ليلة للعيونِ فيها وللأس

ماعِ ما للقلوبِ والآمالِ

A night for eyes in it and for companionship

A night wherein the eyes and listening ear

What's for hearts and hopes to hear

Find all that hearts and fondest hopes hold dear;

نُظِمَت للنِّدامِ فيها الأماني

مثل نَظمِ الأميرِ شمسِ المعالي

In it wishes were strung for regret

Where wishes were strung for the joyful company,

Like the stringing of the prince the sun of glories

Like the verses of Prince Shams al-Ma'ali.
