبتهج البرايا

    ويجمل بي نشيد التهنئات
