خطبت الخطاب الفخم في المحفل الفخمِ

وأعلنت ما تنوي وتملك من عزمِ

You delivered the eloquent speech in the elegant gathering

And declared your intent and steadfast resolve

وقلت فلم تترك مكاناً لريبة

ولا موضعاً للظن فيك وللوهم

You left no room for doubt

No place for suspicion or delusion about you

بشائر بالعقبى لواديك أطربت

وفي كل واد ما يصمُّ وما يصمي

You brought good tidings of fortune to your valleys

In every valley, deafening and hushed whispers

دوت منك في جو البلاد فأفهمت

وكان سماعُ الأكثرينَ بلا فهم

Your words resounded in the land's air but most could not comprehend

While some groups were privately pleased, unmoved by love or gain

وجاءتك بالنجوى وكانت تسرها

طوائف ما هانت لغُرْمٍ ولا غنم

If the learned does not improve through knowledge his character

Then no good in character and no good in knowledge

وإن لم يُعدِّل علم ذي العلم خلقه

فلا خير في خلق ولا خير في علم

You seek from a trusted brother the fair accounting

Far from pretense and innocent of injustice

حساب الأخ المأمون للأخ تبتغي

بعيداً من الدعوى بريئاً من الظلم

You do not want vengeance from a rival by a rival

But justice from the unjust for the oppressed

وما ثأرُ خصم عند خصمٍ تريده

ولكنه حقٌّ على القَرْم للقرم

Every arbitration you pursue succeeds

If untouched by malice and blame

وكل تقاض واحتكام موفقٌ

إذا لم يعالج بالضغينة والذم

Your war is the war of prophets you wage

Strong without sword, numerous without arrow

وحربك حرب الأنبياء تخوضها

قوياً بلا سيف كمياً بلا سهم
