1. My God, show compassion, O Merciful One, upon my plight;

    Before Your gaze most high lie my station and my stance.

  2. My God, O You beyond whom hope cannot pass,

    Whom no imaginings of creation can transcend.

  3. My God, O You who never lets persistent entreaty go to waste,

    O final refuge of my fear, and furthest bound of my loneliness.

  4. The hands of sin passed me among themselves and led me on;

    The reins of transgression drew me through the trackless wastes of my error.

  5. Satan has indeed gained mastery over me, my Lord,

    As I set myself against You through my own wretched choice.

  6. Through negligence I fell utterly short of the Command,

    And recklessly violated the prohibitions of the sacred law—

  7. Like one who denies all beneficence and feels safe from sudden seizure,

    Who disregards the warning and knows nothing of divine power.

  8. When I opened my eyelids to the vision of guidance, I saw

    The horror of my disobedience and the enormity of my crime.

  9. So I came with all my hopes, ashamed, unto

    Your sanctuary, beneath mercy everlasting.

  10. My hope is fixed on none but God alone,

    And only through Him have my dread and terror subsided.

  11. I confide to You my secret: a heart overcome

    By humility—so, O Merciful One, set my fear at peace.
