1. O One, everlasting in the oneness of Your Essence,

as You were before all before and all pre-eternity.

  2. Exalted are You! The oneness of the Essence is no unity

that can be reduced to decomposition and parts.

  3. Nor is the oneness of the Attributes a unity of natural constitution:

    it transcends accidents and substantiality.

  4. You, my God, are the One, the Real; as for all else,

its ascription of oneness is only figurative.

  5. Your Being was established before the indivisible atom;

whatever admits of composition is not truly one.

  6. So grant me the vision of Oneness, annihilated

beyond all plurality in eternal Singularity.

  7. Make my being single, free of a being that bars me

from the Everlasting One, the very Being of Reality.

  8. And make my inward purity and my unity firm upon tawḥīd,

for whoever stands steadfast never strays from its signs.

  9. My God, the manifestation of pure Oneness—

the workings of the Real reveal it in every mote.

  10. From creation You raised a witness to wisdom

against nonbeing; then every bond of association dissolved.

  11. Thus no conscious selfhood, coming after an origin,

can admit among its attributes any share of Oneness.
