ألذ من صحبة القناني

أو اقتراح على قيان

More delightful than drinking with boon companions,

Or more exhilarating than wine,

لكز فتى من بني لكيز

يهدي له أهون الهوان

Is a lad of the tribe of Lakiz,

Who offers him the most precious gift.

أهوى له بازل خدب

يطحن قرنيه بالجران

I love his prominent cheek bones,

That grind down his opponents with a millstone.

فنال منه ثؤور قوم

باليد طوراً وبلسان

He attained glory for his people’s banners

With his hand and tongue.

وكان يفسو فصار حقاً

يضرط من خوف مضرطان

He was excellent, and thus in truth became

Petrified with fear like a bellowing camel.
