ويا حي قبل الكل حي لذاته

بغير افتقار منه للحيوية

O Ever-Living before all life, Living of Himself

Without needing life from another,

ويا حي لا شيء سواه حياته

فيلزم فقر الذات للمعنوية

O Ever-Living, none but His life exists,

So all souls need His spiritual essence,

ويا حي معط كل حي حياته

مجازاً وحي نفسه بالحقيقة

O Ever-Living, Granter of life to all the living,

Metaphorically and truly the Giver of life to Himself,

ويا حي لا عن مبدء لحياته

ولا منتهى يأتي على الأبدية

O Ever-Living, without beginning or end to His life

Or finality that could limit His perpetuity,

ويا حي من قبل الوجود وضده

هما نسبتا خلق وترك مشيئة

O Ever-Living, before existence and its opposite,

Both related as acts of creating and ordaining will,

ويا حي محيي النفس بعد فنائها

وباعث عين النشأة الأولية

O Ever-Living, Reviver of souls after their extinction,

Raiser of the eye of primal creation,

ويا حي يحيي الأرض من بعد موتها

بلا أثر في خلقه لطبيعة

O Ever Living, Reviver of the earth after its death,

With no imprint on His nature from creating physics,

تولت حياتي في اغترار بظاهر

وفي نكبة أعقابها ألف نكبة

My life was misled by attachment to appearances,

And so stumbled into countless pitfalls,

تولت حياتي جاهلاً متجاهلاً

أخوض والهو في مقاصد شهوتي

My life went ignorantly, ignoring the Real,

Caught up in the ends of my passions and desires,

افض لي من فيض اسمك الحي منعشاً

يعجل من رمس الشقاوة بعتثي

So pour on me from Your Name’s eternal fount,

Reviving me, to heal the brand of misery on my soul,

يصب حيا الأسرار والنور والهدى

وينفخ روح العلم في بشريتي

Flowing with life’s secrets, light and guidance,

Breathing the spirit of knowledge into my humanity.
