رجعت أنادي الرسم لو سمع الرسمُ

وأسأل عمن شقوتي منه والهمُّ

I have returned to call upon poetry, if only poetry could hear

And ask who caused me such misery and anguish

وكان قريباً من عياني وحوزتي

فأصبحت أرجو أن يقربه الوهم

It was once close to my eyes and in my embrace

So I've come to hope that fantasy might bring it near

لئن كان ظلماً للحمى ما صنعتمُ

فإن سكوتي عنكمُ لكمُ ظلمُ

If oppressing the zeal was your wrongdoing

Then my silence toward you all is also wrong

رجال الحمى لا السخط مغن ولا الرضى

تنكرت الأيام أم ذهب الحزم

Men of zeal, neither rage profits nor contentment

Did the days change or did wisdom disappear?

تشابهت اليوم الأمور وأشكلت

عواقبها حتى استوى الجهل والعلم

Matters are confused today and their consequences obscure

Until ignorance and knowledge seem the same

أتقتتلون اليوم في غدواتكم

وقد شملت أحبابكم والعدى السلم

You battle today in your marches

Though your loved ones and enemies are under peace

وحين أقر الجاحدون بحقكم

يساوره من أهله الفخم والضخم

When the deniers acknowledge your rights

They still doubt in their lavish, pretentious clan

بنت ركنه أيديكمُ واختلفتمُ

فأصبح مرهوباً بأيديكم الهدم

Your hands built its pillar yet you differed

So it's become, by your hands, prone to destruction

وجاهدتم في اللّه حيناً وما لكم

لأنفسكم قد أصبح الجهد والعزم

You strove in God's way once, but no longer

For now the effort and resolve are for yourselves

أسأتم إلى النيل الكريم ولو جزى

مسيئاً جرى منه لوارده السم

You've wronged the gracious Nile, and if it repaid

The evildoer, its water would turn to poison

أكان صواباً أن ينادي هاتف

فيسكته بالبأس مندفع وهم

Was it right for a caller to shout

Then be silenced by surging, reckless force?

وهل كان حزماً أن تقوم حكومة

فيأخذها الطعن المجرح والشتم

Was it wise for a government to arise

Only to be struck by injurious insults?

وهل يسكن القلب الجريء لطاعن

وفيه وجيب مثل ما اتقدَّ الفحم

Can the bold heart be calmed by one who criticizes

When inside it burns like ignited coal?

ولو كان جسم الأبي كنفسه

لأعيى الحديد الحاميَ الدم واللحم

If my father's body matched his soul

The protecting steel would be wearied by blood and flesh

أضر من الفوضى نظام مراغم

وأهون من سوء المعاقبة الجرم

More harmful than chaos is a complaisant system

And lighter than punishment for crime is the crime

وأفضل ممن يقرع الحق سمعه

ويسكت عن تأييده البكم والصم

Better than one who ignores the truth's knocking

Is the mute and deaf who aid it

وإن الذي ترجون والخلف بينكم

أخف أذى منه الحماية والضم

The dispute between you is lighter

Than protection and bondage

فريقان هذا بالعقيدة يحتمي

وذلك تحميه المطهمة الدهم

One group takes refuge in belief

The other is shielded by ominous darkness

أنرضى إليكم بعد هذا احتكامكم

وللشعب بعد الله والوطن الحكم

Can I be content, after your appealing to me

When the people, after God and nation, will judge?

ومن كان رأي الأغلبية رأيه

فكل حديث بعد حجته رجم

Whoever's view aligns with the majority's view

Any talk against his argument is mere throwing of stones

ومن وثقت بالأمر والنهي نفسه

فأليق ما فيه التجاوز والحلم

And whoever's soul relies on commanding right

It is best to respond with forbearance and calm

إذا ساوت الغايات بين جماعة

فكل فتى عون لصاحبه قرم

When goals match between a group

Each lad assists his companion

وإن وجب الإيثار عند مثوبة

فحسب الفتى من دهره لقب واسم

And when selflessness is rewarded

It is enough for the lad to gain a title and name

ومن جعل الزلفى إلى اللّه نفسه

تنزه عن غنم وإن عظم الغنم

Whoever makes his nearness to God his soul's concern

Will rise above plunder, even if plunder abounds

وما ضر لو صيرتم الأمر شركة

فهذا له قسم وهذا له قسم

No harm if you make the matter a joint venture

Where this one gets a share and that one gets a share

ومن لم يجالد منكم فمرابط

ومن لم يكن منكم إماماً فمؤتم

Whoever of you does not quarrel, let him stand guard

Whoever of you is no leader, let him follow

وما ضر لو يبلو النظير نظيره

فإما ثناء بعد ذلك أو ذم

No harm if peer faces peer

Either later praised or blamed

وإما إنتصار رائع أو هزيمة

فينحط من قاد السفينة أو يسمو

Either glorious victory or humiliating defeat

So the captain of the ship either rises or falls

وإن لم تجئ تلك الشروط كريمة

فلا الغصب ممدود إليكم ولا الرغم

If those noble conditions do not come

There is neither imposed power nor enforced compliance

وما الغرم بغي القادرين عليكم

ولكن خذلان الثقات هو الغرم

No shame if the capable overcome you

But forsaking the faithful would be shameful

رثى لكمُ الخصم الشديد عليكمُ

فأصبح يرجو الصلح بينكم الخصم

Your fierce enemy lamented you

And now hopes for reconciliation between you, the enemy

لئن فاتكم في أمسه الرفق والرضى

فما فاتكم في يومه الذوق والشَيم

If gentleness and acceptance escaped you yesterday

Decency and manners have not escaped you today

أخاف عليكم أن تروح أمانياً

شرائط تغدو اليوم وهي لكم حتم

I fear for you that hopes will vanish

Becoming conditions that you'll inevitably face

وهل يرجع الشعب الأبي إلى الثرى

هواناً ومن أغراض ناشئه النجم

Can the proud people return humiliated

When its rising star has appeared?

وهل تتوانى مصر من بعدما اقتدى

بها اليمن الأعلى وتابعه الشأم

Can Egypt hesitate after Yemen on high

And Syria followed its model?

عسى هذه أخرى التجاريب عندكم

فيوقن مرتاب ويرتاح مهتم

May this be the last of your trials

So the doubter believes and the anxious finds peace

فعودوا أمام الدهر صفّاً وأدركوا

بلادكم من قبل أن تنفذ السهم

Return united before fate

And reclaim your land before the arrow strikes

ولا تبعدوا عن جانب عون جانب

فهذا لكم خال وهذا لكم عم

Do not stray far from the side of a helper

For this one is your maternal uncle and that one your paternal

ولا عيد حتى يجمع اللّه شملكم

ويأتلف الأبناء والأب والأم

No celebration until God unites you all

And the sons, father, and mother reunite
