هدّدِني جهلاً رقاش وليتني

وكُلّ رقاشيٍّ على الأرض في الحبلِ

Ignorantly, Raqash threatened me - would that

I and every other Raqash on earth were in ropes!

فباستِ حُضين واست أمٍّ رمت به

فبئس محلُّ الضيفِ في الزمن المحل

For he is of a vile cradle and an ignoble mother,

Evil is the lodging of a guest in such an age.

وإن أنا لم أترك رقاش وجمعهم

أذلَّ على وطء الهوان من النعل

Had I not left Raqash and his band,

I would be more humiliated than a sandal’s sole.

فشَلَّت يداي واتبعت سوى الهدى

سبيلاً ولا وفّقت للخير والفضلِ

My hands failed me, and I followed other than guidance

A path, succeeding not in virtue or merit.

عظام الخُصى ثُطُّ اللحى معدن الخنا

مباخيل بالأزوادِ في الخصب والأزلِ

Bones of impotence, lips of filth, source of villainy -

Debauched with insolence in plenty and eternity.

إذا أمنوا ضرّاءَ دهرٍ تعاظلوا

عظالَ الكلابِ في الدجنَّةِ والوجلِ

When they feel secure from time’s calamities, they rebel

Insolent as dogs in comfort and tranquility.

وإن عضَّهم دهرُ بنكبةِ حادثٍ

فأخورُ عيداناً من المَرخِ والأثلِ

And if time wounds them with the strike of events,

They become like staffs of withered, slender trees.

أسودُ شرىً وسطَ الندي ثعالبٌ

إذا حظرت حربُ مراجلها تغلي

Black-fated jackals amid the valleys, foxes

When war’s heat stirs their dens - they boil!
