ادعوا الأعزةَ واصطفوا الأنجابا

وتخيروا الوكلاء والنوابا

Call the dear ones and choose the best,

And pick the deputies and representatives.

يا معشرَ الوادي وفي آفاقه

عِبَرٌ كما تتصفحون كتابا

O people of the valley in its horizons,

There are lessons, as you turn the pages.

ليس الجهاد سوى مجالٍ واحدٍ

أكثرتُمُ لدخوله الأبوابا

Jihad has but one arena,

Yet you made for it numerous gates.

إنا لنرضى ذلك الجدلَ الذي

حولَ السياسة أن يكون صوابا

We would be pleased if that debate,

Around politics, turns out right.

ونود من شتى المبادئ أنها

تغدو إلى غاياتكم أسبابا

We want the various principles,

To become means towards your goals.

وشفيعكم في ذلك الصَخبِ الذي

ساء المسامع أن يعود عتابا

And pleading for you in that clamor,

That pained the ears, to become advice.

حتمٌ على الأكفاء والأنداد أن

يسعوا رفاقاً للحمى وصِحابا

It is incumbent on the competent and peers,

To seek out comrades for the sanctuary and companions.

ساوى الوفاء لمصر بين قلوبهم

وأجلُّهم أثراً أجلُّ ثوابا

Loyalty to Egypt made their hearts equal,

And the most influential of them, most rewarding.

ما آفة الوجدان أن تتفرقوا

شيعاً وأن تتنافسوا أحزابا

The flaw of conscience is not to disperse,

And form factions and parties.

لكنها الشحناءُ تهتاج الأذى

وعواصف الفوضى تثير سبابا

But maliciousness excites harm,

And storms of chaos provoke contempt.

أفما لرهط منكمُ يوماً هفا

من شافعين إذا انتهى وأثابا

Is there none among you who once sighed,

For intercessors when he ended and settled?

فكلوا إلى غده جديد أموره

وضعوا على الماضي القديم حجابا

Set out to a new tomorrow,

And drop a veil on the old past,

واستجمعوا للملكِ والوادي قوىً

تثني المغيرَ وتدفع المنتابا

And gather strength for the king and valley,

That deters the aggressor and wards off the critic.

هذي سياسة من أراد لمصر أن

يجتاز سدّاً أو يشقَّ عبابا

This is the policy of one who wants for Egypt,

To overcome a dam or cleave through a mountain pass.

فإذا تماسكتم أمام غريمكم

منه فككتم أيدياً ورقابا

So if you stand united before your enemy,

You will undo his hands and necks.

وإذا تقاتلتم على الأسلاب من

قبل الوقائع كنتم الأسلابا

And if you fight over the spoils beforehand,

You will be the spoils.

إن كان لا يرضيه إلا ضيمكم

فالحزم أن تبقوا عليه غضابا

If he accepts nothing but your loss,

Prudence is to remain wrathful toward him.

حرية الإنسان حق شائعٌ

فخذوه سلماً أو خذوه غلابا

Human freedom is a common right,

Take it peacefully or forcibly.

اليومَ ترجوكم بلادكمُ وما

أولى الرجاءَ بأن يكون حسابا

Today your country implores you- and what

More deserving of response than a call?

وأضر من أعداء قوم يائسٌ

يدعو العداةَ لقومه أربابا

More harmful than enemies of a people, is one

Who calls the enemies masters of his people.

أولى بهذا النيلِ إن هم ساوموا

فيه بنيه أن يعود سحابا

If they bargain regarding this Nile, and in it

Their children, it should return to being a cloud.

لا يملكون مسيره يوماً ولا

يرتاد إلا الأهلَ والأحبابا

They cannot control its course one day,

And it frequents only the people and loved ones.

في الممكن الميسور عونكمُ على

ما طال مرحلة وعز طلابا

In what is possible and feasible is your aid,

For what is a long journey and difficult pursuit.

بعض المنى يلد الجنونَ وإنما

خير المنى ما وافق الألبابا

Some wishes beget madness, and the best wishes

Are those that agree with the wise.

للشرق عندكمُ الأمانات التي

جعل الكفيل بها له الأحقابا

The East has with you trusts,

Which time has made you their keepers.

ما خادم الأوطان إلا من يرى

في تركه ألقابه الألقابا

No one serves homelands except one who sees,

Leaving his titles as the greatest titles.

لا يجتني ثمراً سوى ما قدمت

فيها يداه ولا يسيغ شرابا

He reaps no fruits but what his hands presented,

And tastes no drink but what he poured.

لا يستوي فوقَ المنابر خاطباً

إلا كما يستقبل المحرابا

He mounts no pulpits as an orator,

Except as he faces the prayer niche.

فمن افتدى الوطن المقدسَ طائعاً

فقد افتدى مأوىً له ومآبا

So one who willingly redeems the sacred homeland,

Has redeemed for himself a refuge and sanctuary.

ذهبتْ طغاة الناس غيرَ بقية

في كل فجٍّ ما تزال ذئابا

The tyrants of mankind are gone except a remainder,

In every rugged valley there still remain wolves.

ملأى بطونهمُ دماً من بعد ما

أكلوا ثمارَ الأرض والأعشابا

Their stomachs filled with blood after they ate,

The fruits of the earth and the plants.

فتخوفوا آراءهم من قبل أن

تتخوفوا الأظفار والأنيابا

So beware their views before,

You beware the claws and fangs.

أولى بعمران الممالك إن خلت

منها العواطف أن تبيت خرابا

More deserving of the kingdom’s prosperity, if it is devoid,

Of passions, is for it to remain in ruins.

يا أهل هذا الحي والعقبى لكم

شيباً أهزكمُ له وشبابا

O people of this alive and lasting neighborhood,

Grey hair has shaken you, both young and old.

لي بينكم ذكرى وما أنا بالذي

جَارى هوىً في باطل أوحابى

I have a memory between you, and I am not one,

Who pursued false desires aimlessly.

هذا أخٌ لكمُ عرفتم جهرَه

وضميرَه والفضلَ والآدابا

This is a brother to you, whom you knew his candor,

And conscience, excellence and manners.

وقد استعد لكل ما ترضون من

حر الجهاد فمن دَعاه أجابا

And he is prepared for whatever you approve,

Of the heat of struggle- so whoever calls him, he responds.

وهو المصرُّ على عقيدته وإن

لاقى مواضيَ دونها وحرابا

He is determined to his doctrine, even if,

He faces past it abysses and battlegrounds.

ماضيه حجته وفي غده لكم

ما يستحق الحمدَ والإعجابا

His past is his proof, and for you in his tomorrow,

Is what deserves praise and admiration.

بحراسة الشورى وتحت ظلالها

ما شاف من نِعمٍ وراق وطابا

With guarding the council and under its shadows,

How excellent and sweet is what he attained.

هل بعد ما طلعتْ ضحىً آمالكم

تلقون في آمالكم مرتابا

After your hopes rose radiantly,

Do you encounter doubts in your hopes?

إني أرى لكمُ مَصيراً ماجِداً

يُرضي الجدودَ ويُسْعِد الأعقابا

I see for you a glorious destiny,

That satisfies the ancestors and makes descendants happy.
