1. وما سلب الشمسَ الكسوفُ ضياءَها

    ولِكنَّها سُدَّت عليها المطالعُ

    And the eclipse robbed not the sun of its brightness,

    But the horizons were veiled unto it.

  2. وكم كُربةٍ كانت وسيلة فَرحةٍ

    وضُرٍّ تُرَى في حافَّتَيه المنافعُ

    And how many a sorrow was the source of gladness,

    And how much weal lurks in the skirts of bale.

  3. وليس ملوماً مَن تعالَت هُمومُه

    إذا أنزلَته بالَحضِيضِ القوارِعُ

    And thou'rt not to be blamed if sorrows assail thee

    When fate hurls thee down from fortune's tall pile.
