1. وأَرَى ذا العَيشِ لا تُحرِزُهُ

    لَمعَةٌ تَعمُرُ أو غَيبُ وَطَن

    I see this life cannot be kept

    By splendor dwelling or a homeland left

  2. هَل لَهُ إن لَم يَمُت في قَعَصٍ

    مِن غِنَاهُ غَيرُ قَبرٍ وكَفَن

    What has he, if he dies not in hardship

    Save riches no grave or shroud can heft

  3. بَينمَا يَغبِطُهُ أَشياعُهُ

    قَلَبَ الدَّهرُ لَهُ ظَهرَ المِجَن

    While his loved ones envy what he kept

    Time turned its back and threw him to grief
