يا آل مصر كفاها ما بها جزعا

أعائدٌ لكمُ الشمل الذي انصدعا

O people of Egypt, enough of your sorrow

I return to you the unity that was broken

جد الزمان ولم يذهب تخاذلكم

إن الذي كنت أخشى منكم وقعا

The eras have passed but your negligence remains

What I feared from you has happened

إن الذي كاد من ماضي مراسكمُ

يرتد عنكم تمادى فيكمُ طمعا

What almost strayed from your past ways

And lingered greedily within you

أيحرس البيت ساه في جوانبه

مضلل وعليل يشتكي الوجعا

Can one who forgot to guard his home

Misguided and ailing, complaining of pain?

طلبتم الغاية القصوى وآفتها

أن تذهبوا فرقاً أو ترجعوا شيعا

You sought the highest goal but its consequence

Is that you part or return as factions

أما يوفِّق في الوادي سياستَكم

هاد كما وفق الآحاد والجمعا

Why doesn’t your politics guide you rightly

Like it guided individuals and the masses?

وكلما قام منكم نابهٌ فطن

إلى الوزارة صحتم حوله فزعا

Whenever one of you rises capably

You flock around him, alarmed

وكلما رامها منكم أخو ثقة

أثرتمُ ريباً واهتجتمُ بدعا

Whenever one you trust aspires to rule

You spread doubts and protest vehemently

للخصم أم لكم المستوزرون به

أقرَّ مَن ضرها يوماً ومن نفعا

Do ministers serve the opponent or you?

Who did it harm one day and who did it benefit?

وما استوى القصد منكم والغلوُّ لها

وليس من راح يغريها كم شفعا

Your intentions and excess zeal do not equate

Not everyone lured by it interceded

خذوا عليه عهود اللّه وانتظروا

لعله خير من أوفى بها ورعى

Make a covenant with God and wait

Perhaps he is better than the pious and devout

أليس في أمسه ذكرى وموعظة

مما رأى غيره منكم وما سمعا

Don’t his past days hold lessons

That others saw and heard?

يرضى وزارتكم فرضاً عليه لكم

وليس يرضى بها مرعى ومنتجعا

He is content with ruling you by compulsion

Not by pasture and respite out of consent

أولى بمن تبعت شوراه أمته

أن لا يكون لباغ حولها تبعا

The one whose counsel his nation followed

Should not have slanderers trail him

لكم عليه رقيب من سريرته

إن لم يجد مشرفاً منكم ومطَّلعا

You have a spy on his conscience

If you do not find him forthcoming and transparent

تربّص الخصم وامتدت حبائله

إلى يقينكمُ بعد الذي انتزعا

The opponent lies in wait as his schemes spread

After what you snatched away with certainty

أنترك الأمر للباغي يصرِّفه

في كل ناحية سنّاً ومشترعا

Will you leave the matter to the rebel to steer

However he wants, a tradition and law?

قد استوى لينه فيها وشدته

كما استوى من تحداه ومن ضرعا

His softness and firmness in it are equal

As are those who challenged and yielded to him

طال النزاع حماة الملك بينكمُ

أماله حاسم من بعد ما اتسعا

The dispute over the king’s guardians dragged on

Did a decisive arbiter emerge after it widened?

كادت تضيع ضحاياه عليه سدى

ويذهب الثمن الغالي الذي دفعا

Its costly sacrifices were squandered meaninglessly

And the precious price you paid was lost

دعوا جميعاً لذاك الخصم حقكم

أو جاهدوا فيه يا أحزاب مصر معا

Relinquish your right to that opponent altogether

Or fight him united, O Egypt’s factions

ما حيلة الأعزل المغبون في شكس

تقلد النار والفولاذ مدَّرعا

What can the powerless duped man do when confronting

Armor and steel fully dressed?

إيمانكم واليقين اليوم عدتكم

وهل رأيتم لطاغٍ مؤمناً خضعا

Your faith and conviction are your weapons today

Did you ever see a tyrant bow in humility?

أيطلب النيلُ يسقي زرعَه رجل

منكم ولا يملك الحقل الذي زرعا

Does the Nile seek a man from you to water his crops

When he owns no field he planted?

خذوا الأمان من الدنيا لأنفسكم

من قبل أن تسألوها الري والشبعا

Take security in this world for yourselves

Before you ask it for prosperity and contentment

تعاونوا وخذوا للأمر عدته

كم يسَّر الحزم أمراً بعد ما امتنعا

Cooperate and prepare the tools for the matter

How much did resolve facilitate a difficult task?

لا يقنع الشرف المنقوص ذا شمم

وإن يكن بعسير العيش مقتنعا

Tarnished honor will not satisfy the high-minded

Even if content with a life of hardship

أين المعيد إلى الوادي غريبكمُ

من النوى والمريح الواله الولعا

Where is the one who returns your exile

To the Nile valley, comforting the ardent lover?

وأين من صنع النعمى لأمته

والعرش غير مباه بالذي صنعا

And where is the one who makes blessings for his nation

While the throne is not ashamed of what he did?

إني سمعت خطيباً وعده لكمُ

دين لعل الرضا فيما دعا وسعى

I heard a preacher promise you

A debt which perhaps pleases by his call and effort

إن لم تنل فئة إجماعكم فلكم

بين الضمائر من ساوى ومن جمعا

If the totality of your agreement is not attained

You have between your consciences those who equated and united

ستحرجون إذا سادت نصيحته

فيكم غريمكم من بعد ما خدعا

You will be embarrassed if his advice prevails

And your opponent rules you after deceiving you
