أعد يا فتى الوادي مطافك في القرى

فيومك فيه بعد أمسك عيدُ

Return, O young man, to roam the valleys among the villages

For your day after yesterday is a feast

ولاق من الترحاب في كل جانب

وناحية ما تشتهي وتريد

And meet on every side hospitality and welcome

In every district you desire and seek

وللشهداء الذكريات تعيدهم

فهم حضَّرٌ فيمن جمعت شهود

And memories bring back the martyrs

For they are present among the gathered witnesses

لقد عرف الغلاب ما أنت نائل

وما زال يقوى حوله ويزيد

Defeat knew well what you will attain

And still grows strong around it and increases

وأدرك ما تخفي وما أنت معلن

فما هز وعدٌ عطفَهُ ووعيد

And realizes what you conceal and what you proclaim

No promise or threat made it waver

وهل من له هذي القلوب تحبه

كمثل الذي نار له وحديد

Is there anyone who has these hearts loving him

Like the one who has fire and iron for himself?

وهل تدفع الفتاكَ وهو مدججٌ

معاقلُ عُزْلٌ دونه وجنود

Can you repel the killer while he is armed

With forts of isolation below him and armies?

وهل تدفع الصيحات في غير مشفق

ولو أنها في مسمعيه رعود

Can you repel cries without sympathy

Even if in his hearing they are like thunder?

وهل تخرج المحتلَّ مصرُ وحولها

مغيرٌ قريب يحتذيه بعيد

Can Egypt expel the occupier while around it

Are raiders near emulating those far?

وهل بعد تمهيد الحماة لفاتح

ترد تخومٌ فاتحاً وحدود

After the protectors have paved the way for a conqueror

Can boundaries repel a conqueror and borders?

ولا شمل بين العاملين مؤلف

ولا رأي بين القائلين سديد

There is no unity among the workers

Nor sound opinion among the speakers

أمن أزمات المال أرثي لأمة

وبي من تعاديها مآزم سود

Do I grieve for a nation from financial crises

While disasters of enmity against it are black?

وإنيَ لا أدري أفي مصر سادة

بنو مصر أم هم للنزيل عبيد

Indeed, I do not know if Egypt's masters

Are Egypt's sons or slaves of the settler

وفي كل يوم للغريب تقلبٌ

فهل في انقلاب اليوم منه جديد

And every day there is a change of role for the stranger

Is there anything new in the turn of today?

وهل غيرّ المندوب ما خط قبله

من السيرة النكراء أمس عميد

Did the delegate change what yesterday's

Depraved conduct, long-standing, established?

فإن فك قيداً عن غضاب يروضهم

فما برحت في الملك منه قيود

If he loosened a bond on their wrath taming them

No bond in the kingdom remained loosened by him

نعالجه بالعتب حيناً وبالرضا

عسى أحد الأمرين فيه يفيد

We treat him with blame sometimes, and sometimes approval

Hoping one of the two will benefit

وما هو إلا راصد بشباكه

يخادع أو صعب المراس شديد

He is but watching with his nets

Deceiving or strongly refusing contact

فهل عجزت في مصر كل زعامة

وما أعوزتها عدة وعديد

Have all leaderships in Egypt then failed?

And were its equipment and troops found wanting?

وليس يبالي المستعد لحقه

بحجته أن الغريم عنيد

The one prepared for his right does not worry

That his opponent is stubborn with his argument

ومن قاد جمعاً ليس يدري مصيره

فقد سار فيمن قاد وهو وحيد

One who led a group not knowing its fate

Marched while alone among those he led

إذا فرط الأبناء لم يغن عزهم

بما مد آباء وشاد جدود

If the sons neglect, their might will not avail them

With what fathers extended and grandfathers built

وهل بعد تمهيد الحماة لفاتح

ترد تخومٌ فاتحاً وحدود
