1. الحكمُ حكمُك راحلاً ومقيما

    والملك ملكك حادثاً وقديما

    Your rule is everlasting, departing and abiding,

    Your kingdom ancient and recent, lasting and subsiding.

  2. أقبل على العرشين والجيشين وال

    قطرين إقبال الزمان وسيما

    Turn to both thrones, both armies and both lands,

    With the grace of time and fortune smiling and chiding.

  3. ضمنت تجاريب الحوادث والنوى

    أن تبلغنَّ الغايتين حكيما

    Experiences have proven, events have shown,

    That you will attain both goals, with wisdom guiding.

  4. إنَّ ابتسامك يوم أبتَ لشارحٌ

    نبأ النجاة وسرَّها المكتوما

    When you smiled announcing salvation's news,

    Its mystery concealed, its secret confiding,

  5. وتحية السلطان برهان على

    أن العواقب لا تسرُّ خصوما

    The sultan's greeting was proof that consequences

    Bring no joy to adversaries colliding.

  6. يعلو على البوسفور قصرك شائقاً

    فيرد كيد المفسدين عقيما

    Your palace rises over the Bosphorus, alluring,

    Repelling the schemes of corrupters backsliding.

  7. مثَّلتَ فيه بُنُوَّةً وأُخُوَّةً

    وأبوة وخؤولة وعموما

    You embodied sonship, brotherhood, fatherhood,

    Bonds of marriage and clan, all providing.

  8. ووهبت أهل الصرب نصحك ناهياً

    عن أن يمدوا الطاغي المهزوما

    You counseled Serbs with good advice forbidding

    Aid to tyrants defeated, forces dividing.

  9. نرمي بهم متمَرِّدَ البلقان إن

    آذى أميناً واستباحَ حريما

    We cast off the defiant Balkan mutineer

    If he offends the faithful, sanctities deriding.

  10. أرضيتَ في السلم الإمام وطالما

    نادى جدودَك يستعين قروما

    You gratified the Caliph; oft he called your ancestors,

    Romans requesting aid, forces colliding.

  11. الشرق يذكر في الحجاز صنيعَهم

    والغرب يذكر ما أصاب الروما

    The East recalls their deeds in the Hijaz; the West, their blows

    Against the Romans, their cities dividing.

  12. لهفي على استقلال مصر وأهلها

    لهف الحريص تذكر المعدوما

    I agonize for Egypt’s independence, its people,

    With yearning like one longing for the departed.

  13. ما لي أرى أعلامها مطوية

    والجند أعزل والحصون رسوما

    Why do I see its banners furled, its soldiers disarmed,

    Its fortresses but ruins, traces abiding?

  14. في الدين والإقليم حاربنا العدى

    حتى أضعنا الدين والإقليما

    For faith and land we fought the foe until we forfeited

    Both faith and land, and set them re-colliding.

  15. لا نلت منه زهرة إن لم يعد

    حرّاً ولا استروحت فيه نسيما

    I gained no blossom if enslaved; took no refreshment

    If winds blew not free, but stifled, confiding.

  16. والنيل إن لم يجرِ باسمك وحده

    في سائر الوادي جرى مسموما

    The Nile, if not flowing in your name alone,

    Flows poisoned through the valley, life dividing.

  17. مراكشٌ في كف أغلب قادر

    لا تسترد بناءها المهدوما

    Morocco in the clutch of usurpers, its structures razed,

    Playthings, though ruins pain them, grief deriding.

  18. يلهو بها حتى تجد وطالما

    قتل الغذاء لعسره المنهوما

    Amusement slaughters earnestness; they perish for want,

    Hungering, provisions scarce, sustenance hiding.

  19. لولا جراحات النفوس تثيرها

    لم نأمن التخدير والتنويما

    But for wounds in our souls that rouse us, we would not dread

    Sedation and sleep, vigilance chiding.

  20. عاتبتهم يوماً فقالوا جاحد

    يستنكر الإصلاح والتقويما

    I censured them one day; they said, an ungrateful dissident

    Who condemns reform and justice, upgrading.

  21. ورددت حكمهم فقالوا كائد

    بالشر يدعو شعبه المذموما

    I refuted their claim; they said, a schemer

    Misleading his people, their repute deriding.

  22. ورووا حديثاً عنك مختلفاً فما

    أروى جديباً أو شفى مكلوما

    They told a different tale of you, but roused no conflict,

    Healed no suffering, no anguish subdividing.

  23. قالو بريءٌ من حماة لوائه

    لا يبتغي استقلاله المزعوما

    They said, “He is innocent of defending his nation,

    Seeks no independence,” pretenses deriding.

  24. حظروا الرجاء وحرموه وأنهم

    لن يملكوا حظراً ولا تحريما

    They banned hope, deemed it forbidden – as if

    Banning or forbidding were in their deciding!

  25. كم أحرجوك ليغضبوك فلم يروا

    عنتاً ولم يصب اللهيب هشيما

    How they embarrassed you, to enrage you! But saw no fury,

    No flames erupting, fiery coals colliding.

  26. وسكنت إذ ملأوا البلاد خوافقاً

    وبوارقاً وصواعقاً وغيوما

    When with discord they filled the land – with lies,

    Delusions, lightning, clouds, and wrath abiding,

  27. أَمُفَجِّرونَ هُمُ لمصرِكَ نيلَها

    والمانحوها نضرةً ونعيما

    You were the wellspring of your Egypt’s Nile,

    Granter of bliss and bounty, fears overriding.

  28. ويبدِّلون سماءَ مصرك غيرَها

    أم يُحْدِثون سوى الأديم أديما

    Would you change her skies for others’? Or fashion

    A new creation, the old fabric dividing?

  29. مولاي إن لديك أمجاداً إذا

    حلك الدجى كانوا لمصر نجوما

    Master, your glories, when darkness falls, are Egypt’s stars,

    Nobles and heroes, pure hearts residing.

  30. نجباء مصر وقائدو أبطالها

    والطيبون مناشئاً وأُروما

    No more a party of yours, but politics itself

    Became the gain to share, the spoils dividing.

  31. لم يصبحوا شيعاً ولكن أصبحت

    دعوى السياسة مغنماً مقسوما

    One leans gently, one coerces; some hope, while others

    Despair, their sorrows overflowing, confiding.

  32. هذا يلينُ وذا يشدُّ وسائلٌ

    يرجو وذو يأس يفيضُ هموما

    Who yields is the best proof against those who imagined

    Tyranny and wrongdoing, honor deriding.

  33. من لان فهو الحجة الكبرى على

    من ظن فينا البغي والتأثيما

    Those who provoked – they gained no land, but wearied

    Of vileness, yearning for dignity, new guiding.

  34. ومن استثار فما أغار وإنما

    سئم الهوانَ الحرُّ والترغيما

    Scarce a year of ordeals before they shamed

    The enthroned one’s breast; he abdicated, hiding.

  35. لم يمض عام الخطب حتى أحرجوا

    صدر المؤله فاستقال سقيما

    The chosen successor came, though recently unwelcome,

    A generous guest in our land so dividing.

  36. وأتى البديل المرتضى في أمسه ال

    مرجوّ ضيفاً في البلاد كريما

    Charged to treat Egypt gently, gracefully,

    As if none but you were her guide, providing.

  37. موصىً بمصرَ تلطُّفاً وتجمُّلاً

    لا يحسبن لها سواك زعيما

    If you wished, she would be a paradise for her people;

    If you wished, for tyrants, an inferno, chiding.

  38. إن شئت كانت للرعية جنة

    أو شئت كانت للطغاة جحيما

    Master, the archer has taken aim, the bowman drawn taut;

    The oppressor fears the oppressed, revenge colliding.

  39. مولاي قد نهض الرميُّ وأدرك ال

    رامي وخاف الظالمُ المظلوما

    They have eaten up your hoped-for pardon, after fate

    Decreed its decree, its judgment overriding.

  40. وكلوا لك العفو المرجَّى بعد ما

    قضت الصروف قضاءها المحتوما

    Heavy on the broken prisoner were his chains,

    So be kind to the broken, mercy guiding.

  41. ثقلت على العاني الكسير قيوده

    لتكون بالعاني الكسير رحيما

    If freedom relieves the captive’s pain, we have not forgotten

    Bones wasting in dust, remembrance chiding.

  42. إن يُنْسِنا ألمَ السجينِ خلاصُهُ

    لم ننس عظماً في التراب رميما

    We do not ask you ready an army, mountainous,

    A formidable navy, forces colliding.

  43. لا نسألنك أن تهيِّئَ عسكراً

    لجباً وأسطولاً أشم عظيما

    What we hope for is our guidance, leadership,

    Advice, instruction, lessons overriding.

  44. إنا لنرجو هدينا ومساقنا

    والنصح والتدريب والتعليما

    That is the greatest opening of conquest, exceeding

    All conquests, even great Abraham's guiding.

  45. هذا هو الفتح الأجل سوابقاً

    ولواحقاً من فتح إبراهيما

    Master, such is my passionate zeal, my peace;

    I make no claim to blamelessness, perfect confiding.

  46. مولاي هذي غيرتي الحرَّى وذا

    سلمي ولست من الملام سليما

    They said “You are an extremist.” I said “No blame

    To one who weeps his rights usurped, justice deriding.”

  47. قالوا تطرَّفَ قلتُ ما ذنبُ امرئٍ

    أسوان يبكي حقه المهضوما

    I complain of oppressors among my foes, as I would

    Complain of loved ones turned hostile, affections dividing.

  48. يشكو غريماً من أعاديه كما

    يشكو ويعذل من ذويه غريما

    By God, were it not said I had despaired,

    And valiant struggle ceased, no bravery guiding,

  49. واللّه لولا أن يقال تقطعت

    آماله وجفا الجهاد سؤوما

    I would keep the silence of one drowned in tears,

    Leave to the ruins their owls, night-birds presiding.

  50. لسكتُّ سكتةَ من يغص بريقه

    وتركت للطلل المحيل البوما

    So rouse yourself the length and breadth of the land,

    Free of wing, shaking it with song, foes chiding.

  51. فاستبق في طول البلاد وعرضها

    حرَّ الجناح يهزها ترنيما
