1. I shall not forget the beloved ones as long as I live,

since they journeyed far away to a distant place.

  2. They recited the verse of farewell, then fell down

in fear of separation, prostrate and weeping.

  3. At their remembrance, my tears stream

whenever I yearn, morning and evening.

  4. In the extremity of my longing, I whisper to God

as His servant Zechariah whispered to Him.

  5. My bones have grown frail from our distance; so grant me,

Lord, in kindness, from Your presence, a friend.

  6. Answer my prayer in love, for I

have never, Lord, been disappointed in praying to You.

  7. Separation has rent my heart—and truly,

the day of parting was a terrible thing.

  8. Their light vanished, so I called to my Lord

in the darkness of deepest night, with a secret cry.

  9. Our distance was not of my choosing, but

was a matter predestined and decreed.

  10. O my two companions, leave me to my longing;

I have the greater right to burn in its fire.

  11. In passion I have obedient tears,

a lovesick heart, and rebellious patience.

  12. Between my reproacher, my patience, and my heart,

I stand bewildered: which of them is most defiant?

  13. I am the master of love; whoever follows me,

I bring him to ruin in love, along a straight path.

  14. I am dead from love, but on the day I see them,

that day will be the day I am raised alive.
