To the son of Yazid the benevolent, my she-camel spent the night

In Sowran, trodden by mounts and tried,

Complaining of its shade and finding it oppressive, as though it were

The survival of Ghattat at the dark end of night, feeling his way along.

The slender she-camels of Qais ibn Ailan have become emaciated

With them the provisions - though provisions are exhausting -

They greet the pure drops of dew overflowing

When the sturdy male is too dignified to overflow.

Then after that time has passed, a time of separation,

And a tribesman has kindled a fire with every kind of kindling,

With a dyed garment whose train covers the shoulders -

Its weaving was for Dawood, it has not been worn threadbare -

The one with the oath, then the meadow, the meadow of Falajah,

With its tall palm trees of every 'Ays and Ghaytal.
