1. Calamities have indeed struck me, O Merciful One—

dense, enveloping afflictions spreading their shrouds over me.

  2. The evil of my sins has driven me down the paths of ruin,

tearing my being apart and driving righteousness far from me.

  3. I have raised my complaint to none who might dispel my anguish

and pity my supplication—none but You, my God.

  4. You are the true Merciful One; Your compassion encompasses

the obedient friend and the defiant foe alike.

  5. Though I have transgressed against my own soul as a sinner,

I have never relinquished the beauty of my hope.

  6. My hope has only grown, for I believe in You,

and I have never despaired, though I have been disobedient.

  7. Blessed are You: relieve every anguish, sorrow,

and care, and ease every straitness that has beset me.

  8. Exalted are You; revive me with Your spirit, and shield me

by Your mercy from affliction, and deal gently with my condition.

  9. By Your truth, I have not despaired of the mercy with which

You provide for the raven in its nest, hollow with hunger.

  10. “Do not despair of God’s mercy” has guided me,

and “Do not despair of His relief,” so long as it summons me.

  11. My expectations have come to rest in the boundless mercy

that precedes wrath; so receive my end, O Merciful One.
