I humbled myself through every land when you took me captive,
And spent my nights tossing in the torments of wayward love.
Had I two hearts, I would live on with one
And leave the other to be tortured by love of you.
But I have only one heart, and passion has possessed it;
So neither is life sweet to me, nor does death draw nearer.
Like a sparrow in the palm of a child who clasps it,
Tasting the throes of death while the child plays—
The child has no sense to pity what it suffers,
And the bird has no feathers to fly away.
For love’s anguish I came to be called “the Madman,”
And throughout the tribe my plight became proverbial.
O company of lovers, die of ardent longing,
As Qays died, tormented by separation.
