غضبتمُ ورهيبٌ منكمُ الغضبُ

للحق ينزعه باغ ويستلبُ

You were enraged, and your rage was terrifying,

Truth snatches it away, a garden it seizes.

هل السياسة فن من قواعده

عند العتاة الدهاة الختل والكذب

Is politics an art with rules

Among the tyrants, the wicked, the deceitful and the liars?

دعوهمُ وسجاياهم ومؤتمراً

للظلم ما قرأوا فيه وما كتبوا

Leave them and their traits and their conference

Of the injustice they have read and written,

ورابطوا في المضيق الصعب وانتظروا

فيه وفودهم تترى وتنتدب

And they have bound themselves in the narrow, rugged pass and waited

For their caravans to be seen and hired.

وراءكم جيرة زالت خصومتهم

دأبتمُ في رضاهم مثل ما دأبوا

Behind you, a neighbor whose enmity has passed

You have persisted in pleasing them as they have persisted.

وهكذا بينكم يقضي الزمان بما

لم تقضه بينكم قربى ولا نسب

And so between you time rules with what

Kinship and ancestry have not ruled between you.

يا قادة الشرق حسب الشرق تكرمة

وحسبكم هذه الألقاب والرتب

O leaders of the East, the glory of the East suffices you

And these titles and positions suffice you.

إن الألى هربوا من بطشكم رجعوا

يطاولونكمُ من بعد ما نكبوا

The weak who fled from your tyranny have returned

Ambitiously assailing you after their defeat.

مستنجدين بمن أغراهمُ عبثاً

والذنب ما حملوا منه وما ركبوا

Seeking help in vain from one who seduced them,

And the sin they carried and mounted is not their fault.

عودوا إلى البأس بعد اللين فهو لكم

قد يفعل البأس ما لا تفعل الخطب

Return to valor after gentleness, for it is yours,

Valor may do what speeches cannot.

لاحق للشرق إلا في معاقله

والحق منقلبٌ في الغرب مغترب

The East has no refuge but in its strongholds

And truth is overthrown in the West, an exile.

هل يملك الحكم في لوزان خصمكمُ

ودونه في سوى لوزان مضطرب

Can your enemy rule in Lausanne

While below Lausanne there is only turmoil?

ما كان كرزون بالموفي لأمته

ودون ما يبتغيه الهول والنوب

Curzon was no loyalist to his nation

Nor what the terrors and afflictions seek.

ما حجة الخصم والأيام تخذله

على كرام الضحايا بعد ما غلبوا

What is the adversary's argument, and time betrays him,

Against honoring the victims after they were defeated?

إن حاربوكم جميعاً حول موصلكم

تنازعوا دونها باغين واحتربوا

If they fought you all around your capital

Competing and warring over it.

مازيتها الفائض الموفور غايتكم

لكنها الأهل والجيران والصحب

Its abundant, plentiful oil is not your goal

But its people, neighbors, and friends.

لم تألفوا أن ناسا في مساومة

من بين ما يأخذ الباغي وما يهب

You are not accustomed that some people bargain

Between what the aggressor takes and what he grants.

هل يرغب الكرد في استقلالهم زمناً

من بعدما ابتلت استقلالها العرب

Do the Kurds desire their independence for a time

After the Arabs' independence has been tested?

ليس النبيُّ بجدٍّ للألى انقلبوا

إلى المغير على مثواه وانتسبوا

The Prophet is no ancestor to the weak who turned

To the conqueror, revolting and claiming descent.

وهم سبيل إلى البيت الحرام له

وهم إلى المسجد الأقصى له سبب

And they are the way to the Sacred House, which belongs to him,

And they are the causeway to the Farthest Mosque, which belongs to him.

وخارجٍ عبد الدنيا كما عبدت

تلك التماثيل والأصنام والنصب

A slave of the world, as those idols, statues and monuments were worshipped,

In every valley he has a throne built by a hand,

في كل واد له عرشٌ بنته يدٌ

رضوانُها غضبٌ إحسانها تعب

Whose pleasure is wrath, and whose kindness is toil.

He almost throws the doubting councilman

يكاد بالجالس المرتاب يقذفه

تنكُّر القوم والتعريض والشغب

With the people's denial, insinuation, and insolence.

Does he renounce the greatest obedience to rule himself

هل يخلع الطاعة العظمى ليملكه

من ذلك السلب الديباج والذهب

With that plunder of brocade and gold?

And leave the highest assembly for an assembly

ويترك الملأ الأعلى إلى ملأ

كالصلِّ ينساب أو كالذئب ينسرب

Like dripping glue or a slinking wolf?

In my heart is the whispering of conscience, and for me

عندي لأنقرة نجوى الضمير ولي

في مكةَ الشبهات اليوم والريب

In Mecca today are doubts and suspicion.

Hearts incline to the Sacred House, and no tribe

تَهْوِي القلوب إلى البيت الحرام ولا

تَهْوَى قبيلاً على حراسه وثبوا

Leaps against its guards and pounces.

One who lacks a Creator of the varieties and clouds

لم يشك جدباً ولا فقراً فتعوزه

من غير خالقه الأنواء والسحب

Will not suffer drought or poverty.

The secrets of betrayers appeared and became known,

بدت سرائرُ خوّانين واشتهرت

وإن تنكَّر خوّانون واحتجبوا

Though betrayers denied and concealed themselves.

The infant in the cradle is more rational in his clan

الطفل في المهد أزكى في عشيرته

من بالغ شقيت أمٌّ به وأب

Than the adult whose mother and father were miserable.

O Turkish neighbor, the past is an admonition for you

يا جيرة الترك والماضي لكم عظة

جافيتموهم وأغضوا بعد ما عتبوا

You forsook them and turned away after they complained.

Yet they and you are equal in treatment,

فهم وأنتم سواء في معاملة

إن تبعدوا بعدوا أو تقربوا قربوا

If you distance, they distance, or if you draw near, they draw near.

And if your homelands were vacant, they would be satisfied,

ولو خلت لكمُ أوطانكم لرضوا

لكنها لغزاة حولها ضربوا

But they belong to invaders who struck around them.

Did you split or gain independence, and to

هل انشققتم أم استقللتمُ وإلى

حرية أم إلى رقٍّ بكم ذهبوا

Freedom or to slavery did they take you?

If you returned to virtuous conduct, you would have

فلو رجعتم إلى الحسنى لكان لكم

إلى صحابتكم رجعَى ومنقلب

A return and refuge to your companions.

No matter what blessings you seek for yourselves,

مهما طلبتم من النعمى لأنفسكم

فلن تزيدوا غداً عما لكم طلبوا

Tomorrow you will not exceed what they demanded of you.

And a call to the restorer of the East's ways

ودعوة لمعيد الشرق سيرته

ماجت دمشق بها واستأنست حلب

Stirred Damascus and pleased Aleppo.

It traveled like fleets escorting it,

سارت كأن أساطيلاً تشيعها

مثل الجبال عليها الجحفل اللجب

Like mountains over it, the thundering masses.

It crossed India in its range, and its echo returned

تجاوز الهند مرماها ورددها

خلف البحار دويُّ الرعد يصطخب

Behind the seas, the rumbling of thunder raging.

I truly fear for a day upon states

إني لأشفق من يوم على دولٍ

يقضي الحديد عليها فيه واللهب

That iron and flames will end them, by God.

So let no people terrify with what they lost,

فلا يروَّع أقوام بما خسروا

ولا يمتع أقوام بما كسبوا

Nor let any people delight in what they gained.

And a tyrant will seek respite and Hellfire

ويطلب المهل والزقوم طاغية

أمضَّهُ ظمأٌ أو عضَّه سغب

Thirst exhausted him or hunger consumed him.

The kingdoms of East and Islam are a reminder,

ممالك الشرق والإسلام تذكرة

فالشرق أسوان والإسلام ينتحب

The East Aswan and Islam wailing.

Where is the trust and pact between you,

أين الأمانة والميثاق بينكمُ

والبيت منتهب والقدس مغتصب

With the House plundered and Jerusalem usurped?

The glory of men is measured by what they sacrificed

مجد الرجال على مقدار ما بذلوا

من الدم الحر لا الدمع الذي سكبوا

Of free blood, not the tears they shed.

Defending the precious homeland and honor,

ذوودا عن الوطن الغالي وعن شرف

بذل النفوس له بعض الذي يجب

Sacrificing souls for it, which is obligatory.

And whoever desires a noble and pure life of honor,

ومن أراد حياة العز طيبة

فالأرض تحمله حراً أو الشهب

The earth will carry him free or fiery sparks.

O visitor of the East, answerer without support

يا وافدَ الشرق جوَّاباً بلا سندٍ

في الغرب ينتظر العقبى ويرتقب

In the West awaiting consequences and watching.

The fate of each tribe after its journey

مصير كل قبيل بعد جولته

ما خطه في فروقَ الفتيةُ النجب

Is what the noble young men inscribed.

The discourse to them afterwards, tomorrow,

فصل الخطاب لهم بعد القضاء غدا

في سائر الأمر جد القوم أو لعبوا

In the rest of the matter, be earnest or play.

Where is peace? And where are its workers?

أين السلام وأين العاملون له

وأنه أمل الأبرار والأرب

It being the hope of the righteous and devout.

Each extends his goal beyond the unseen

كلٌّ يمد وراء الغيب غايته

وليس يعلم ما يأتي به رجب

And does not know what next month will bring.
