يا صاحبي إني نشأت على

كره الدخان وقهوة البن

O my friend, I was raised to

hate smoking and coffee beans

والخمر كنت بشربها كلفاً

وروى الندامى وصفها عني

And wine I would drink elegantly

though the regretful described it away from me

حتى أصابتني بآفتها

زمناً وحل الداء بالبطن

Until its harm befell me

for a time and the illness settled in my gut

ونهى الطبيب فقلت منتهياً

ما أنت أكثر خبرةً مني

And the doctor forbade it, so I said, desisting,

You are no more knowledgeable than me

أصبحت لا يروى صداي سوى ال

ماء القراح وأنه يغني

I've come to be satiated by nothing but

cold water, and it suffices me
