1. طَحا بِهِ في الحسان الغِيد حَيثُ طَحا

    قَلبٌ عَلى العَهدِ مِن لَمياءَ ما بَرِحا

    He wandered in beauty where the bright banner waved,

    A heart true to its vows though friends reproved.

  2. هَيفاء تُخجل غصنَ البانِ مُنعَطِفاً

    وَالريمَ مُلتفتاً وَالظَبيَ إِن سَنَحا

    A doe whose languid gaze the boughs abashed

    And made the browsing deer and onager start.

  3. صِغر الوَشاحين رَيّاً الحجل ما سَفَرت

    إِلّا أَغارَ سَناها الشَمسَ وَقتَ ضُحى

    The water-skins were small when she unveiled

    Lest sunrise mar her charms when day was hot.

  4. رُودٌ تُخَطِّرُ في بُردَي صِباً وَهَوىً

    وَتَنثَني التِيهَ مِن سُكر الصِبا مَرَحا

    Cool brooks that bubbled brightly over pebbles

    And swayed, made drunken by the water's play.

  5. سَقى الصِبا وَالشَبابُ الرُوقُ وَجنَتها

    ماءً مِنَ الحُسنِ مَغبُوقاً وَمُصطَبَحا

    The morning breeze and tender youth had watered

    Her soft cheek with clear draughts at break of day

  6. حاوَلتُ رَشفَ اللَمى مِن بَرد رِيقَتِها

    أُطفي بِهِ مِن لَهيب الوَجدِ ما لقَحا

    I strove to sip the wines her mouth distilled

    To quench in me the flames desire had lit.

  7. فَأَعرَضت لِبياضٍ لاحَ قائِلَةً

    يا بُعدَهُ مُنتَبِذاً عَنّا وَمُطَّرِحا

    But she averted to a whiteness, saying,

    "How far the hoped-for union now deferred!

  8. هَيهاتَ وَصلُ الحِسان الغانيات وَفي

    لَيل الشَبيبة صُبحُ الشَيبِ قَد وَضَحا

    Alas that the fair morn and tender twilight

    Of youth should end in aged evening's gloom!"

  9. فَقُلتُ وَالعَينُ شَكرى وَالفُؤادُ بِهِ

    رَسٌّ أُكابِدُ مِنهُ الوَجدَ وَالبَرَحا

    I said, while passion and my heart beside

    Burned for the maid, "Hard severance I endure."

  10. ما ذاكَ عُوفيتِ يا لَمياءُ مِن كِبَرٍ

    إِنّي وَطَرفِ الصِبا المَقرور ما قَرَحا

    "Nay, 'tis no eld, my dear one, that appears.

    My youth still smiles beneath the wreath it wove.

  11. وَإِنَّما نُوَبُ الأَيّام جئنَ بِهِ

    كَما تَرَينَ وَدَهرٌ طالَ ما اِجتَرَحا

    Misfortunes sent by time have brought to me

    What you behold, and time goes on its way."

  12. غَدَت تُكَلِّفُني فيهِ العُلا شِيَمٌ

    وَعَزمَةٌ لا تَني تَنحوهُ حَيثُ نَحا

    Now she reproves me if I fall from greatness,

    Urging ambitions that disdain repose,

  13. وَهِمّةٌ لَيسَ تَرضى النَجمَ مَنزِلَةً

    تُعزى لِقَلبٍ إِلى العَلياءِ قَد كَدَحا

    Aspiring thoughts that scorn a star their goal,

    A heart that climbs to loftiest destiny.

  14. وَمَنطِقٌ تَنظِمُ الجَوزاءُ رُؤيَتَهُ

    لَكِن بِوَصفِ عِمادِ الدينِ قَد كَدَحا

    A speech whose phrases Sirius' self might scan

    Yet finds no flaw in its pure eloquence.

  15. مَولىً مَآثرُهُ تَستَغرقُ المِدحا

    لِذاكَ يَقصُرُ عَنها كُلُّ مَن مَدَحا

    So many problems of perplexed minds

    He clears, so many mysteries revealed!

  16. مِن سادَةٍ وَرِثوا العَلياءَ وَاِقتَسَموا

    مَآثر المَجدِ فيما بَينَهُم مِنَحا

    His fingers hold a pen whose flourishing

    You watch in wonder-lines as straight as reeds.

  17. مِن كُلِّ أَزهرَ بادي البشر غُرّتُه

    تَلُوح في مُدلهمّاتٍ دَجت وَضُحا

    His steps leave prints across the dusty page

    Like flowers in a garden no breeze stirs.

  18. يُبدي مُحيّاً يُريكَ البَدر طَلعَتُهُ

    يَغُضُّ مِنهُ حَياءً كُلُّ مَن لَمَحا

    The lion in his wrath, the clouds in their weeping,

    The deep seas in their swelling, and harsh Fate

  19. إِلى شَمائِل تَندى كَالرِياض إِذا

    ما وابلُ المُزنِ فيها دَمعَهُ سَفَحا

    His open hand outdoes in bounty, his true word

    In faith, when gifts and promises are weighed.

  20. إِمام أَهلِ التُقى وَالعلم شيمَتُهُ

    بَذلُ النَدى مِن أَيادٍ سَيبُها رَشَحا

    Say to the man who hopes his worth to match,

    "Accept your loss, be counseled now to yield."

  21. تَغدُو الأَمانيُّ حَسرى دونَ هِمّتِهُ

    إِذا يَروحُ عَلى العَلياء مُقتَرِحا

    Excellence in the world is apportioned

    By God who rules the throne, according to His will.

  22. فَلُذ بِهِ طَودَ عَلمٍ لَو تُوازِنُهُ

    هِضابُ رَضوى عَلى مِقدارها رَجحا

    And here is one born of imagination's daughters,

    A heart enraptured only by your songs.

  23. يُريكَ مِن لَفظِهِ الكَشاف إِن نَطَقَت

    عُليا بِلاغَتِهِ ما يُخرسُ الفُصَحا

    Imagine her a garden dressed in light's mantles,

    Where dawn has loosed theBucket in the trees.

  24. فَكَم بِهِ مِن مُشكلٍ لِلفَهمِ قَد وَضَحا

    وَمُقفَل بِدَقيق الفِكرِ قَد فُتِحا

    A hand like snow has let theBucket down

    And birds sing out from every branch in joy.

  25. لَهُ يَراعٌ إِذا يَعلُو أَنامِلُهُ

    شاهدتَ أَروع بِالخَطيَّةِ اِتَّشَحا

    A beggar hoping you will condescend to write,

    Regain a fortune that avarice lost.

  26. وَإِن مَشى في أَعالي الطِرسِ مَرقَمُه

    تَخالُ أَرقمَ وَسط الرَوضِ فاهُ شَحا

    Guardian of virtue in a land of cities

    Whose throngs the wastes and wilds itself has spawned,

  27. ما الليثُ إِن جَرحا وَالغَيثُ إِن رَشَحا

    وَالدَهرُ إِن سَمَحا وَالبَحرُ إِن طَفَحا

    Where hypocrites feign ignorance, pretending

    To miss the meaning clear in eloquent words,

  28. أَمضى شَباً مِنهُ أَدنى مَنهُ وَقع فِدىً

    أَندى يَداً مِنهُ أَوفى مِنهُ إِن سَمَحا

    You never feared the askers at your door

    Nor roving Arabs racing their mounts at dawn.

  29. فَقُل لِمَن رامَ في فَضلٍ يُماثِلُهُ

    أَقصِر عَدِمتُكَ وَاقبَل نُصحَ مَن نَصَحا

  30. إِنّ المَعالِيَ ما بَينَ الوَرى مِنَحٌ

    مَقسومَةٌ وَإِلهُ العَرشِ قَد مَنَحا

  31. وَهاكها مِن بَناتِ الفِكرِ غانِيَةً

    فُؤادُها لِسوى مَغناكَ ما جَنَحا

  32. تَخالها رَوضةً غَنّاءَ قَد لَبِسَت

    مَطارفَ النُورِ في أَعطافِها وَشَحا

  33. حَلَّت عُرى الدَلوِ فيها لِلجَنوب يَدٌ

    بَيضاءُ وَالطَيرُ في أَغصانِها صَدَحا

  34. مِن عَبدِ رقٍّ تَرَجّى أَن تُكاتِبَه

    فَضلاً لِيَرتاض دَهر بَعدَما جَمَحا

  35. لا زِلتَ تَحمي حَريمَ الفَضلِ في بَلَدٍ

    بِهِ أُناسٌ لِبُهم القاع إِذ سَرَحا

  36. تَظاهَروا بِنفاق الغَيِّ بَينَهُم

    حَتّى اِدّعاهُ عَلى مَكروههِ الفُصَحا

  37. ما أَمَّ ساحَكَ طُلّابٌ وَما حَمَلَت

    غَوارِبُ الإِبلِ الغادينَ وَالرُوَحا
