اليوم يومك وهو المشرق الرَّحِبُ

فخذ نصيبك في الوادي كما يجبُ

Today is your day, so expansive and wide

Take your share in the valley as you should abide

لكلِّ منقلبٍ في مصر موعده

وما خلا لك من نعماء منقلب

For every revolution has its appointed time in Egypt

And the bounties that came to you, revolution brought

مضت وزارتك الأولى محجَّلةً

غراء وهي إلى الأخرى لك السبب

Your first term passed, shrouded and obscure

Murky, yet you were the cause of the next, sure

وأنت في عهدك الثاني الوفيُّ لها

وفيه منك كما في الأوّل العجب

In your second loyal term, wondrous as the first

Your deeds again bring marvel and are rehearsed

وحملك الحكم في ضيق وفي حرج

كخوضك الحرب ما من هولها هرب

Authority's burden in straits and trials you bore

As you bore the hardship of wars and terror before

سلكت فيه سبيلاً قيّماً فدنا

لك البعيد وهان الشائك الأشب

On the straight path you treaded and drew near

The distant, subdued the intractable and severe

أكبرت كل زعيم بين شيعته

تختاره لك معواناً وتنتخب

You made each leader great amongst his band

Choosing as a loyal aide whom you understand

وأنت بالفضل للماضين معترفٌ

وأنت للمقبلين الناصر الأرب

Acknowledging the merit of deeds past

And aiding the future, helper unsurpassed

وما السياسة في كل العصور سوى

صناعة أنت فيها الحاذق الدرب

Politics through the ages is but a craft

Where you are the adept, wise, deft and daft

وثقت من مصر بالعقبى كما وثقت

صيد الشيوخ بها والفتية النجب

Trusting Egypt's future as you trusted

Veterans' and youth's pledges, unabashed

كأنما انكشفت تلك الغيوب لهم

من المقادير وانشقت لك الحجب

The unseen to them was revealed it would seem

Fates uncovered, veils rent, or so they deem

لم تغن عدلك عن شورى هداتهم

هذي التجاريب والإيثار والدأب

Your justice needed no counsel or advice

Years and trials have taught them sacrifice

نور الهدى لهمُ ما أنت رافعه

فيها وزاد المدى ما أنت محتقب

The light of guidance you keep bright

Expanding vistas of hope are in your sight

وحَّدتَ بعد اجتماع الشمل رأيَهُمُ

فأصبحوا وهمُ الأهلون والصحب

Once reunited, you unified their view

Kinship made them one, and devotion to you

محبة الملك الأعلى تؤلِّفهم

كما يؤلف أبرار البنين أب

Praised for good deeds, titles and ranks you drew

His tribute not mere words, but glory true

أثنى عليك بما أحسنت فاستبقت

إلى مكانتك الألقاب والرتب

In one moment of a realm's condition you changed

What eras could not alter, so estranged

شهادة لك منه لم تكن كَلماً

لكنها لك منه المجد والحسب

Your people still await the great works planned

Wonders intended, goals you have fanned

بدّلت في ساعة من شأن مملكة

ما لا تبدّله من شأنها الحقب

Provisions you apportioned, full and fair

Sweet their food and drink without compare

والشعب بعد الذي أسلفت منتظر

من العظائم ما أزمعت مرتقب

No goods but yours were traded there

No profit made but what you prepare

تلك المرافق فيما أنت حافظه

جعلتها فوق ما عدّوا وما حسبوا

Value for value, price for price

The king's silver filled each device

قسمت بينهم الأرزاق كاملةً

فطاب ما أكلوا منه وما شربوا

Their purchases and sales of luxuries fine

Were but a taste of gifts divine

ولم يكن غير ما دبرت مُتَّجرٌ

ولم يكن غير ما قدرت مكتسب

Souls more precious than their wares

Where you lead they go, no cares

الشيء بالشيء في سعر وفي ثمن

وفضة الملك ملء الملك والذهب

Best commerce is an equitable way

No law or scripture can display

وما شراؤهمُ فيه وبيعهمُ

من النفائس إلا بعض ما وهبوا

No want or thirst for God's abode

Provisions overflowed that road

ليس المتاع بأغلى من نفوسِهمُ

وهم بها أينما سايرتهم ذهبوا

You shielded them, undaunted still

Foes dismayed, fears you did quell

وخير ما يُعمِرُ الدنيا معاملةٌ

قضت به الحال لا شرع ولا كتب

Each side takes pride in its assets tallied

The victor you backed, his ranks you rallied

ولم تُصِب في سبيل اللّه ضائقةٌ

نفساً ولا ظمأ فيه ولا سغب

If battle ceases for a span

Panic and noise erupt again

تقاتل الناس فوق الأرض وهي لهم

ملأى بما أنتجوا فيها وما جلبوا

Your ally, the titan at your flank

No gain in trade, but power blank

يخِّربون بأيديهم ديارهمُ

وما بشيءٍ سوى أيديهمُ نُكبوا

Joined in war, your allies profit

Aggressors routed, no loot or forfeit

ماذا يطاول فيها المستقلّ بها

وحسبه في ثراها الماء والعشب

Should you give neighbors friendly accord

Turk, Persian, Afghan, Arab afford

من لم تسعه بلاد اللّه عامرةً

خصيبةً لم يسعه المقفر الخرب

Ties of trade preceded creed and clan

Now urgencies of faith lead the caravan

أقمت دونهم السدَّ المنيع فلم

يَملْ به رعب الخصمين والرهب

Citadels and armies or zodiac signs?

Heavenly bodies, shooting stars divine?

وسرت بينهمُ ثبتاً فما دفعوا

مرماك يوماً بما تأبى ولا جذبوا

The East's refuge for all who implore

The West's barrier, giant gates secure

كلا الفريقين معتزٌّ بعدَّته

وللفريق الذي ناصرته الغلب

Back you pushed the spying patrols

As they crept to make their forceful goals

وإن خلت من مثار الحرب ناحية

يوماً تناولها الإرجافُ والصَّخَب

Your troops replaced their invading soldiers

With letters and speeches your realm smolders

حليفك الضخم من جاراك منفعة

لا من تجاريه حيث الغرمُ والعطب

Perhaps war's tumult and aid you barred

Though heralds of conflict called and jarred

إن سايرت مصر في حرب حلائفها

فغنمها عظة الباغين لا السلب

Better the victor who shuns the fire

Than battle's gambler courting dire

وإن أرادت لهم من جيرة مدداً

فالترك والفرس والأفغان والعرب

Whose might seeks what is beyond his scope

Deceit and guile will only evoke hope

منافع جمعتهم في وثائقهم

قبل الذي يقتضيه الدينُ والنسب

Ambition unfettered by wisdom is vain

Folly pursues it, vigour inane

هذي قلاع وأجناد بأرضك أم

هي البروج السماويات والشهب

Safety assured, what matters the realm?

Steel and flames are not your helm

في حوزة الشرق حصن اللائذين بها

وفي حمى الغرب منها الجحفل اللجب

One spared may regret other's demise

As the world burns, a living sacrifice

رددتَ خلف التخوم الراصدين لها

من بعد ما أوشك الأرصاد أن يثبوا

Egypt makes the greatest peace or war

As foes capitulate or take up arms for sure

أغنتك عن غزوهم بالجيش في غدهم

هذي الرسائل منك اليوم والخطب

After your struggle, duty's reward

Respite comes only after long trial endured

وربما منع الحرب العوان وإن

جاء النذيرُ عتاد الحرب والأهب

Safety secured is the noblest victory

Though the earth quakes and souls flee

خير من الظافر الغلاب مغتنماً

في الحرب من يتوقاها ويجتنب

Trusting in fate, your preparation shows

While the world's people waver and woes

من لم تمكِّنه مما رام قوَّتُه

فليس ينفعه التمويه والكذب

If blood must spill in surging rivers

Honor and rights require such deliverance

من يطلب الأمر بأساً غير مقترن

بالرأي ضاع عليه البأس والطلب

I wish you long life, so my greetings suffice

Hopes draw near and years entice

إذا ضمنت لواديك النجاة فما

يعنيه في غيره الفولاذ واللهب

I immortalize the deeds of men

As nights go by, dispassionate, nor partisan

وقد يشق على الناجي لرحمته

أن يشهد الخلق وهو النار والحطب

With praise I fill the land, my pen their light

Though remote, in the countryside I write

ومصر أكرم صلحاً إن همُ اصطلحوا

ومصر أعظم حرباً إن هم احتربوا

Upright they walk, and my task defined

Is cloaks of eternity for mankind

بعد الجهاد الذي أنت الحفيّ به

حقَّ الثواب وقبل الراحة التعب

Though forgotten, no mention or heir

I live an exile in my own land there

خير الفتوحات ما صُنْتَ السلام به

والأرض ترجف والأرواح تنتهب

No personal vengeance stirs my blood

But for my country outrage floods

والمطمئن إلى الأقدار أنت بما

أعددته وشعوب الأرض تضطرب

No people I approached to justify

Or resented their rebuke, should they decry

إن كان لا بد يوماً من دمٍ سرِبٍ

فللكرامة والحق الدمُ السرب

حسبي لحكمك في واديك تهنئتي

بالعمر يمتد والآمال تقترب

إني أخلِّد آثار الرجال على

مر الليالي وما لي فيهمُ أرب

وأملأ الأرض نوراً من محامدهم

وإنني في زوايا الريف محتجب

يمشون في الأرض أبراراً ومن أدبي

عليهم الحلل الخلدية القُشُب

أعيش في وطني عيش الغريب وإن

فرغت منه فلا ذكرٌ ولا عقب

وما غضبت لنفسي في مساورة

لكنه لبلادي ذلك الغضب

وما ذهبت إلى قوم بمعذرة

وما ضننت بعتباهم إذا عتبوا
