فسمونا والفجر يضحك في الشر

ق إلينا مبشراً بالصباحِ

We were named, and dawn was smiling in the east

Bringing us the good news of the morning

والثريا كراية او كجام

أو بنان أو طائر أو وشاح

The Pleiades like a goblet or a cup

Or chestnuts or a bird or a scarf

وكأن النجوم في يد ساق

تتهاوى تهاوي الاقداح

As if the stars were falling from the hand of a drinker

Falling and falling like cups

وجمعنا بين اللواحظ والرا

ح وبين الخدود والتفاح

We brought together flirtation and comfort

And cheeks and apples

وشممنا بنفسج الصدغ حتى

طالعتنا من الثغور الاقاحي

We smelled the temple’s violets until

We were aroused by the lips’ smiles

زمن فات بني لهو وشرب

وغناء وراحة وارتياح

A time gone by, my son, of amusement and drinking

And singing and comfort and relief

معقلي نهر معقل فإن ارتح

ت الى منزل فدير نجاح

If you take shelter in Mu'allaq’s river, O Mu'allaq then sail on

And my life contained in wine

وحياتي بما حوته الى الخم

ر مصروفه أو الملاح

Is spent whether legally or illegally

My ships are like Lu'ma’s which my boon companion relates

مركبي مثل لمتى ادهم جو

ن ويحكيهما نديمي وراحي
