1. ذوي الأمر هل جئتم بمحترم الأمرِ

    ضماناً من الأيام للبلد الحرِّ

    O rulers, have you come with one who honors authority

    As a guarantee from fate for the free country?

  2. وما لهمُ لم يقبلوا شرط غيركم

    وقد عرض الصلحَ البريء من الغدر

    Why did they not accept the condition of any but you

    When innocent reconciliation was offered without deceit?

  3. وهل تستطيعون الوفاء بوعدكم

    وقد سئمته من سواكم بنو مصر

    Can you fulfill your promise,

    When the people of Egypt are weary of all but you?

  4. وكانوا يفكُّون الأسير فأصبحوا

    يُمنُّ عليهم بالفكاك من الأسر

    They used to release the prisoner, but now

    They oblige him with ransom from captivity.

  5. يسخرنا الباغي ويقذف بعضنا

    ببعض ونعطيه السلاح ولا ندري

    The tyrant ridicules us and casts some of us

    Against others, and we give him arms without knowing.

  6. ومشتبه في جهره وعيانه

    يقاتله منا بمتهم السر

    One whose outward speech and essence are suspect

    Is fought by one of us with hidden blame.

  7. فهل يدفن الحيُّ القويُّ ببيته

    وقد بعث الميت الدفين من القبر

    Can the living, strong man be buried in his home

    When the dead buried has risen from the grave?

  8. وهل للقوي العذر في كل ما قضى

    ويبقى الضعيف المستجير بلا عذر

    Can the strong have an excuse for all he ruled

    While the weak seeking protection remains without excuse?

  9. أفي كل أسبوع تمرُّ وزارة

    وتخلفها أخرى تبيع ولا تشرى

    Does every week pass with a ministry

    Followed by another that buys but does not sell?

  10. إذا دام هذا استُوزِرَ القومُ كلُّهم

    وأصبح صدر القوم من ليس بالصدر

    If this continues, all the people will be made ministers

    And the chief of the people will be one without precedence.

  11. تريد مدى غير الذي تحسبونه

    جزاءً على البلوى وأجراً على الصبر

    You want an extent other than what you suppose,

    As recompense for afflictions and reward for patience.

  12. خذوا مسلك الأنفاس قبل سبيلكم

    لحرية الوادي وحرية النهر

    Take the path of breaths before your road

    To the valley’s freedom and the river’s freedom.

  13. أمامكمُ شهرٌ فإما اعتزالكم

    وإما ثبات يدفع الشر بالشر

    Before you is a month, either your resignation

    Or steadfastness that repels harm with harm.

  14. وإن وزير القوم من قام عنهمُ

    بأوزارهم لا طالب الجاه والوفر

    The minister of the people is one who stood for them

    With their burdens, not seeking status and plenty.

  15. وما النار والفولاذ يوماً على الفتى

    بأقوى من الذكرى الرهيبة في الشعر

    The fire and steel were never stronger on the youth

    Than the terrible memory in poetry.

  16. فهل أشهد استقلال مصر فأشتفي

    من الداء في الباقي القليل من العمر

    Shall I witness the independence of Egypt and be healed

    Of the sickness in the little left of my life?
