The people envy me for having

A rich neighbor who helps the needy.

O people, envy belongs to one who

Is far from goodness, a dangerous prince.

It is I who envies, not you,

Is there among you one like me, with insight?

Who sees wealth spent not for virtue

Nor to help a poor man in need.

The poet of the land calls but hears

    Only of corruption and warning.

Like a bird lamenting the echo

In a cage by a flowing stream.

O closest of neighbors without you

I’d not have seen a wretched hearted neighbor.
