قَرَّبنَ كلَّ صَلَخدىً مُحنِقٍ قَطِمٍ
عهوٍ لَهُ ثَبَجٌ بِالنِيِّ مَضبورُ
He brought together every frowning, gloomy-browed misanthrope,
A fool with a mantle woven with guile.
فَإِن تَبَدَّلتَ أَو كَلّأت مِن رجُلٍ
فَلا يَغُرَّنكَ ذو أَلفَينِ مَغمورُ
So if you were to change or backbite any man,
Let not one with two thousand deceive you.
حَتّى إِذا أَنجَدت أَرواقُهُ اِنهَزَمَت
وَاِعتَقَّ مُنبَعِجٌ بِالوَبلِ مَبقورُ
Until when his notable pillars collapsed,
And a swollen stream burst with ferment.
وَكَركَرتهُ الصَبا سَبعين تَحسَبُه
كَأَنَّه بِحِيالِ الفَورِ مَعقورُ
And the morning star spun it for seventy years,
As if beside the Fawr dunes, pegged down.
