1. لن ترضيَ اللّه حتى تخلص الورعا

    ولن ترى ورعاً بالجهل مجتمعا

    You will not please Allah until you adopt devoutness

    And you will never see devoutness coexisting with ignorance

  2. حق العباد فرض لن تؤديه

    إن كنت تجهل مفروضاً وممتنعا

    It is an obligation to fulfill the rights of His servants

    If you do not know the obligatory and the forbidden

  3. أمانة اللّه تسطيع الأداء لها

    إذا علمت بعون اللّه ما شرعا

    You will be able to fulfill the trust of Allah

    If you know, with the help of Allah, what He has legislated

  4. ولم يُجدْ صانع اتقان صنعته

    حتى يكون على علم بما صنعا

    No artisan has ever perfected his craft

    Unless he was knowledgeable about what he has created

  5. ومن مضى في طريق لا دليل لها

    ولا معالم تهدي ضل وانقطعا

    And whoever walks a path without proof or landmarks to guide

    Has gone astray and become disconnected

  6. وفاقد العين محتاج لقائده

    لولاه لم يدر مهما جار أو سدعا

    The blind person needs his guide

    Otherwise, he wouldn't know whether he encounters a wall or a cliff

  7. فاستنهض النفس في إدراك ما جهلت

    حتى ترى العلم في حافاتها سطعا

    So motivate yourself to gain knowledge of what you are ignorant of

    Until you see knowledge radiating from your horizons

  8. فهذه النفس مرآة جبلتها

    ما قابلت كائناً إلا بها انطبعا

    This self is created like a mirror

    Whatever it faces, it reflects

  9. مضيئة الذات والأكدار عارضة

    لنورها فإذا استجليته انصدعا

    Luminous in its essence while the rust is incidental

    When you polish it, the rust falls off

  10. والعلم أشرف ما أوليت من خطر

    ما حل في موضع اللّه فاتضعا

    Knowledge is the most honorable thing I have been endowed with

    Wherever it settles, it humbles itself to Allah

  11. فاطلبه للّه يفتحه بلا تعب

    لا تحتجز غير ما يرضى به طمعا

    Seek it for the sake of Allah and He will facilitate it without hardship

    Do not covet anything other than what pleases Him

  12. واليسر يصحب مرتاد العلوم إذا

    كان ارتياداً عن الأكوان منقطعا

    Ease accompanies the frequenter of knowledge if

    His visits are detached from all creatures

  13. والعلم بحر محيط لست محصيه

    فكن بأنفعه في الدين مقتنعا

    Knowledge is a boundless ocean I cannot encompass

    So be content with what benefits religion

  14. ولو فرضنا انحصار العلم في بشر

    وقصده غير وجه اللّه ما نفعا

    Even if we assume that the confinement of knowledge in people

    And seeking it for other than the sake of Allah benefits

  15. فاصرف إلى اللّه وجه القصد معتقلاً

    عقائل العلم فالانسان حيث سعى

    Then direct your pursuit to Allah, upholding

    The beliefs of knowledge, for man will end up where he aspires

  16. والعلم باللّه أولى ما عنيت به

    وما سواه إلى إدراكه نزعا

    Knowledge of Allah is the most worthy of your occupation

    And anything else leads to reaching Him eventually

  17. فابغ المعارف آلات لصنعته

    بكل علم يعيش العبد منتفعا

    Seek all beneficial knowledge as tools for your devotion

    So that the servant lives benefiting from every knowledge

  18. فاطلب واطلق بلا قيد ولا حرج

    وقف إذا كان عنه الشرع قد منعا

    Seek and unleash yourself without restrictions or hardship

    And stop if religious law prohibits it

  19. وقدم العلم بالطاعات تقض به

    حقاً لمحظوره أو ما إليه دعا

    Prioritize knowledge of acts of worship through which

    You fulfill an obligation or respond to a call

  20. دع المهندس في الأشكال مختبطاً

    وصاحب النجم يرعى النجم إن طلعا

    Leave the engineer absorbed in shapes

    And the astronomer observing the rising stars

  21. واقصد فقيهاً بنور اللّه مشتعلاً

    يريك ما ضاق عنه الجهل متسعا

    And seek a jurist whose heart is lit by Allah’s light

    Who shows you what ignorance has restricted

  22. فلا يهمك يوم الحشر هندسة

    ولا سؤال عن المريخ كم قطعا

    So do not worry, on the Day of Judgment, about geometry

    Or questions about how far Mars has traveled

  23. ولن ترى من كتاب خطه ملك

    يوم القيامة إلا الذنب والورعا

    You will not see, from the book of the King

    On the Day of Resurrection, anything but sins and devoutness

  24. فاعمل بعلم واشغل كاتبيك به

    فلا يفوتك ما تملي وما جمعا

    So act with knowledge and occupy your two recorders with it

    So you do not lose what you have dictated or collected

  25. لا تنفق العمر بطالاً فلست ترى

    يوم الندامة للأعمال متسعا

    Do not spend your life in vain, for you will not see

    On the Day of Regrets, any time left for deeds

  26. في لمحة العمر امكان ومزرعة

    وسوف يحصد في عقباه ما زرعا

    In the blink of an age is potential and a farm

    What you plant, you will harvest in its aftermath

  27. إذا حشرت بلا علم ولا عمل

    عرفت كونك بالتفريط منخدعا

    If you are gathered without knowledge or deeds

    You will realize you have been deceived by negligence

  28. أدرك بقية أيام تمر بلا

    مهل فإن نجاز العمر قد قرعا

    Seize the remainder of passing days without

    Respite, for the fulfillment of life has come knocking

  29. وأيقظ العز إن نامت لواحظه

    في الجد للّه لا وهناً ولا هلعا

    And awaken your honor if its guard has slept

    Seriously seeking the pleasure of Allah, not weak or panicked

  30. واصرف حياتك من بدء لخاتمة

    في علم دينك للقرآن متبعا

    And spend your life from beginning to end

    Pursuing knowledge of your religion by following the Quran

  31. هو المهم الذي ترجى عواقبه

    إن مت أحياك أو قدمته شفعا

    It is the essential matter whose consequences

    You hope for, whether it resurrects or intercedes for you

  32. مزية العلم أعلى نعمة رفعت

    عبداً ولولاه لم يذكر من ارتفعا

    The merit of knowledge is the loftiest blessing

    That raises a servant, without which he would not be mentioned or exalted

  33. ما فوق مرتبة المختار مرتبة

    ولا وساعة تسمو فوق ما وسعا

    No rank exceeds that of the Chosen One

    Nor any moment that surpasses what his night journey encompassed

  34. وكل علم لمخلوق تقدمه

    أو سوف يعقبه من بحره نبعا

    And every knowledge belonging to a creation

    Comes from and will be followed by a stream from his ocean

  35. وكل ذرة نور أو مقام هدى

    فمن مشارق نور المصطفى طلعا

    And every speck of light or station of guidance

    Emerges from the horizons of the light of Mustafa

  36. وكل ذلك والقرآن يأمره

    قل رب زدني علماً فوق ما جمعا

    And still the Quran commands it:

    “Say, my Lord, increase me in knowledge over what I have grasped.”

  37. لأن للعلم شأناً كل مرتبة

    وكل شان رفيع دونه اتضعا

    For indeed, knowledge has a status for every level

    And every profound status is humble before it

  38. والنفس قابلة للازدياد فلا

    تضيق عنه اتساعاً كيفما اتسعا

    The self has the capacity for increase so it does not

    Constrict depending on its vastness, however much it expands

  39. فارقمه في لوحها واجعله مرشدها

    إلى حقائق أعمال لها وضعا

    So imprint it on its tablet and let it guide you

    To the realities of deeds in their proper places

  40. فلتطلب العلم للأعمال يخدمها

    كالسيف يحمله للضرب من شجعا

    So let it seek knowledge for deeds to serve it

    Like a sword carried by the brave for striking

  41. ماذا تريد بعلم لا يردك عن

    شر ولست به للخير متبعا

    What do you want with knowledge that does not deter you

    From evil nor make you pursue good by following it?

  42. ليس الحمار من الأسفار يحملها

    بغير أثقالها إياه منتفعا

    A donkey who carries burdens is not benefited

    Unless it carries loads that benefit it

  43. بئس المثال لمن أوعى العلوم ولم

    تفده إلا فلان عالم برعا

    Pitiful is the example of one who memorizes knowledge yet

    It did not benefit him; only so-and-so is a scholar who mastered

  44. وإن طلبت به الدنيا فموبقة

    أحرى بها من خسيس الجهل أن تقعا

    If you sought the world through it, it would destroy you

    It would be more fitting for it to befall a base ignorant one than you

  45. جدره من كل شيء لا يشاكله

    ما أقبح العلم مهما قارن الطمعا

    Its worth, from everything, is matchless

    How ugly is knowledge wherever greed accompanies it

  46. واشرف العلم ما يهدي لصالحة

    تكون ذخراً وما عن سيىء ردعا

    And the noblest knowledge guides to righteousness

    That becomes a treasure and deters evil

  47. ليس السيادة في مال ولا نشب

    لكنها العلم مهما رافق الورعا

    Sovereignty lies not in money or youth

    Rather, it lies in knowledge wherever devoutness accompanies it

  48. للّه نخبة أبرار فقدتهم

    كانوا الأمان فأبقوا بعدهم فزعا

    To Allah belong an elite of the righteous whose absence

    Would leave alarm, so they left safety after them

  49. كانوا البحر فأبقوا بعدهم يبساً

    كانوا السحاب فأبقوا بعدهم قزعا

    They were an ocean, so they left after them a desert

    They were clouds, so they left barren gaps after them

  50. صحبتهم وغيوث العلم هاطلة

    وفارقوني فضن الغيث وانقطعا

    I accompanied them while torrents of knowledge poured

    And they left me, so rain has diminished and stopped

  51. أولئك القوم ملح الأرض إن فسدت

    فأين هم وفساد الأرض قد قرعا

    Those people were the salt of the earth, if it were corrupted

    Then where are they while corruption pounds on the doors?

  52. ما للمعارف من أفلاكها نزلت

    والآن حلت بطون الأرض والتلعا

    Why have the celestial spheres of knowledge deserted

    And now taken up the bellies of the earth and its mountains?

  53. من لي بهم في زمان بعض موعده

    رفع العلوم وهذا العلم قد رفعا

    Who will bring them back to me in an age

    Some of whose promises were to elevate knowledge, now elevated

  54. ورفعه موت من يبغي به عملاً

    براً ولو حل فيمن ضل وابتدعا

    And it was elevated by the death of those who

    Sought to act through it in righteous and good ways

  55. عسى لطائف روح اللّه منشئة

    بعد الاياسم سحاباً يمطر الطمعا

    Perhaps subtle hints from Allah's Spirit will build

    After despair, clouds that pour hoped-for rain

  56. فتنجلي غبرة الأيام عن خلف

    صدق يقوم بنفع الحلق مضطلعا

    Unveiling the dust of days upon successors

    Of truth who undertake serving and benefiting people

  57. فإن لي أملاً في فنية نجب

    وريثما حاولوا إدراكه خضعا

    For I have hope in an excellent posterity

    Who, in attempting to attain it, have submitted

  58. تناولوا المجد من أركان سالفهم

    برق الفضيلة في أعطافهم لمعا

    They have grasped glory from the pillars of their ancestors

    The lightning of merit has flashed in their horizons

  59. لهم وجوه مصابيح مشعشعة

    كأنما الدر في أغصانها طلعا

    I heard they have an ambition as radiant as the sun

    So that every dear goal under it bows

  60. نُجدٌ أماجدُ في أحسابهم فلق

    ومن أياديهم البيضاء قد نبعا

    They have stood up to fate and the days boldly

    With the grace of free men, thus rushing forth

  61. زهر المناقب ينشق المجاد بها

    عن حاجب الشمس أو عن صبحها انصدعا

    They have composed a necklace of glory by their unity

    Remaining, to the eyes of Allah, united

  62. مثل الكواكب في علم وفي عمل

    وفي قلوب وفي صيت لهم شسعا

    Reaching for glory is hard, but they have reached out

    And grasped it without hesitation or fatigue

  63. تنافسوا في اقتناء المجد واستبقوا

    والكل جلى لمجد ليس مخترعا

    Congratulations, you night travelers, as you have

    Revived glory whether it was granted or denied

  64. سمعت بهم همة كالشمس نيرة

    فكل هم عزيز تحتها ركعا

    The chosen ones of free men continue to be picked

    Even in the times of one with grim face, until befalling you

  65. وناصبوا الدهر والأيام كالحة

    بفضل حرية الأحرار فاندفعا

    You were the shining gem within it, none having perceived

    Among you, whether complete or hearing of it

  66. ونظموا عقد مجد باجتماعهم

    لا زال عقداً بعين اللّه مجتمعا

    We have the glad tidings as glory gives us the good news

    Of the most Bountiful in pride if He refuses

  67. تناولُ المجدِ صعب غير أنهم

    تناولوه وما شدوا له النعسا

    And a future will come in which your ambition

    Will be followed without limit by glories not yet fulfilled

  68. بخ بخ يا سَراةَ المجد إنكم

    ذكرتم المجد ما أعطى وما منعا

    You are the tongue of truth testifying for me

    That you have attained the loftiest summits

  69. ما زال ينتخب الأحرار في زمن

    مقطم الوجه حتى فيكم وقعا

    When you felt ignorance was a deficiency

    And that knowledge elevates overpowering ignorance however subdued

  70. فكنتم الغُرةَّ الزهراءَ فيه ولم

    يبصر بأكمل منكم لا ولا سمعا

    You established a school for the religious sciences

    Like a halo, radiating light and benefit

  71. لنا الهناء بأن المجد بشرنا

    منكم بأكرم من في مفخر نزعا

    It has encompassed a pure-hearted youth

    More immaculate than jewels in oysters sealed shut

  72. وإن مستقبلاً يأتي لنزعتكم

    من دون حصر المعالي ليس مقتنعا

    Thirsty to acquire knowledge when they understood

    That ignorance rules like forbidden menses

  73. وإنكم لسان الصدق يشهد لي

    وصلتم من حبال العرف ما انقطعا

    Bearing fruits of struggle, their main concern

    Is to worship Allah in the most legislated way

  74. ومن شعرتم بأن الجهل منقصة

    والعلم يعلي برغم الجهل ما اتضعا

    Unrestricted minds were revealed to them

    The necessity of knowledge, so they complied, following

  75. أسستم لعلوم الدين مدرسة

    كهالة الشمس أنواراً ومنتفعا

    With vigor and determination unmatched by

    Any opposing tide, as if the sea surging forth

  76. ضمت شبيبة اطهار نفوسهم

    أصفى من الدر بالأصداف ملتفعا

    Glad tidings to you, O carriers of knowledge, for yours

    Is a day ignorance will withdraw defeated

  77. تعطشوا لاكتساب العلم إذ فهموا

    كون الجهالة في حكم الحجى شنعا

    And you will be blessed with enlightened minds

    That Allah protects from abominable heresies!

  78. مثمرين ذيول الجد همهم

    أن يعبدوا اللّه بالوجه الذي شرعا

    O my pillars, O torrents of the earth, you suffice!

    The angels’ blessings and benefits upon you!

  79. أوحت إليهم عقول غير قاصرة

    ضرورة العلم فانقادوا لها تبعا

    Will you accept me as one of your men

    That we may live upon this success together?

  80. على نشاط وعزم لا يعارضه

    معارض فكأن البحر مندفعا

    You have been specified with the epitome of nobility—

    Will you permit us to keep the regulations?

  81. بشراكم يا وعاة العلم إن لكم

    يوماً سيرجع فيه الجهل منهزعا

    I still call to the likes of your awakening, and so

    You men of virtue have listened!

  82. وتسعدون بألباب منورة

    يصونها اللّه أن تستمرىء البدعا

    May Allah make firm your hearing and increase

    Your progress in the high pursuits—no star has ascended above

  83. يا عمدتي يا غيوث الأرض حسبكم

    مسح الملائك تبريكاً ومنتفعا

  84. هل تقبلوني فرداً من رجالكم

    حتى نعيش على هذا الفلاح معا

  85. قد اختصصتم بشأن كله شرف

    هل تسمحون بأن يبقى لنا شرعا

  86. ما زلت ادعوا إلى أمثال نهضتكم

    فكنتم يا رجال الفضل مستمعا

  87. فثبت اللّه مسعاكم وزادكم

    تقدماً في العلا ما كوكب طلعا
