1. صاح استمعْ خبراً يبدي لك العبرا

    أمسى حديثَ بني الأشواق والسمرا

    Listen, a tale that shows a moral

    The talk last night of yearning and vigil

  2. فتى من الترك في وادي دمشق رأى

    بين الرياض فتاة تخجل القمرا

    A Turk in Damascus' valley saw

    Among gardens, a girl shaming the moon

  3. أحبها وأحبته فما لبثا

    أن أحدث الحب في قلبيهما شررا

    He loved her and she loved him, before long

    Love kindled flames in both their hearts

  4. تواعدا بالتلاقي فوق منعرج

    عن الورى كان بالأشجار مستترا

    They promised to meet atop a bend

    Hidden from people by trees there

  5. وكان في الحي واشٍ من عداتهما

    فظٌّ غليظ يحب الشر والضررا

    In their quarter was a hateful spy

    Vicious and harsh, loving evil and harm

  6. درى الشقيُّ بسر الوعد بينهما

    وليته ألهم الإرشاد حين درى

    The wretch learned their secret tryst

    If only he was guided when he found out

  7. فبات في الموعد المضروب مرتقباً

    لقياهما ثائر الأحقاد منتظرا

    He waited in ambush for the meeting

    Full of malice, eager and watching

  8. حتى إذا سادت الظلماء لاح له

    ظل يسير الهوينا مقبلاً حذرا

    When darkness fell he saw the two

    Approaching cautiously, loving and shy

  9. فصاح من ذلك الساري فروَّعها

    لِما بدا من تعدِّيه وما ظهرا

    He yelled, terrorizing the lovers

    For his transgression there was clear proof

  10. فأدبرت نحو دار الصب باحثة

    عنه فما علمت من أمره خبرا

    She headed home seeking her love

    But learned no news or trace of him

  11. لكنها إذ رأت مفتاح مضجعه

    في بابه دخلته تتقي الخطرا

    Seeing his room key in the door

    She entered, avoiding danger still

  12. وبعد ذا رأت الغدار مقترباً

    من دار صاحبها كالسيل منحدرا

    Then she saw the traitor approaching

    Her lover's house, like a flood descending

  13. واستبطأت أوبة المحبوب فادرعت

    بدرعه وانتضت بتّاره الذكرا

    Missing her darling, she dressed in his armor

    Seized his sword, that castle's defender

  14. ونازلت ذلك الباغي فما لبثت

    أن جندلته قتيلاً لم ينل وطرا

    She fought the transgressor, and before long

    Struck him down, no mercy did he get

  15. وأطفأت بالدم المسفوك منه لظى ال

    حقد الذي كان في جنبيهِ مستعرا

    With his blood she quenched the blaze

    Of hatred burning hot in his heart

  16. وغادرت في فيافي البر جثتَه

    فأنشب الوحش فيها الناب والظفرا

    She left his body in the wild

    Where beasts' claws and fangs did tear apart

  17. وكان صاحبها في البيت منفرداً

    جم الغرام يقاسي الشوق والفِكَرا

    While her lover home alone remained

    Sick with love, suffering longing and thought

  18. وقام يستطلع الأحوال مضطرباً

    كأنه بتَعَدِّي المعتدي شعرا

    He went out restless, wanting news

    Sensing the aggressor nearby, alert

  19. ضل الطريق التي فيها الفتاة سرت

    فلم يمتع بمرأى وجهها النظرا

    But he lost the path she took

    And could not see his love at all

  20. ثم انثنى فرأى شيئاً يلوح له

    كالبرق يلمع في وسط الفلا سحرا

    Then he saw something shining

    Like lightning flashing on empty plains at night

  21. وكان مَرْئِيُّهُ عقداً لسوسنَ في

    أثناء فتكتها بالمعتدي انتثرا

    It was a lily bracelet, torn off

    As she fought the transgressor, strewn apart

  22. فحار لما رآه فوق رابية

    مخضوبة بدم المقتول حين جرى

    Perplexed at this sign, on bloody ground

    Where the slain oppressor had met his fate

  23. وقال يا عقد أنَّى فرّ قاتلها

    بل كيف فارقت ذاك الجيد والنحَرا

    "O bracelet, how could you, her killer

    Leave that neck and wrist so fair?"

  24. وهام مضطرب الأفكار يبحث عن

    ذاك العدو فلا يلقى له أثرا

    Distraught, searching for the enemy

    But not a trace of him was there

  25. حتى انتهى فرأى في قربه شبحاً

    لما رآه عليه مقبلاً نفرا

    Until he saw nearby a specter

    He shuddered in fear as it drew near

  26. فارتاب في أمر هذا الظل يحسبه ال

    وغد الذي لدم الحسناء قد هدرا

    Suspecting some trick, the bloodied ghost

    He thought, had slain his lovely dear

  27. فقال من وبحد السيف بادرها

    وليتها جاوبته قبلما ابتدرا

    "Who fought with the sword and struck her down?"

    He cried "If only she had replied before!"

  28. خرت صريعة سيف الصبّ صارخة

    وسط الفلاة صراخاً يفلق الحجرا

    "I fell dead by the sword of my love

    Crying aloud amidst the wasteland's roar

  29. قتلتني ساهياً فاقبل مسامحتي

    فلا ترد قضاء اللّه والقدرا

    In my confusion I killed you, forgive me

    Do not reject fate and destiny's decree

  30. فاصح وا أسفي هل أنت صاحبتي

    لا عيش لي وبماضي سيفه انتحرا

    Awaken, my sorrow, was it you my love?

    Without you no life remains, bereft I flee"

  31. بدا الصباح وهبَّ الناس وانتشروا

    فذاع أمرهما في الحي واشتهرا

    Dawn rose, people gathered and spread

    Their tale through the streets renowned

  32. واراهما جدث في وجهه كتبوا

    بيتاً من الشعر يبكي الجن والبشرا

    Seeing them strewn, facing skyward

    A verse was inscribed, to mourn both lovers:

  33. مثوى حبيبين لم يسمح بضمهما

    قصرٌ فضمَّهما قبر به قُبِرا

    "Lovers' abode, none would allow their embrace

    So a grave envelops them in its space"
