قلب الدهرُ الشؤونا
وتخلّى القائمونا
Time has turned affairs around
And those in charge deserted us
وأتى الأمر كما سا
يره المنتظرونا
Things happened as expected
By those waiting for them
يغضب الراضين عن أم
س ويُرضي الغاضبينا
The satisfied get angry for no reason
And the angry get satisfied
ولقد عاد ضجيجاً
فيه ما كان حنينا
What once was yearning
Has now become a tumult
وطوى المستقبلونا
صفحة المستدبرينا
Those looking ahead
Have turned the page on the past
وهوىً سار شمالاً
وهوى سارٍ يمينا
Some leaned north
Others leaned south
لم نزل في كل شيء
بيننا مختلفينا
On everything we still
Remain opposed
لم تؤلفنا المقاد
ير أمام الغالبينا
Destiny didn't reconcile us
In front of the victors
بدلوا اليوم طريقاً
بطريق يبتلونا
Today they changed the path
To a path that tries us
وأطالوا بين آبا
ء عراكاً وبنينا
And prolonged strife
Between fathers and sons
واشتفى من أهله من
ساءه الأهل سنينا
Those estranged from their own folk
For years met animosity
ولقوا منَّا لَهُم هَ
ذا على هذا معينا
Each found in the other
An ally against this
والذين اضطُهدوا اليو
م غداً ينتقمونا
Those persecuted today
Will seek revenge tomorrow
والذي يشمت في الشا
كي سيلقى شاميتنا
And those who gloat over the miserable
Will encounter gloating themselves
حِيَلُ القوم وما زا
لت ضروباً وفنونا
The people's tricks and scheming
Still turn in their old ways
قد أجادوها شباكاً
وأعدوها كمينا
They set them up like traps
And prepare them like an ambush
عركوا الكل فساوى ال
آخرون الأولينا
They made equals of the last
And the first
ما عرفنا من يزكُّو
ن ومن يتهمونا
We don't know who they acquit
And who they blame
وجزاء الساكنينا
كجزاء الثائرينا
The fate of the peaceful
Is like the fate of the rebellious
وقديماً كان سلطا
نهمُ بأساً ولينا
The old rulers were
Harsh yet kind
جنَّ بالعزل وبالتو
لية الناس جنونا
They warded off madness
By dismissal and appointment
وتلاقوا عند من فر
رقهم يحتكمونا
At the one who divided them
They went for arbitration
حسبوا التغيير تفري
جاً عساهم يسلمونا
They thought change a relief
That might keep them safe
ومضوا فيه بحاجا
تهمُ يبتهلونا
They pursued it frantically
Imploring
أجلاء الخصم ما را
حوا به يحتفلونا
The prominent opponent they placated
Without celebration
من هو المحدث هذا
بينهم هل يعلمونا
Do they know who this newcomer is
Among them?
وفضول ما جرى أم
هو أمر المالكينا
Is it the angel's work
Or the kingdom's affairs?
هبة مرّ سواها
واسترد الواهبونا
A gift went by unnoticed
And the givers took it back
وخداع لم يزل تع
مية للغافلينا
A deception that does not cease
To blind the heedless
أين بالحرية اليو
م لمصر الهاتفونا
Where is freedom today
For Egypt that called for it?
ونصيب الوطن الأق
دس فيما يطلبونا
And the share for the holy land
That they demand?
أي عيش يشتهَى في
حوزة المستعمرينا
What life is there under
The rule of the colonizers?
أربع مرت ولو شا
ءوا لكانت أربعينا
Four decades have passed
When they could have been four
وعسى هذا نذير
يزع المستوزرينا
Perhaps this is a warning
That shakes the ministers
وقضاءٌ بعده يص
طلحُ المختصمونا
And a trial after which
The disputants make peace
إن في الحزبية الآ
فةَ والداءَ الدفينا
Partisanship is the hidden
And chronic disease
ما الذي يصنعه الحا
ضر بعد الذاهبينا
What will the present do
After the departed?
وقرارٌ عهده أم
سبب للآخرينا
A decision whose era
Has passed causes others
إننا للعمل الصا
لح نرجو أن يكونا
We hope proper work
Will be
حسبه أن عطل الدس
تور أو ألغى اليمينا
It's enough that the constitution was disabled
Or the oath undone
راحة الهدنة بين ال
أخوة المقتتلينا
The respite between warring
Brothers
وإذا القانون لم تن
فذْه أيدي الواضعينا
And if the law is not implemented
By its makers
فقديم السابقينا
كجديد اللاحقينا
The old are like the new
The memorizers like the scribes
وصدور الحافظينا
كسطور الكاتبينا
What remains eternal in life
Is the system of reformers
إنما الأبقى على الده
ر نظام المصلحينا
Sound opinion is not possible
Without those who act on it
وصواب الرأي لا يغ
ني بغير العاملينا
We have our ways
Not what newcomers legislate
ولنا سنَّتنا لا
ما يسنُّ الداخلونا
Fear immoderation
Of the ambitious transgressors
خف ما فيه تغالى ال
آملون المسرفونا
Be content with the possible
Foreseen by the moderate
واكتفى بالممكن المُح
تَمَلِ المقتصدونا
Those demanding conditions
End with what they suggest
وانتهى المشترطونا
بالذي يقترحونا
The hasty are now like
The deliberate
واستوى المستعجلونا ال
آن والمستمهلونا
That which they rose high with
Remains conjecture and doubt
والذي طاروا به ما
زال رجماً وظنونا
After cheer, the optimists
Frowned
ولقد يعبس بعد ال
مرح المستبشرونا
Whose is the poetry and clear revelation today?
We, after trying, refuse
لمن اليوم نعد ال
شعر والوحي المبينا
To be submissive
How many we raised through praise
إننا بعد التجاري
بِ لنأبى أن نهونا
And forgot!
We entrusted them with the covenant
كم رفعنا بالأمادي
حِ رجالاً أغفلونا
But found no trustee
What we gave them
وائتمناهم على العه
د فلم نلق أمينا
Did not win hearts or eyes
لم ننل فيما أنلنا
هم قلوباً وعيونا
Those tales have passed
Though they were passions
وانقضت تلك الأحادي
ث وقد كانت شجونا
Where are the leaders of the people
And the allied leaders?
قادة الشعب وأين ال
قادة المؤتلفونا
You have all exercised
The ruler's troubles
كلكم مارس في الح
كم عناء الحاكمينا
What did the few gain
That the many did not?
ما الذي فاز الأقلُّو
ن به والأكثرونا
The most deserving of forgiveness
Are those in command
وأحق الناس بالعذ
رِ ولاة الأمر فينا
Do you ready armies and fortresses
For tomorrow's war?
أتعدون لحرب ال
غد جنداً وحصونا
Many warners have come
From every atmosphere
ولقد جاء بها من
كل جوٍّ منذرونا
Egypt hasn't thought of it
While it occupies the world
لم تفكر مصر فيها
وهي شغل العالمينا
And we will be forced into it
وسنغشاها كحرب ال
أمس عزلاً مكرهينا
Like an unwilling war
Do we know now where
هل عرفنا الآن ما نح
ن إليه صائرونا
We are headed?
I am not of conventions
لست من أهل التقالي
د ولا المتبعينا
Or followers
I was never on one side
لم أكن في جانبٍ حي
ناً وفي آخرَ حينا
At one time, and another later
My principle guided me
ولي المبدأ أرعا
ه وفاءً ويقينا
Faithfully and loyally
It molded me for the noble nation
أبتني للأمة العز
زةَ والخلق المتينا
And steadfast ethic
I see in its unity a whole
وأرى في جمعها الشم
ل لعقباها ضمينا
For its scattered parts
