1. أشعة الحق لا تخفى عن النظر

    وإنما خفيت عن فاقد البصر

    The rays of truth are not hidden from sight

    Though obscured from the one deprived of vision

  2. وكلمة اللّه لم تنزل محجبة

    عن البصائر بين الوهم والفكر

    And the word of God was not sent down veiled

    From insights amid fancy and thought

  3. نادى المنادي بها بيضاء نيرة

    حنيفة سمحة لم تعي بالفطر

    The caller called it white, pure

    Upright, benign - innocent in nature

  4. أقامها اللّه ديناً غير ذي عوج

    جاء البشير بها للجن والبشر

    God established it as an upright religion

    The bearer of good news brought it to jinn and man alike

  5. والجاهلية في غلواء عارضة

    من جهلها ومن الأشراك في غمر

    While paganism persists obstinately

    In its ignorance and polytheism immersed

  6. فقام مضطلعاً ثقل الرسالة مج

    دود العزائم فرداً خيرة الخير

    So he undertook the weight of the message resolutely

    The most steadfast of the steadfast

  7. والوحي يأتي نجوماً معجزاً قيماً

    والشرك يكبت والإِسلام في ظفر

    And revelation came to him in miraculous, invaluable stars

    While polytheism was subdued and Islam triumphed

  8. وكلمة اللّه تعلو فوق جاحدها

    وآية الحجر تمحو آية الحجر

    And the word of God rises above those who deny it

    Just as the sign of the rock erased the sign on the rock

  9. حتى تجلى منار الدين منبلجاً

    بصادع الذكر والصمصامة الذكر

    Until the minaret of religion shone radiantly

    With the melodious chant and the ringing chant

  10. وآمنت برسول اللّه طائفة

    أعطاهم السبق فيه سابق القدر

    And a group believed in the Messenger of God

    Those whom divine decree gave precedence therein

  11. زكى قلوبهم النور المبين كما

    يزكو النبات بما يلقى من المطر

    The clear light purified their hearts

    As vegetation is purified by the rain that falls on it

  12. لاقى صدورهم الايمان فانشرحت

    له وقاموا به في عزم منتصر

    Their breasts embraced faith so they expanded

    With resolve and they stood by it victoriously

  13. تأزروا شعب الايمان وانتبهوا

    بين الجهادين منهم أنفس العمر

    They girded themselves with the legions of faith and stirred

    Spending between the two jihads their very souls

  14. أحاطهم وأمين اللّه فانتشئوا

    بين الامينين والقرآن في وزر

    The Trustworthy of God took them under His protection so they thrived

    Between the two trustees, with the Qur’an their burden

  15. غذاهم الوحى في مهد الرسالة من

    طور إلى آخر كالماء في الشجر

    Revelation nourished them in the cradle of the message from

    One stage to the next, like water in trees

  16. نور بواطنهم نور ظواهرهم

    نور خلائقهم في الفعل والخبر

    The light of their essences, the light of their forms

    The light of their natures in deed and speech

  17. تضائق الملأ الأعلى مكانتهم

    في فطرة اللّه لا في فطرة البشر

    The Highest Assembly was too narrow for their status

    Not in the nature of man but in the nature of God

  18. كم جاء جبريل في أحزابه مددا

    من السماء على المعتاقة الضمر

    How often Gabriel brought them aid in troops

    From the heavens to the devoted of soul

  19. خير القرون قرين المصطفى وكذا

    حكم القرينين لا ينفك من أثر

    The best of generations, the companions of the Chosen One and likewise

    The rule of the two caliphs is inseparable from influence

  20. فمات عنهم رسول اللّه عدتهم

    كالأنبياء عدول الحكم والسير

    When God’s Messenger passed away, their number

    Was as the prophets, the just in rule and conduct

  21. وكلهم أولياء غير مقترف

    كبيرة لم يتب منها فمنه بري

    All of them saints who committed no major sin

    Without repenting thereof, so they are innocent

  22. ومن مصوب ذي بطل لدى فتن

    لا واقف جاهلاً من بالصواب حري

    And the devoted in faith, my attention is drawn

    To the praise of them in the decisive chapters

  23. وعالم الحق في حزن توقف عن

    عالم فذاك وقوف غير مغتفر

    And in dissociating from one who betrayed loyalty

    The generality of praise in scripture is invalidated

  24. تشهيا أو رجوعاً عن بصيرته

    فالحكم يبرأ من هذا بلا حذر

    Love and hate are two obligations necessitated

    By partisans for and against righteousness

  25. وهم وإن شرفوا من أجل صحبته

    فحكم تلكيفهم كالحكم في البشر

    And the command is built on deeds and how they occurred

    While praise and blame are purely inconsequential

  26. ومدحه لهم فرع استقامتهم

    في طاعة اللّه لا مدحاً على الغير

    The most honoured of creation are the most God-fearing

    So lineage avails nothing without God-consciousness

  27. وللموفين في الايمان متجه

    ما جاء من مدحهم في محكم السور

    What favouritism - no slippery path brings me closer

    To one without piety, nor do I court danger

  28. وفي البراءة من أبقى ولاية ذي

    بطل المحض عموم المدح في الزبر

    Neither lineage, nor family, nor companions distinguish them

    In religion from others - such is the decree manifest

  29. والحب والبغض فرضان استحقهما

    خصمان في اللّه من بر ومن فجر

    He summoned the clan openly at the top of Mount Safa

    And the Messenger of God warned them with forewarning

  30. والأمر يبنى على الأعمال كيف جرت

    والمدح والذم بحتاً غير معتبر

    Consider then the wisdom of specificity - how it came

    To the nearest of kin from nomad and settled alike

  31. وأكرم الخلق أتقاهم فليس إذا

    للمدح والذم بالأهواء من أثر

    That they may know that duty is not due to lineage

    Which avails naught, without God none bears responsibility

  32. فيم المحاباة ما قربي بمزلقة

    من دون تقوى ولا بعدي على خطر

    Had duty been negated by nobility

    God's justice would be suspended in human nature

  33. لا نسل لا أهل لا أصحاب يفرقهم

    ديناً عن الخلق حكم ما من الصور

    And God's argument with obligation is inescapable

    No difference in the command - lowly and elite

  34. نادى العشيرة في رأس الصفا علناً

    وصاح فيهم رسول اللّه بالنذر

    To messengers and the Highest Assembly, though supreme

    In righteousness, are mandated without excuse

  35. فانظر إلى حكمة التخصيص كيف أتت

    للأقربين من أهل البدو والحضر

    All are girded in the age of obligation

    Why should one not infallible be excluded?

  36. ليعلموا أنه التكليف لا نسب

    يغني ولا فيه دون اللّه من وزر

    We do not diminish people's rights unjustly

    Nor do we care about critics' disapproval

  37. لو كان بالشرف التكليف مرتفعاً

    إذا تعطل عدل اللّه في الفطر

    God has brought us the Qur'an as clear proof

    And the Sunna of truth, consensus and tradition

  38. وحجة اللّه بالتكليف لازمة

    سيان في الأمر مفضول وذو الخطر

    Thus we found no disobedience in God's decree

    Due purely to closeness counted as righteousness

  39. للرسل والملأ الأعلى وأشرفهم

    بالاستقامة تكليف بلا عذر

    Nor true piety in obedience to God's command

    Out of love - an unjust ruling - not sound

  40. الكل في قرن التكليف مؤتسر

    ما بال من ليس معصوماً من الغير

    The perfection of my Lord's oneness is love of His obedient

    And hatred of His enemies openly and in secret

  41. لا نبخس الناس بالأهواء حقهم

    ولا نبالي بقدح الخاتر الأشر

    O you who blamed the righteous for their adherence

    You have maligned - woe to you - the religion in blindness

  42. قد جاءنا اللّه بالقرآن بينة

    وسنة الحق والاجماع والأثر

    They are God's proofs - the people of righteousness

    Their resolves never swerved from the Chapter of the Groups

  43. فما وجدنا بحكم اللّه عاصية

    لمحض قرباه معدوداً من البرر

    When did you find fault in Abul-Sibtain’s conduct

    While you know best the people of clay and ruins

  44. ولا تقيا لأمر اللّه متبعاً

    بالحب حكماً لاجل البعد غير حري

    You judged him after joining him flesh to flesh

    With seventy thousand felled like an ancient structure

  45. كمال توحيد ربي حب طائعه

    وبغض أعدائه في السر والجهر

    You judged him after Umar and his spirit's comfort

    To the Gardens - and after the eminent Purity

  46. يا من أعاب على الأبرار نحلتهم

    أعبت ويلك دين اللّه عن بصر

    You judged him after God's judgement of him, in what

    Assuages rancour, and you were certain of gaining

  47. هم حجة اللّه أهل الاستقامة ما

    خامت عزائمهم عن آية الزمر

    You executed God's edict at the outset

    Why then mimic arbitration in the end?

  48. متى جهلت أبا السبطين خطته

    وأنت أعلم أهل الطين والوبر

    Your war on the transgressors opened its wounds

    By your Lord's judgement - you strayed not nor erred

  49. حاكمته بعد ما ألحمته قرما

    بعقر سبعين ألفاً عقرة الجزر

    You accepted the disrobed of Umar, rent asunder

    By the forearms of religion - the winds tore it to pieces

  50. حاكمته بعد عمار وروحته

    إلى الجنان وبعد السادة الطهر

    You did not heed religion's advisers knowingly

    Would that you had never heeded the accursed Ash'ath

  51. حاكمته بعد حكم اللّه فيه بما

    يشفي الغليل وقد أيقنت بالظفر

    So turn its supporters toward Iraq, for the gates

    Of Syria are barred to you by the full moon

  52. أقمت في البغي حد اللّه أولها

    ففيم تستن بالتحكيم في الأخر

    The patrons of religion have rejected your probity

    And the command of the covetous bodes ill

  53. أصبت في حربك الباغين ثغرتها

    بحكم ربك لم تضلل ولم تجر

    What rule when the appointer of it has been disgraced by God?

    God did not leave this judgement to mankind

  54. قبلت عوراء من عمر ويفت بها

    سواعد الدين فت العصف بالحجر

    I have no doubt about your intention

    Nor is my judgement analogical

  55. ولم تعر نصحاء الدين واعية

    وليت للأشعث الملعون لم تعر

    Since you were not content with judgement, your fighting

    And fighting one content with the Nile are not the same

  56. فاصرف أعنتها صوب العراق فقد

    سدت عليك ثغور الشام بالبدر

    You wronged Abul-Sibtain heedlessly

    Caution left you, and you were made captive by fear

  57. فطالبو الدين قد نابذت عصمتهم

    والأمر من طالبي الدنيا على ضرر

    As for fighting Ibn Sukhr after the caliphate

    Of God spilled into the abyss of his throat

  58. فيم الحكومة أخزى اللّه ناصبها

    لم يترك اللّه هذا الحكم للبشر

    You judged him by God's limits which dashing winds

    Blow away, crumbling to dust

  59. ولست في ريبة مما عنيت به

    ولا القضاء قياسي على صور

    With what command of yours are we content, O Abu al-Hasan?

    The arbitration of their warlords? Or their killers of the pious?

  60. فما قتالك بعد الحكم راضية

    وما قتالك من لم يرض بالنهر

    Or your resolve to follow their Ash'ath stubbornly

    Who licked your hide without attaining triumph?

  61. قد ارتكبت أبا السبطين في جلل

    وفاتك الحزم واستأسرت للحذر

    The pearl of the world suckled him but did not wean him

    While you were sated with her blood in immersion

  62. وما قتال ابن صخر بعدما انسكبت

    خلافة اللّه في بلعومه البحر

    He ceaselessly tore at the steeds of God, ill-omened

    Their withers lathered with gore

  63. حكمته في حدود اللّه ينسفها

    نسف العواصف مندوفاً من الوبر

    Did you not fight him as apostate? Then when

    His claws clung, he cast down the peace of one breathing his last

  64. بأي أمريك نرضى يا أبا الحسن

    تحكيم قاسطهم أم قتلة البرر

    He casts his treacheries at you cunningly

    Adding to the rancour of the Most High - may He kindle it!

  65. أم بانقيادك عزماً خلف أشعثها

    يفري أديمك لا يألوا بلا ظفر

    You followed the steps of his hypocrisy staggering

    As if a tail in the haunches of a mule

  66. أرضعته درة الدنيا فما مصحت

    وأنت من دمها ريان في غمر

    He turns his wily politics between his two ministers,

    Amr and Iblis, with roses and breasts

  67. ما زال ينقب خيل اللّه مشئمة

    فاعرقت صهوات الخيل بالدبر

    Your resolve was split, O prince, by his profane politics

    Splitting most evilly

  68. ألم تقاتله مرتداً فمذ علقت

    به البراثن ألقى سلم محتضر

    Once you ruled them in God's limits which demolish

    The ruling of the whites and the blacks together

  69. يلقى شراشره مكراً عليك وما

    ينضم من حنق الأعلى سعر

    Woe to it! It raised its guileful parchments

    Though their implications are to be discarded as dust

  70. أصبحت في أمة أوترت معظمها

    بهيمة اللّه بين الذيب والنمر

    Wait, O Abu al-Hasan! She who displayed herself

    False in religion - beware of her

  71. تسدد الرأي معصوماً فتنقضه

    بطانة السوء مركوساً إلى الحفر

    The rancours of Lat and Uzza inscribed them

    Beneath the cloak, the work of Uthman's evil

  72. تنافرت عنك أوشاب النفاق إلى

    دنيا بني عبد شمس نفرة الحمر

    Do not clothe Abul-Sibtain in disgrace

    That garment is folded over embers

  73. محكمين براء من معاوية

    ومن علي ويا ليت الأخير بري

    The Banu Shams have not moved past their heathenism

    The blood of the blues is on their filthy fangs

  74. والقاسطين أبي موسى وصاحبه

    عمرو اللعين فتى قطاعة البظر

    So what is the parchment of Siffin you drew up

    If not a parchment between cornerstone and rock?

  75. وقاسطي الشام والراضي حكومتهم

    من أهل صفين والراضي على الأثر

    You forgot Badr the unique, O Abu al-Hasan

    The pagan plot there of cunning and betrayal

  76. ليت الحكومة ما قامت قيامتها

    وليتها من أبي السبطين لم تصر

    And the day the factions came at you with their elite

    So you scattered the elite of the people in panic and flight

  77. ملعونة جعلتها الشام جنتها

    من ذي الفقار وقد أشفت على الخطر

    And the conquest of Mecca with the ravines gloomy

    While you are the radiant moon of Islam

  78. عجت بتحكيم عمرو بعدما حكمت

    همدان فيما بحكم البيض والسمر

    The people only converted under duress

    With the Lat still between hearing and sight

  79. تباً لها رفعت كيداً مصاحفها

    ومقتضاهن منبوذ على العفر

    When will you see Hashim sincere beneath the cloak?

    And the slit of the wound between breast and stomach?

  80. مهلاً أبا حسن إن التي عرضت

    زوراء في الدين كن منها على حذر

    Ibn Hind has no interest in avenging the household

    Though he pretended - would that the household were in Hellfire!

  81. ضغائن اللات والعزى رقلن بها

    تحت الطليق وعثمانية الأشر

    He held back from it while it cried for help

    Until it was gone, so he did what he desired

  82. لا تلبسن أبا السبطين مخزية

    فذلك الثوب مطوي على غرر

    The wretch waited for Uthman's murder

    Then began braying amid the reds and cattle

  83. لم تنتقل عبد شمس من نكارتها

    دم الكبود على أنيابها القذر

    Wailing in Syria, bereft, displaying for them

    The shirt of Uthman - the weeping of leaves by sorcery

  84. فما صحيفة صفين التي رقمت

    إلا صحيفة بين الركن والحجر

    Until he folded its beginning with its end

    Under a pretext no larger than a fingernail

  85. نسيت بدراً واحداً يا أبا حسن

    وندوة الكفر ذات المكر والغدر

    He came to you pounding the war drum

    Ardently in unbelief, in ignorance and uncouth zeal

  86. ويوم جاءك بالأحزاب صخرهم

    فاندك بالريح صخر القوم والذعر

    Hypocritically, following in his steps

    As if a tail in the haunches of a mule

  87. وفتح مكة والأعياص كاسفة

    وأنت حيدرة الاسلام كالقمر

    Turning his wily politics between his two ministers,

    Amr and Iblis, with roses and breasts

  88. والقوم ما أسلموا إلا مؤلفة

    والرأي في اللات بين السمع والبصر

    By the glorious - your resolve and success - so his profane politics split

    Most evilly

  89. متى ترى هاشم صدق الطليق بها

    وثغرة الجرح بين النحر والفقر

    Verily you were among ministers who rebelled against him

    Solace enough you are not among them today

  90. ما لابن هند بثار الدار من عرض

    له مرام وليت الدار في سقر

    What was the sin of the advisers of religion that

    Your winds uprooted them, leaving none surviving?

  91. لقد تقاعد عنها وهي محرجة

    حتى قضت فقضى ما شاء من وطر

    A remainder of God - their bones were scattered

    By the naked sword - cheaper than magic

  92. تربص الوغد من عثمان قتلته

    فقام ينهق بين الحمر والبقر

    You slew them while praying, without treachery

    As if a sudden onslaught - while they were on guard

  93. ينوح في الشام ثكلى ناشراً لهم

    قميص عثمان نوح الورق بالسحر

    How you magnified them the day of Ahl al-Bayt, elevating them

    While today you cast them like chaff and cattle

  94. حتى إذا لف أولاها بآخرها

    بشبهة ما تغطى نقرة الظفر

    The tax-collectors were contemptible to you

    Though you had long belittled them at daybreak

  95. أتاك يقرع ظنبوب الشقاق له

    روقان في الكفر من جهل ومن بطر

    You did not kill the group for poor religion

    Rather the matter was predestined

  96. تعك عك نفاقاً خلف خطوته

    كأنها ذنب في عجمه الوضر

    You killed them on accounts you used to establish

    Excuse for killing - no real excuse

  97. يدير بين وزيريه سياسته

    عمرو وابليس في ورد وفي صدر

    What of Dhu al-Thadiyya but a deceitful tale invented

    For war, falsely suggesting the validity of reports?

  98. وعزك الجد والتوفيق فانصدعت

    سياسة الدين صدعاً سيء الأثر

    As for the hadith of Marwaq's people, it is not considered

    Sound by one who judges equitably

  99. قد كنت في وزر ممن فتكت بهم

    أحسن عزاءك لست اليوم في وزر

    You exonerated yourself by an arbitration you were tricked into

    While you were most qualified to rule them

  100. ما ذنب عيبة نصح الدين إذ عصفت

    بهم رياحك لا تبقي ولم تذر

    They ruled by God and chose you - yet their view

    Was a kind of nonsense

  101. بقية اللّه قد هاضت عظامهم

    عرارة الحرب أواهون في السحر

    You said they had gone astray though they stepped

    Truthfully in the truth without crookedness or deviation

  102. اقعصتهم في صلاة لا بواء لهم

    هلا مشابرة والقوم في حذر

    Pace after pace, following the Sunna

    Of the Chosen One, Abu Bakr and Umar

  103. قد حكموا اللّه لم يفلل عزيمهم

    عن نصرة اللّه قرع الصارم الذكر

    The people changed not in the Dar nor Jamal

    They were true to their oath, not altering it

  104. رميت سهمك عن كبداء في كبد

    حرى من الذكر والتسبيح والسور

    You healed your soul's rancor by shedding

    The core of religion and faith, blood pouring forth

  105. إن القلوب التي ترمى تطير بها

    مصاحف الذكر والايمان لم يطر

    The blood of Ibn Wahb and Hurqus and their ink,

    Zayd ibn Husn - the elite of the Pure

  106. ما علقوها على أعناقهم غرضاً

    فاكفف سهامك واكسرها عن الزبر

    The blood of twenty thousand slain when you gathered them

    Amid worship, fierce as torrents of rain

  107. أعظمتها يوم أهل الدار ترفعها

    واليوم ترمى كرمى العفر والبقر

    May the blood make you shake, O Mansur, for it made

    The heavens and earths tremble in dread

  108. هانت عليك جباة ظلت ترضخها

    لطالما رضختها سجدة السحر

    Had your spear pierced Hurqus, all creation would have shared

    In casting them into Hellfire

  109. لم تقتل القوم عن سوء بدينهم

    وإنما الأمر مبني على القدر

    O Strife that wrought havoc on religion, its zealotry

    Melting stone in horror

  110. قتلتهم بروايات تقيم بها

    عذر القتال وليست عذر معتذر

    I am grieved to speak the truth - they

    Are a people you killed tyrannically, without excuse

  111. ما ذو الثدية إلا خدعة نصبت

    للحرب توهم فيها صحة الخبر

    Though they are saints of God - loving them

    Is obligatory, and hating them most abhorred

  112. وما حديث مروق القوم معتبر

    فيهم لمن سلك الانصاف في النظر

    May God pray on their souls and water

    Their bones from the origin and the abundance

  113. خلصت نفسك بالتحكيم منخدعاً

    وأنت أولى بها من سائر الفطر

    O Sedition that destroyed religion, its ardours

    Make solid matter melt in fear

  114. فحكموا اللّه واختاروك أنت لها

    فكان قولهم نوعاً من الهذر

    I do not regret speaking truth - they

    Are a people you killed unjustly, without excuse

  115. وقلت قد مرقوا إذ هم على قدم

    صدق من الحق لم يبطر ولم يجر

    And they are friends of God - loving them

    Is obligatory, and hating them most horrific

  116. مضوابه قدماً جريا على سنن

    للمصطفى وأبى بكر إلى عمر

    God prayed for their souls and watered

    Their bones from the original and the offspring

  117. ما بدل القوم في دار ولا جمل

    وهم على العهد ما حالوه بالغير

  118. شفيت نفسك من غيظ بها بدم

    من مهجة الدين والايمان منفجر

  119. دم ابن وهب وحرقوص وحبرهم

    زيد ابن حصن خيار الأمة الطهر

  120. دماء عشرين ألفاً وقت جمعتهم

    وسط الصلاة همت كالوابل الهمر

  121. ليهنك الدم يا منصور قد رجفت

    منه السموات والارضون من حذر

  122. لو أن رمحك في حرقوص اشتركت

    فيه الخليقة أرداهم إلى سقر

  123. يا فتنة فتكت بالدين حمتها

    تذوب من هولها ملمومة الحجر

  124. ما ساءني أن أقول الحق إنهم

    قوم قتلتهم بغيا بلا عذر

  125. وإنهم أولياء اللّه حبهم

    فرض وبغضهم من أفظع النكر

  126. صلى الإِله على أرواحهم وسقى

    أجدائهم روحه بالأصل والبكر
