1. When my breast grows tight,

    I make my complaint to God,

  2. return to patience,

    and ask God’s forgiveness.

  3. And when my affairs leave me bewildered

    by what God has decreed,

  4. I lament my affliction, that He may have mercy on my weeping.

    Far be it—never would You disappoint my hope.

  5. When night draws near,

    I ponder my faults;

  6. my tears flow like a torrent,

    drenching my gray hairs.

  7. And I cry out in woe:

    “Alas, O my sins!”

  8. My life has passed and gone, while I remain in blindness.

    Far be it—never would You disappoint my hope.

  9. I, O my Beloved,

    fall short in my deeds.

  10. My Physician has overpowered me,

    and within me is what he disapproves.

  11. Yet my Beloved

    will draw his veil over me;

  12. over every lapse, I have let my cloak fall.

    Far be it—never would You disappoint my hope.

  13. I do not desire life,

    nor do I choose death.

  14. I do not know what to do

    to attain that Abode.

  15. Yet I place my hope

    in the Knower of secrets,

  16. He who is worthy of all goodness—I have made Him my refuge.

    Far be it—never would You disappoint my hope.

  17. My beloved is Muhammad,

    O best of all creation,

  18. the servants’ watering-place,

    a pure draught.

  19. From the Pool I shall drink;

    I heal what—O...

  20. sweeter than honey, and in it is my cure.

    Far be it—never would You disappoint my hope.

  21. O Hannāsh, strive,

    and add to your praise

  22. of the glorified Guide.

    Your verse will grow sweet,

  23. that you may prosper and rejoice,

    through your night and your morning.

  24. Ah, O You who manifested Yourself, accept my prayer.

    Far be it—never would You disappoint my hope.
