أعجب القوم ما كتبت وهالا

كل ذي ثروة بها يتعالى

The people were amazed by what I wrote

All those with wealth feel superior because of it

أنت من يقدر الثراء ويدري

كيف يحيى المثري وينعم بالا

You know the worth of wealth and

How to make it enjoyable and live in comfort

حسبه مسلكاً إلى اللّه أن يس

مع ما قلته ويحذو المثالا

It suffices as a path to God to hear

What I said and emulate the example

لست بالممسك الشحيح ولا المس

رف إلا إذا نصرت الرجالا

I am neither miserly nor extravagant

Except when I help men

بارك اللّه في شباب ملكت ال

نفس فيه فما تتيه اختيالا

God bless the youth who controlled

Their soul, not lost in vanity

إنما تبتغي بمالك علماً

تبلغ المجد عنده والكمالا

You only seek knowledge through your wealth

To attain glory and perfection through it

فاشتهر باليراع إنك كاف

مصر أن تشهر القنا والنصالا

Become renowned for valor, you are able

To unsheathe the spear and sword for Egypt

إنما يؤثر اليراع قديراً

شهد الحرب وابتلى الأبطالا

Only valor makes the brave man noble

Tested in war and among heroes

أنت كابن المعتز فضلاً وآدا

باً وهارون همة ونوالا

You are like Ibn al-Mu'tazz in merit and manners

And like Harun in determination and generosity

طارف يلتقي بخير تليد

ومنار يعلو عماداً طوالا

A fresh stream that meets goodness everlasting

A minaret rising lofty and tall
