The clouds wept; through their weeping they made laugh
the garden flowers, and the rivers overflowed.
The sun of day has come forth amid a multitude
of verdure—and within its mysteries are mysteries.
Spring came with its cavalry and its troops,
and eyes delighted in its beauty.
The rose summoned the arrivals to the harvest,
and birds and trees raced one another.
The cup dances, and the wine sparkles;
the air laughs, and the Beloved is visited.
The lute answers the fair maidens,
while the flute drowned out the frame drum’s voice.
Do not suppose forbidden music is our intent:
our flute is glorification and remembrance of God.
Our drink is drawn from His grace, and our song is:
How excellent the Beloved—the One, the All-Subduing!
The lute is the Beautiful One’s gracious ways, and our cup
is the cup of discernment; settledness is dignity.
So come together, become fragrant, and seize the opportunity
before death—for your lifetime is treacherous.
God is more merciful to the poor seeker when he comes
than his own parents are, for He is All-Forgiving.
Then blessings be upon the chosen Intercessor
as long as birds warble in their varied tongues.
