أَلا أَبلِغ بَني عَمرٍو رَسولاً

فَإِنّي في مَوَدَّتِكُم نَفيسُ

Shall I not send a messenger to the clan of 'Amr

For I cherish your friendship and hold it dear

فَما أَنا بِالضَعيفِ فَتَظلِموني

وَلا جافي اللِقاء وَلا خَسيسُ

I'm no weakling to be wronged by you

Nor aloof from you all, or mean and drear

وَلَكِنّي ضَبارِمَةٌ جَموحٌ

عَلى الأَقرانِ مُجتَرِئٍ خَبوسُ

But I am fierce and daring 'gainst my peers

Assailing the valiant, though discreet and leery

أَفي حَقِّ مُواساتي أَخاكُم

بِمالي ثُمَّ يَظلِمُني السَريسُ

Is this how you repay your brother's cares?

By taking my wealth as the nights grow bleary
