1. We have souls, but today they are shrouded in darkness;

    and a rising generation, yet it is still in the cradle.

  2. Whenever we survey the ages of our pride,

    we see bones that bring nothing back and bring nothing forth.

  3. And if we examine the causes of our decline,

    we conclude that deadly ignorance is our scourge.

  4. Other nations have assumed pride of place upon the throne of our glory,

    only because we have held back from earnest striving.

  5. We were the lamp of glory before our flame died down;

    may that not be the last we know of our glories.

  6. O sons of my mother, set your mounts upon a straight course,

    for we journey toward neither lowland nor upland.

  7. We sacrifice the spirit of glory on the paths of our shame;

    at that, ashamed before glory, I bowed my head.
