كتبت إليكم ما استحق مقامكم

ولم أر منكم ما استحق مقامي

I wrote to you what your stature deserved,

Yet I saw not from you what my stature deserved.

وأرسلت قلبي في كلامي فلم أجد

مكاناً لقلبي عندكم وكلامي

And I sent my heart in my words, but found

No place for my heart or words with you.

وحسبيَ من رد السلام قبوله

فيا ليت شعري هل قبلتَ سلامي

It suffices me that you accepted my greeting -

If only I knew, did you accept my greeting?

وإني لأسترعي الزمان ذمامكم

ولستَ بمسترعي الزمان ذمامي

Though I hold back time for your sake,

You do not hold back time for my sake.

أفضلاً رأيتم أم فضولاً مودتي

وما هي إلا شيمتي وغرامي

Did you see excellence in me or excess love?

It is but my nature and passion.

وإني على ما فاتني غير نادم

ولو كان فيه رتبتي ووسامي

I regret not what has passed me by,

Even if in it was my rank and medal.

أعاتبكم عتب الرضى وألومكم

لعل عتابي نافع وملامي

I reproach you with the reproach of contentment,

Hoping my reproach will benefit and advise.

وقد كنت أرجو أن أكون أمامكم

كما أنتم ملء العيون أمامي

I had hoped to stand before you,

As you are the apple of my eye before me.
