1. The precedence of the Will is the seeker’s ladder.

So turn back—perhaps you will outstrip the pioneers.

  2. The tongues of Truth have called you; turn, then,

toward the call and toward that assembly.

  3. Set forth with your travel-worn mount at the summons; perhaps

the weary mount may race ahead while the hardy mount’s back grows faint.

  4. It has chosen you for its cause through signs

whose stars the manifest Beauty has revealed.

  5. Do you suppose the Beloved calls you near to Him,

then, when you draw near, casts you far away?

  6. Had you wandered bewildered by Beauty’s light in some vision,

you would have seen the secret of divine gentleness among the witnesses.

  7. Beauty’s light shines upon all manifestations;

    behold it, inscribed upon creation.

  8. Without it, the light of His majesty would consume you,

and you would fail to grasp the wisdom of the realm of opposites.

  9. He cast you into the abode of passingness for a wisdom

whose realities are hidden from singular souls.

  10. And He called you: “Come to Me, and do not fear,

among those journeying by night toward Me, who are of My hosts.

  11. You are the trustee of Our Trust, which

weighed heavily upon the celestial spheres and mountains.

  12. Do you think you can discharge it without My aid,

or that you could bear it without My will?

  13. I clothed you in the Seven Oft-Repeated as a robe,

within a form belonging to the world of bodies.

  14. So cast off your dense corporeal nature, which is unfit

to witness Our Presence among the witnesses.

  15. And with the water of holiness wash ten subtle faculties

that are your very self, clean of sullied natural disposition.

  16. You were given five seas to drink, that you might live

in a peerless thirst, foremost among those who come to drink.

  17. I made them gush forth for you from the attributes of the Essence,

at the fountain of manifestation and the origin of individual beings.
