إذا أنت لم تَزرَع وأبصرتَ حاصدَاً

ندمتَ على التفريط في زَمَنِ البَذرِ

If you did not plant and saw a harvester,

You would regret missing the season of sowing.

إذا شئتَ أن تستَعرَ المالَ مُنفقاً

على شَهواتِ النفسِ في زَمَن العُسرِ

If you wanted to borrow money to spend

On the self's desires in times of hardship,

فَسَل نَفسكَ الإنفاقَ من كنزِ صَبرِها

عليك وإنظاراً إلى زمنِ اليُسرِ

Then ask yourself to spend from the treasure of its patience,

Waiting for the time of prosperity.

فإن فعلتَ كُنتَ الغَنَّي وإن أبَت

فَكُلُّ مَنُوعٍ بعدَها واسعُ العُذرِ

If you did this you would be wealthy, and if it refused,

All things forbidden after it have ample excuse.

وما الفقرُ إملاقُ الكريمِ ولا الِغنَى

وإن ضَلَّت الآراءُ في كثرةِ الوَفرِ

Poverty is not the destitution of the generous, nor wealth itself;

Opinions go astray in times of abundance.

وبعضُ الغِنى تمحُو المعائبُ حُسنَه

ويَخلُصُ طبعُ المرءِ في حالةِ العُسرِ

Some wealth’s flaws are erased by its beauty,

And a person’s nature is purified in times of destitution.
