Our drinking is not tainted by cowardice, though

Nausea and sickness may be granted us.

I summon young men like swords, among them

No weakling, none assigned a lesser role.

    أَخَلفَ نَوءٌ عَن وَبلِهِ وبَلُوا

    White-skinned, though the winter rain

    Breaks over them, and they are drenched, they bear it;

They do not flinch from the steep path though

The caller urges them to descend and camp.

In the melee of horsemen there must

Be left to them on the battlefield a hero.

The down on his cheek is still sparse -

A seething mass, whom missiles cannot check.
