رُبَّ دارٍ بأَسفَلِ الجِزعِ مِن دَو
مَةَ أَشهَى إليَّ مِن جَيرُونِ
Many a home in the shadow of calamity
Is dearer to me than neighbors with power,
ونَدامَى لا يَفرحُونَ بِمَا نَا
لُوا ولا يَرهَبثونَ صَرفَ الَمنُونِ
Whose joyless people neither cheer their gains
Nor dread misfortune's turning of the tide.
قَد سُقيت الشَّمُول في دارِ بِشرٍ
قَهوَةً مُرَّةً بِمَاءٍ سَخينِ
I've been served bitter coffee in the house of Bishr
With scalding water, when I little wished it.
