1. يا بلاء السماء والأرضِ مهلاً

    زاد ما عاد منك عندي وجلّا

    O affliction of the heavens and earth, wait!

    No more of you remains for me to endure

  2. أزمتي أزمتي كما هي لا يد

    ري لها القائمون بالأمر حلّا

    My crisis as it is, no hand

    Can find a solution for it

  3. ورهين الديون ما زال للبي

    ع مسوماً برهنه وأقلّا

    The mortgagee still held hostage

    His contract renewed, nothing new

  4. جددوا عقدَه وما جددوا إل

    لا مضيقاً له وقيداً وغلّا

    But more constraints and bitterness

    Payment terms extended, obligation made longer

  5. وأطالوا آجاله وهي حتمٌ

    فأطالوا له الممل المعلّا

    Thirty years seen as a grace

    A favor, kindness from them

  6. ورأوا سخرة الثلاثين عاماً

    نعمة منهمُ عليه وفضلا

    The land takes his strength

    And gives while he's most generous of heart and mind

  7. تأخذ الأرض من قواه وتعطي

    وهو أسخى يداً وقلباً وعقلا

    Watering it with sweat pouring from him

    The sweetest, purest water

  8. ساقياً تُرْبَها من العرق السا

    ئل منه أبرّ ماءٍ وأحلى

    Yet in its fertility he starves and strips naked

    In its fertility he melts and decays

  9. وهو في خصبها يجوع ويعرى

    وهو في خصبها يذوب ويبلى

    How can the meager land revive one who

    Has no means to repay his creditor in full

  10. كيف تحيي بقلة الأرض من لي

    س بكاف غريمه ما استغلّا

    It despaired of paying its debt though he

    Would be relieved to be rid of it

  11. عجزتْ عن قضائها دينَ معيي

    ها ولو يستطيع عنها تخلّى

    Strange that I congratulate on the settlement

    Those who bear the heaviest burden

  12. وعجيب أني أهنِّئ بالتس

    ويةِ القومَ وهي أثقلُ حملا

    It eluded me though I found no way

    To escape it or path to another

  13. جاوزتني وما ظفرتُ بأسبا

    بٍ إلى غيرها ولم أر سُبْلا

    I'm left without benefit after wearing myself out

    In fruitless toil and struggle over it

  14. وتخلفتُ غير منتفع بع

    د فنائي بها عناءً وشغلا

    I know not if the easy has become hard

    Or the hard made easy after this

  15. لست أدري أأصبح السهل صعباً

    بعد هذا أم أصبح الصعب سهلا

    A martyr to hardship and anxiety

    Like a martyr of battles, prisoner and slain

  16. وشهيدُ الخطوبِ ضيقاً وهماً

    كشهيد الحروب أسراً وقتلا

    Who will grant me refuge from those

    Who constantly burden me with debt and count slackness as respite

  17. من مُجيري ممن يكلفني الغر

    مَ مراراً ويحسب العجزَ مطلا

    Setting fire to my crops yet demanding

    Fruit from them, never leaving a shadow

  18. يضع النار في غراسي ويبغي

    ثمراتٍ من الغراس وظلّا

    He who had my favor and good deeds

    Saw my tribulation and fled, deserted

  19. والذي عنده جميلي وإحسا

    ني رأى غمرتي ففر وولّى

    He scorned true companions and relied

    On the adversary, elevating and exalting him

  20. أمنَ الصحبَ فاستخف بهم واع

    تدَّ بالخصم فاصطفاه وأعلى

    Meeting the enemy with might is better

    Than pandering to him with guile and trickery

  21. ولقاءُ العدو بالبأس أولى

    من مجاراته خِداعاً وختلا

    Men's greed for power over us grew

    Until it cast them down and humiliated

  22. طال حرصُ الرجال فينا على الحك

    م إلى أن رماهمُ وأذلّا

    The enemy I often sought to placate

    Now lords over them, makes them submit

  23. والغريم الذي كم التمس الزل

    فى إليهم أضحى عليهم مُدِلّا

    They enabled him to control affairs though he

    Was a vigilant watcher imposing his will

  24. مكَّنوه من المصير وقد كا

    ن على السائر الرقيب المطلّا

    I've borne what fate ordained

    So my reward is blame and rebuke

  25. وتحمَّلتُ ما جنته المقادي

    ر فكان الجزاء لوماً وعذلا

    I've hidden myself though calamity is evident

    I've hesitated though events rush ahead

  26. فتواريتُ والعوادي عيان

    وتوانيت والحوادثُ عجلى

    O men of the times, you've done well what

    You said, and the times call for action

  27. يا رجالَ الزمان أحسنتمُ ما

    قلتمُ والزمانُ يطلب فعلا

    Its mood cleared for you, so you felt

    Content to transform and alter the state of affairs

  28. وخلا جوُّهُ لكم فأمنتم

    للرضى مبدلاً وللحال نقلا

    You guaranteed continued rule, with full

    Authority over matters, beginning to end

  29. وضمنتم بقية الخمس سلماً

    تصرفون الأمور أصلاً وفصلا

    You came together, and some opponents stronger

    In mutual harm and greater injustice

  30. وائتلفتم وبعضُ خصمكمُ أق

    وى لبعض أذىً وأعظم غِلّا

    You solved the debt crisis as you had

    Solved the political crisis before

  31. عالجوا أزمة الديون كما عا

    لجتم أزمة السياسة قبلا

    Regain the poet farmer's mortgaged land

    So he can be independent as you are

  32. واستردوا رهائن الشاعر الزا

    رع كي يستقلَّ فيما استقلّا

    The country cannot bear my poetry unless

    I own in it a house and field

  33. لا تسيغ البلادُ شعريَ إن لم

    أمتلكْ في البلاد بيتاً وحقلا

    I'm deserving of good as long as

    I see all people on earth as deserving

  34. أنا أهلٌ للخير ما دمت للخي

    رِ أرى كل من على الأرض أهلا

    He who endured disasters as a child

    Most deserves tranquility of mind as an elder

  35. والذي مارس الكوارثَ طفلاً

    هو أولى براحة البالِ كهلا

    In my village I confide my complaints

    My writings and poems enough for me

  36. أنا في قريتي أناجي بشكوا

    يَ وحسبيْ نجواي كتباً ورُسلا

    Indifferent, I say not "Would that for myself..."

    Nor say "Perhaps..."

  37. زاهداً لا أقول ليت لنفسي

    كان هذا ولا أقول لعلّا

    Forgiving of time, I see in it

    No weakness, no defect

  38. غافراً للزمان أن لا أرى عو

    ناً عليه ولا أرى فيه خِلّا

    Meeting my needs face-to-face is better

    Than meeting this blameworthy good-for-nothing

  39. ولقائي بحاجتي النار خيرٌ

    من لقائي بها الزنيمَ العُتُلّا

    All who make promises will meet

    Their seekers with lies and deception

  40. كل ما عنده مواعيدُ يلقي

    ها لقُصَّاده كذوباً مُضِلّا

    In my mornings weaker,

    In my evenings greater in ignorance

  41. وهو في غدوتيه أكثرُ عجزاً

    وهو في روحتيه أكبر جهلا

    For others' sake if I seek rights

    For others' sake if I seek justice

  42. ولغيري إذا تقاضيت حقاً

    ولغيري إذا تلمَّستُ عدلا

    The essence of life: to unite

    My people's views and bring harmony

  43. وقصارى الحياةِ أن أجمع الرأ

    يَ لقومِي وأن أؤلفَ شملا
