My country prospered by your hands, and was moved
By you, through clouds of joy and grief alike,
You brought a life so sweet and finely wrought
As to seem fair in the eyes of this young age.
Your memory’s still delicious in my mouth,
The charms of verse wherein a beauty lies,
And truly, if I’ve tarried from your side,
‘Tis but my sight and wisdom have betrayed me.
For if I dated life’s first dawn, ‘twould be
The day your feast day shone before my eyes.
