إن المعارف للقلوب مصائدُ

وسنا العقول بغير وهب خامد

Knowledge is a trap for hearts,

And brightness of minds without innate gift is extinct,

والجَد قبل الكسب في إدراكها

والكسب في التحقيق وهب وارد

And effort before attainment in comprehending it,

And attainment in verification is innate gift and instilled endowment.

وإذا تحجبت الحقائق عن حجى

فكثائف الأهواء فيهِ رواكد

When truths are veiled from pilgrims,

Then illusions in it are latent obstacles.

وقداسةُ التجريد مجلبة الصفا

وصفا النفوس هو البصير الناقِد

And the sanctity of abstraction attracts purity,

And purity of souls is the perceptive critic.

وإذا تقدست القلوب من الهوى

فلهن أسرار الغيوب مشاهد

When hearts are sanctified from passions,

Then they witness the secrets of the unseen.

وسنا البصائر مدرك إن مَدّه

من بحر نور الله نور واقد

And the sights attained if extended,

From the sea of God's light, light and burning.

ومتى تواردت الأشعّة وانجلت

فاقصد فعندك في طريقك قائِدُ

And when the rays gathered and shone,

Then aim for with you on your path is a guide.

وعلى كمالك فاعترف بالنقص لا

يغررك وهمك والخيال الفاسد

And regarding your perfection admit shortcoming,

Lest your illusion and corrupt imagination deceive you.

فعلى المراصد من صفاتك قاطع

وهواك من دون الموارد ذائد

And regarding your praiseworthy qualities content,

While your passion beyond the springs is deterrent.

وعلى المدارج في المعارج دافعٌ

إن لم يكن لك في الرقيّ مساعِدُ

And on the steps in the spiritual ascent impeller,

If you have no assistant in the spiritual ascent.

هلا أتتك عن السعادة خبرة

وأتاك من فيض المعارف شاهد

Why has the wisdom of felicity not come to you?

And why has witness of the overflowing knowledge not come to you?

بكمال طبع صحائف نبويّةٍ

شرعية لهدى النفوس موارد

With the perfection of composition are prophetic leaves,

Lawful for the guidance of souls and springs.

تحلي حواشيها خرائد خلب

لله من خلف الحجاب خرائد

Their margins are adorned with scintillating gems,

For God, behind the veil, scintillating gems.

توحي إلى الروع الهدى من نورها

وهدى النبي هو الضياء الواقد

They inspire spiritual wisdom from their light,

And the Prophet's guidance is the illuminating torch.

فيها لمقتبس العلوم مصابح

ومعالم ومواقف ومقاصد

In them for the gleaner of knowledge are lamps,

Signs, spiritual stations and purposes.

ومعارف ولطائف فيضية

ومظاهر قدسيّة ومشاهد

And spiritual knowledge and subtle outpourings,

And holy manifestations and visions.

تحيا القلوب بها وتهوى رشدها

ولكل ما تهوى القلوب شواهد

Hearts come alive through them and their guidance is cherished,

And for all that hearts cherish are proofs.

زهراء تنثرُ جوهراً كلماتها

ومن العلوم نفائس وفرائد

Blossoms scattering the gems of their words,

And of knowledge choice rarities and unprecedented innovations.

حار ابن إبراهيم في ترتيبهِ

شرفاً له زهر النجوم سواجد

Ibn Ibrahim was perplexed in arranging it -

Honor to him, the flowers of stars bow down.

متن تودّ الشمس لو عقدت لهُ

تاجاً وأن له النجوم قلائد

The radiant sun wishes it would make for it,

A crown, and for it the stars garlands.

حَسَن تضيء به محاسنُ يوسفٍ

ولحسن يوسف كل حسن ساجد

Beauty shines through it the beauties of Joseph,

And for Joseph's beauty all beauty bows down.

طوبى لفرقتنا المحقة إنه

نعم الامام امامنا والقائد

Blessings upon our rightly-guided group,

What an excellent imam, our imam and guide!

قطع الخصوم هدى وفض ثغورهم

وكذا المحق عن الحقائق زائد

He severed the disputants, guiding them,

And thus the truth-ful from the truths excels.

والحق يعلو والموفق غالب

والبطل يرهق والملفق فاسد

And the truth prevails, and the divinely guided prevails,

While the futile tires, and the trickster corrupts.

أو ما ترى فصل الخطاب بحكمة

للحق فيه مصادرٌ ومَوارد

Or do you not see the conclusive dialogue with wisdom?

For truth in it sources and springs.

أو ما ترى ربعاً منيراً دوحه

فيه لفرسان العلوم مَطارد

Or do you not see the illuminated precincts,

Wherein for the riders of knowledge are pursuits.

نبت الفلاح على زبى صفحاتهِ

يسقيه والقران ماء واحد

The harvest of success grew on the pages of its discourse,

Watering it, and the Quran one water.

رتعت أوابد كل عَارفة بسا

حته فهن لمن أراد مَصائد

The devoted worshippers of every gnostic drank their fill,

For they are traps for whoever so desires.

أمحمد مهدت شرع محمدٍ

نعم المهاد لنا ونعم الماهد

In the period of Muhammad the law of Muhammad prospered -

What an excellent cradle for us and how smoothly did he guide!

وبسطت حاشية ملأت وصابها

دراً وذاك الدر كنز خالد

And its annotation spread, filling it,

With gems, and those gems an everlasting treasure.

ولقد توفرت السعادة وانجلى ال

اقبال وانكمش العدو الحاسد

And felicity prevailed, and luck shone,

And the envious enemy recoiled.

وتألقت غرر البشائر حينما انت

ظمت لجوهرها الثمين قلائد

And the stars of good tidings gleamed when

They were strung together for its precious essence, garlands.

بكمالها طبعاً وكون كمالها

فيه لغايات الكمال معاقد

Perfect in its composition and its perfection in it,

For the purposes of perfection, knotted.

وأتاك تأريخي ادرس الترتيب أو

قمراً بدا للشرع فيه مقاصد

And my chronogram has come to you - study the arrangement

Or a moon appeared in it purposes of law.

أو شئت برٌّ ظاهرٌ تاريخه

أو قول حاشية الحديث فرائدّ

Or if you wish an evident act of righteousness, its chronogram,

Or say, the annotation of hadiths unprecedented innovations.
