1. تكب على دنياك وهي تبيد

    وتفتقد النائي وأنت فقيد

    You build upon this vanishing world

    And miss the distant one while bereft

  2. حريصاً عليها جامعاً لحطامها

    وغاية ما نافست فيه نفود

    Keen to possess it, collecting its remnants

    Yet your utmost competition was in vain

  3. تساور ملحاحاً على نيل فائت

    نعم كل ما يرجو الحصاد حصيد

    You journey thirstily along the departed Nile

    Yes, all that hope for harvest are harvested

  4. تكالب فيها أهلها وتذودهم

    وعمرك لو كنت اعتبرت تذود

    Its people scuffle over it while it repels them

    Were your life to contemplate, it would repel

  5. ولو أملا أدركته لم تجد له

    بقاء ولم تصحبك منه عهود

    Had you known a hope, you would not find

    Continuity nor covenants accompanying it

  6. ولو وافقت أمنية في حصولها

    أتتك وفيها للزوال قيود

    Had a wish aligned in its fulfillment

    It came bound in shackles of evanescence

  7. وتبني بناء طينه نقض دارس

    سيدرس يوماً والغرور جديد

    You build a structure of clay whose base crumbles

    One day it shall crumble; vanity renews

  8. ولو كان طيناً لم تخالطه رمة

    لميت ولكن رمة وصديد

    Had it been pure clay, dust would not have mixed

    But it mixed and so it died and decomposed

  9. تعز عن الدنيا وأيقن بأنها

    لئيمة طبع في الهبات تعود

    Be content with the world and convinced it is

    Wicked in nature, accustomed to withdrawal

  10. وإنك إن تسكن إليها تركتها

    وليس بها مما تركت حميد

    If you befriend it, when you leave it remains

    Without a trace of what you left commendable

  11. تمنيك بالآمال وهي شحيحة

    وتعطيك لين القول وهي حقود

    You wish for hopes while it is stingy

    And gives you soft speech yet remains grudging

  12. تخائل حسناً وهي شوهاء غادر

    وأنت بها مضنى الفؤاد عميد

    You are deceived by its beauty while it is ugly and betraying

    Yet you are enamored with it, staunch and loyal

  13. تحذلق بالتمويه مكراً وخدعة

    ولا شيء مما تدعيه سديد

    It lures you with pretense, deceit and cunning

    Yet nothing it claims is truthful or validated

  14. ولو نلت منها طائلاً كان آفة

    تداجي بها مغرورها وتكيد

    Had you gained a thing from it, it would have been a disaster

    Duping its arrogant victim, plotting and scheming

  15. تدانيك حتى تؤنس الصدق والصفا

    وما الشأن إلا صائد ومصيد

    It draws you near as if intimacy and sincerity

    Yet the matter is nothing but hunter and hunted

  16. ولو صدقت فالصدق في طي كذبها

    إذا عاهدت بالوعد فهو وعيد

    Even if it were truthful, truth in its lies

    When it covenants a promise, the promise is a threat

  17. تكشف في أطوارها عن خلالها

    وأنت لما خلف الستار شهيد

    It reveals in its phases its innate defects

    While you, behind the veil, are unsuspecting

  18. وذلك صدق لو تشاء حذرتها

    عليه ونصح لو عقلت مفيد

    This is truth—had you willed, you would beware

    Counsel, if pondered, is greatly beneficial

  19. تفطن لها في شعرها فهي شاعر

    لها في أساليب النصيح قصيد

    Discern in its poetry, for it is a poet

    With refined methods of advice it has odes

  20. ألست تراها ريثما واصلت جفت

    وإن أقبلت حيناً تلاه صدود

    Do you not see it? As soon as it attaches, it detaches

    If it inclines for a time, detachment follows

  21. وفي هذه الحالات تحذير مبصر

    وخصم إذا فكرت فيه ودود

    In these states is insightful caution

    A disputant, if contemplated, becomes affectionate

  22. إن مجال الخير والشر بينها

    مجال اعتبار للعقول مديد

    The sphere of good and evil in it

    Is a sphere of lessons for rational minds

  23. وإن الذي تأتي به من صروفها

    صوارف عن تصديقها وسدود

    What its changes bring

    Are preclusions from believing it and barriers

  24. ألا ترعوي والنوح في كل منزل

    ومن عشت فيهم فاقد وفقيد

    Do you not heed, while eulogy in every house

    Where you dwelled, the bereft and the departed

  25. ألا ترعوي والدوراقوت وأهلها

    لهم شققت فوق اللحود لحود

    Do you not heed the abodes and their households

    Whose structures crumbled into rubble upon rubble

  26. ألست ترى الغارات شنت رعالها

    عليهن أودى والد ووليد

    Do you not see the attacks its plunderers launched

    Annihilating homes, children and parents?

  27. تمر بك الأيتام والدمع جامد

    وآباؤهم تحت التراب جمود

    Orphans pass you, with tears frozen,

    Their fathers deep under the still soil

  28. خماص البطون استحوذ الغم والأسى

    عليهم فها هم أعظم وجلود

    Hunger constricts their bellies; grief and pain

    Have overtaken them, yet they are most forbearing

  29. إذا رجعوا نحو المنازل أظلمت

    وضاقت عليهم والقلوب وقود

    When they return to their homes, gloom pervades,

    Narrows around them, their hearts kindling

  30. نبا عنهم من كان يحنو عليهم

    إلى القرب منهم والمزار بعيد

    The one who cared for them is gone

    To the grave, while their visitations are distant

  31. سبيتم أطفال عليك أعزة

    ويفضي بزيد ما عليه يزيد

    Beloved children snatched from you

    As captives, while further captives amass

  32. وتصبح والأطفال والمال تربة

    وتدرك ما قدمت وهو عتيد

    You wake with children and wealth as dust

    And attain what you sent forth, predestined

  33. نرى غاية الدنيا وكيف صروفها

    ونحن على رأي الركون ركود

    We see the end of the world and how it changes

    While still clinging to complacency

  34. توبخها والذنب لا ريب ذنبنا

    وقد أعذرت والطارقات شهود

    Rebuke it—yet the sin, undoubtedly, is ours

    It is excused while the revelations witness

  35. ونستعقب الآجال والحكم فارغ

    فما ثم تنقيص لها ومزيد

    We await our terms, while Judgment is concluded,

    No deductions or additions to it can transpire

  36. خليلي دلاني على جزء خطوة

    خطونا ومن بعد المضي تعود

    My friend, show me a speck of the path we tread,

    We tread then revert after the course

  37. ذا بيدي نحو المنازل إذ خوت

    عساها بخبر الظاعنين تجود

    With my hands toward the houses, should they

    Inform of the complainers, perhaps they would give

  38. إذا لم نجد منها مجيباً فحالها

    يخبر أن الظاعنين همود

    If we find no answer, their state

    Informs that the complainers are submissive

  39. وإن وجوهاً كالبدور تغيرت

    فللدود طرف أحور وخدود

    Though faces like full moons have changed

    Soil has marred their ashen cheeks and beauty

  40. وإن كراماً أيقظوا المجد والعلا

    سكون باحشاء القبور رقود

    Though dignitaries awakened glory and sublime

    They slumber beneath the grave’s soil in repose

  41. وإن شئتما أن تقنعاني فقررا

    لنا وحشة مثل الممات ترود

    If you two wish to appease me, then elucidate

    A solitude to us similar to death’s swoop

  42. وإن تعذلاني في نحيب ألفته

    فاسكت عنه إنني لجليد

    If you reproach my weeping which I befriended

    Be silent, I am stoic, tears random strays

  43. دعاني أسح الدمع سحاً عسى به

    لواقد غم في الفؤاد خمود

    My tears let flow, perhaps it may sedate

    The anguish in my heart and cause it to sleep

  44. خليلي ما دمع يزيل كآبة

    ولكن قرظ القارظين شديد

    My friend, no tears diminish anxiety

    But the death of loved ones is most severe

  45. خليلي قرظ القارظين أصارني

    كما جذ من دوح وحطم عود

    My friend, the death of loved ones left me

    Like a branch, snapped off the sandalwood tree

  46. خليلي هدَّ الموت أركان دعوتي

    فمن لي عمود بعدهم وعميد

    My friend, death shook the pillars of my abode

    Without them, where are my pillar and foundation?

  47. أبى حدثان الدهر إلا انتقالهم

    وهذا انتقال يقتضيه خلود

    The turns of fate insisted on their transfer

    This transition dictated by eternity

  48. إلا أن مقدار الحياة مقدر

    عليها وإن طال البقاء حدود

    Except that the measure of life is measured

    However lengthy the stay appears, it is limited

  49. خليلي إن راعت رياض نضارة

    فللماء في تلك الرياض وجود

    My friend, if gardens blossomed beautifully

    Water is the life of those gardens

  50. فإن غيض عنها الماء غاضت حياتها

    وعادت هشيماً للتراب يعود

    If water dries from them, their life withers

    Reverting to dust returning to its origin

  51. فغن نبك أهل العلم نبك حياتنا

    عليهم كما بالماء ينضر عود

    Mourn the people of knowledge; mourn our lives for them

    As the branch revives by water, we revive by them

  52. حنتني عوادي الدهر غماً بفقدهم

    على شرعات فتلهن شديد

    The turns of fate pained me at their loss

    With unbearable agony, mountains cannot endure

  53. إلى أن تشظى العود وانجرد اللحا

    واصلب عود في الخطوب مؤود

    Until the branch withers and the gum dries

    And the staunchest wood in afflictions breaks

  54. خذا حدثاني عن شموس تساقطت

    ببطن الثرى ماذا هناك تريد

    Inform me of the suns that have set

    What do they intend within the darkness?

  55. نعم كونت تجري إلى مستقرها

    وكل الذي يجري مداه ركود

    Yes, they flowed to their place of rest

    All that flows, its extent is stillness

  56. إذا أرسلت شمس شعاعاً من الهدى

    دعاها فلبت للخمود صعيد

    When the sun emanates a ray of guidance

    Death calls it to stillness and the plain

  57. أكل مراد الموت إن نهارنا

    قصير وليل الراحلين مديد

    For death desires our day be brief

    And the night of the departed prolonged

  58. اكفكف دمعي والرزايا تذيعه

    فحزني قطين والدموع شريد

    Withhold my tears although calamities provoke them

    My sadness is overwhelming; tears stray

  59. إلا كل حي في يد الموت حاصل

    فماذا بكاء الفاقدين يفيد

    Except that every living being is in death's grasp

    So what use in the bereaved's crying?

  60. وما ندب الأعمار مثل حدودها

    لان نفاذاً يقتضيه وجود

    Nor does lamenting lifetimes resemble their limits

    Since termination is necessitated by existence

  61. لقد صدعت قلبي صوادع للردى

    لهن انحدار بالأسى وصعود

    You fractured the breast of my heart with fissures of devastation

    With sorrow they slope and ascend

  62. ولا كمصاب القطب يوم تفطرت

    قلوب بمعناه لنا وكبود

    Unlike the polar crack when it ruptured

    Hearts did not equate that meaning for us

  63. فذاك لعمري صادع لا تطيقه

    جبال ولا يقوى عليه حديد

    That crack, by my life, is unendurable

    By mountains, nor can iron withstand it

  64. لقد جاز نزر العمر والعمر بائد

    ولكن ما أبقاه ليس يبيد

    A meager lifetime has passed and lifetime is waning

    But what it left does not perish

  65. مضى وله كنزان خير مقدم

    وكنز علوم للعباد عتيد

    It passed, leaving two treasures of goodness

    And a treasure of knowledge useful for worshipers

  66. تخلص للعقبى واعقب نافعاً

    من العلم يبلي الدهر وهو جديد

    Be faithful to the Hereafter and leave a beneficial legacy

    Of knowledge; time decays but it renews

  67. هنيئاً مليكا لعلم لاقيت صالحاً

    بما خلفه مما تركت يزيد

    Congratulations. You met a righteous end

    With what you left, increasing what you attained

  68. لقد شقي التغرير منك برفضه

    وبادرت للباقي وأنت سعيد

    Refusing the extravagances of life fearing its blame

    While you lived praiseworthy, flawless

  69. رفضت فضول العيش خشية ذمه

    وأنت غني ما حييت حميد

    The pleasures of life while death is its end

    Are pleasures though deemed negligible by the fool

  70. وإن نعيم الدهر والموت حده

    نعيم ولو عند الغبي زهيد

    Worldly temptations never swayed you

    While it ensnares others decisively

  71. ولم تجنح الدنيا إليك لمطمع

    ومطمعها فيمن عداك أكيد

    You desired it for farming; thus the crops have thrived,

    Blessed by the Merciful, so they are harvested

  72. ولا قدرت تصطاد عندك لحظة

    وقد طفقت للغافلين تصيد

    O pillar of the faith, salvation of its realm

    I sacrifice myself for you; who equals your stature?

  73. نعم شئتها للحرث فالزرع قد زكى

    وباركه الرحمن فهو حصيد

    You drew near your Master eternally

    I pray you remain near, do not distance

  74. فيا قطب هذا الدين ياغوث ملكه

    فديتك ما عن ذا الحمام محيد

    You journeyed; Islam without you is bereaved

    The days of fortune have darkened

  75. تقربت من مولاك قرباً مؤبداً

    وادعوك لا تبعد وأنت بعيد

    You journeyed—do not distance, can you return?

    By the most Exalted, from the Exalted!

  76. ترحلت فالاسلام مقلة ثاكل

    وأوجه أيام السعادة سود

    Why not leave righteous living in your absence?

    Alas, the sorrowful life is not pleasant

  77. ترحلت لا تبعد وهل لك أوبة

    وواحربا اوب اللحيد لحيد

    If you willed I deliberately continue in your absence

    I want life to combat life

  78. فهلا تركت العيش بعدك صالحاً

    وهيهات ما عيش الحزين رغيد

    I know the living has an end

    And breaths where once roses bloomed

  79. إذا شئت أن أحيا بعيدك عامداً

    أردت حياة للحياة تذود

    But the demise of scholars while their knowledge remains

    This is evidence of the Resurrection

  80. وإني لأدري إن للحي غاية

    وإن صدوراً حيث كان ورود

    An entrusted ignorance of our Lord's signs remains

    Awaiting it is promise and warning for it

  81. ولكن رفع العلم في موت أهله

    وهذا لأشراط القيام شهيد

    This is a narrow path impossible to tread

    A towering mass, no feet can climb it

  82. انقضي على جهل أمانة ربنا

    ويرقبها وعد له ووعيد

    So arise, Master of Mysticism, while ignorance thrives

    I remain shackled in these shackles

  83. وهذا مضيق يستحيل سلوكه

    وطود تزل الرجل عنه كؤود

    The night extends its darkness

    While between us no guide to it we possess

  84. فقم سيد العرفان والجهل عامر

    وقد لويت فوق القيود قيود

    Though you left rays within us

    The sun was eclipsed but its illumination remains

  85. أتتركنا والليل مرخ سدوله

    وما بيننا هاد إليه نهود

    We see the orbiting planets submitting to it

    Bowing and prostrating around it

  86. وإن كنت قد خلفت فينا أشعة

    عرا الشمس من اشراقهن خمود

    But it did not impact the sea with a drop

    While you are an ocean and the seas, arrivals

  87. نرى السبعة السيارة امتثلت لها

    فهن ركوع حولها وسجود

    O Father of Joseph, look upon our affliction

    The mystics' affliction is most severe

  88. ولكن ما أثرت في البحر نقطة

    وأنت محيط والبحار وفود

    Why does the East and West clamor tumultuously

    Startled, reverent, and praising?

  89. أبا يوسف انظر نظرة في مصابنا

    فإن مصاب العارفين شديد

    Why is the universe anxious and dejected

    Like an outcast among the mighty?

  90. من الحسر أن تبقى على الجهل أمة

    وليس عليها مرشد ورشيد

    Is it not because the Father of Terrors attacked

    And the Pole of the Mystics is lost?

  91. ورثت رسول اللّه علماً ودعوة

    تسوق على منهاجه وتقود

    Is it not because the Gathering and Dispersion are near

    And none remains but the Driver and Witness?

  92. ولم تأل جهداً في نصيحة دينه

    تقارع عنه خصمه وتسود

    Are our days not depleted of Muhammad

    And his companions while the Day of Resurrection is distant?

  93. كسرت على التأويل سلطان بطله

    وأنت على الحق المبين مجيد

    The shocks of death warn of attacks

    While we slumber in the cradle of vanity

  94. تثعلبت الأقوال حول حياضه

    فقمت وأنت الليث عنه تذود

    After our righteous die, what do we hope for?

    Transgressions and corruption proliferate

  95. بسيف من البرهان منصله الهدى

    وليس له إلا القران حدود

    Do I hope to be spared death after them?

    Or that the Gathering is nullified and life, eternal?

  96. فقطع أعناق الخلاف وأصبحت

    ملوك حجاج البطل وهي عبيد

    Hardship has certainly become immense, so let us awaken

    Terrible fate and blissful fate arrive

  97. ودوخت بالبرهان عارضة العدى

    فولت لها بالخزي عنك فديد

    The portents of the Hadith are realized, our religion is

    Like its inaugural day, unique

  98. قفي يا زقاة البطل لا تتفرقي

    فليس سواء ثابت وطريد

    Most portents of the Hour have transpired

    Little remaining is imminent

  99. فدى لامام الدين نفسي وقد طغت

    عليَّ من الحزن المقيم جنود

    Awaken for this matter, decisively

    The remainder of the path is provision

  100. وإني وإن أطريته لمقصر

    وحسبي هم في الفؤاد وقيد

    It is nothing but the intoxication of sudden death

    A matter you used to shun

  101. وحسبي وفاء من حقوق رثائه

    ضمائر مفجوع إليه تعود

    We were commanded to obey God's instructions

    If lifetime ends, it shall resume

  102. وأين مقامي بين أبحر نعته

    ولكن دموع سبق ونشيد

    These terms at every instant

    Witness the warner's claim

  103. عهودي بصبري يقضم الصخر نابه

    فقد نسخت تلك العهود عهود

    The righteous pass away two by two, one by one

    Only the wicked remain

  104. وما كنت أدري أن بعد ابن يوسف

    سيلبث رشد أو يعيش جليد

    We had eyes during our past days like a night

    But the morn’s eyes are iron

  105. وكنت أخال الأرض بعد هويه

    تزلزل أغوار لها ونجود

    Do we await terms while we are unoccupied?

    Or is death, before life, distant?

  106. وكنت أرى الأفلاك بعد فراقه

    ستهوي ويعرو السابحات ركود

    Most wondrous of things is to forbid wrong

    And war against death, equipped and ready

  107. أما وشموس للمعارف أسفرت

    بأسفاره إني به لكميد

    More wondrous than it is to indulge between a calamity

    That befalls, then another that is unavoidable

  108. وللصبر سلطان على كل نكبة

    وصبري فيه لا يقوم مؤود

    We name what tempts as charming and delightful

    Yet the matter is nothing but a dune and plain

  109. ولو كان هذا البحر دمعاً أفيضه

    نسبت إليه الشح وهو يجود

    How your war, O death, left us

    To taste the poison while it's toxic

  110. أرى المزن فيه قلدتني فأسبلت

    دموعاً وشقت جيبهن رعود

    When did hopes attain their pursuits?

    Is there permanence? Is there existence?

  111. معاشر أهل الاستقامة هل لكم

    عزاء وهل عيش يعد سعيد

    Did we lose the mystics' remainder over us?

    Is pacifity a valid view?

  112. علام يضج الشرق والغرب ضجة

    به ذعر في دهشة وسمود

    After the Master of Saints, Muhammad

    Can any compatriot satisfy or suffice?

  113. وما بال هذا الكون ولهان مطرقاً

    كما ضيم بين الأقوياء حريد

    Do not the universes mourn him in their bereavement

    As we mourned the faith's decline by his loss?

  114. أليس أبو الأهوال قد شن غارة

    فباء وقطب العارفين فقيد

    Can a breast be solaced or tears shed

    And the mind resets and reinitiates?

  115. أليس لأن الحشر والنشر آزف

    ولم يبق إلا سائق وشهيد

    The consolation of Muslims is their calamity is immense

    And the sorrow in it severe

  116. أئن فرغت أيامنا من محمد

    وأصحابه يوم النشور بعيد

    A spring of mysticism, though its gardens have faded

    Its benefits remain long

  117. لقد آذنتنا صعقة الموت هجمة

    ونحن على مهد الغرور رقود

    It vanished; its orchards shuddered and trembled

    With its presence, is there harvest or shade?

  118. وماذا نرجي بعد موت خيارنا

    قعاصاً وأنواع الفساد تزيد

    Add my anguished cry to the heavens'

    When longing returns, grief replenishes

  119. أنرجو بأن نعفى من الموت بعدهم

    أو الحشر يلغى والحياة خلود

    The world's weeping does not aid permanence

    Nor above the limits can it increase

  120. لقد جد جد الخطب فلننتبه له

    ووافى شقي حده وسعيد

    For a master—had he lived, our lives would have lived

    When he died, souls and ancestors died

  121. وقد صح مصداق الحديث فديننا

    غريب كيوم الابتداء وحيد

    He quenched his soul with his Lord's drink

    Meeting him between the chosen, eternally abiding

  122. وأكثر اشراط القيامة وارد

    وأوشك للباقي القليل ورود

    Except that in Rabee-ul-Akhir grief flourishes

    So this chronicles the date of his death

  123. تيقظ لهذا الشأن يقظة حازم

    وآخر في ثني الطريق رصيد

  124. وما هو إلا سكرة الموت بغتة

    وذلك أمر كنت منه تحيد

  125. أما في وصايا اللّه أنا سننتهي

    وإن حياة تنتهي ستعود

  126. أما هذه الآجال في كل لحظة

    بهن على دعوى النذير شهود

  127. أينتقر الأخيار مثنى وموحداً

    ويبقى لأشرار العباد محيد

  128. لنا أعين في المدبرات كليلة

    ولكن لحظ المقبلات حديد

  129. أتنتظر الأجال منا فراغنا

    أم الموت من قبل الحياة بعيد

  130. ومن أعجب الأشياء وادعة النهى

    وحرب المنايا عدة وعديد

  131. وأعجب منه لهوها بين مفجع

    تولى وآت ليس عنه محيد

  132. فهلا تواعدنا على نصح مبصر

    وأعلمنا أن الظنون همود

  133. وأن مصيراً حل فيه قديمنا

    يتابعهم للحل فيه جديد

  134. فيا صعقات الحزن كم تتعهدي

    قلوباً عليها للغموم غمود

  135. وبئست قلوباً تثبت الحرص والبقا

    وليس بها للموت قط جحود

  136. وبئست قلوباً إن الظت بحائل

    تنازع فيه وارث ولحود

  137. نلقب ما يغري تلاداً وطارفاً

    وما الشأن إلا جندل وصعيد

  138. وبئست قلوباً إن قست وامامها

    رفات وهم نسل لنا وجدود

  139. وبئست قلوباً إذ تروح وتغتدي

    بأمن ومحياها القصير مكيد

  140. أما في صروف الحادثات مواقف

    لفكر لملقي السمع وهو شهيد

  141. تهد المنايا هضبة بعد هضبة

    وفي سمعنا للباقيات هديد

  142. ونحن على ما نحن أهداف رميها

    ونمرح فيما نشتهي ونريد

  143. هبلتك يا حرب المنايا تركتنا

    نذوق مذاق الشهد وهو هبيد

  144. متى فازت الآمال فيما ترومه

    بباق وهل هذا الوجود وجود

  145. وهل فقدنا للعارفين بقية

    علينا وهل رأي الركون سديد

  146. أبعد مليك الأولياء محمد

    يروق نضير أو يلذ رغيد

  147. ألا تلبس الأكوان فيه حدادها

    كما نكست للدين فيه بنود

  148. أيثلج صدر أو تغيض مدامع

    ويبدىء عقل بعده ويعيد

  149. عزاء بني الاسلام أن مصابكم

    عظيم وأن الحزن فيه شديد

  150. ربيع من العرفان أما جنانه

    فغلب وأما نفعه فمديد

  151. ذوى واكفهرت واقشعرت رياضه

    فهل للجنى والظل بعد شهود

  152. اضم إلى نشج السموات عبرتي

    إذا استرجعت غب النشيج تعود

  153. وليس بكاء العالمين مؤيداً

    بقاء ولا فوق الحدود يزيد

  154. على سيد لو عاش عاشت حياتنا

    وإذ مات ماتت أنفس وجدود

  155. سقى ذاته من ربه صوب رحمة

    ولاقاه بين المصطفين خلود

  156. إلا في ربيع الآخر الحزن فاحسبوا

    فهذا لتأريخ الوفاة مفيد
