Ah, all my anguish! Ah, all my sorrow!
Ah, the heart’s grief over all that befell us!
We forsook faith and worldly life alike,
and left behind our wives and sons.
We were not a people devoted to faith,
who would endure affliction when put to the test;
nor were we a people devoted to this world,
who would defend it—though we sought no worldly gain.
We left our homes to the vile rabble of ʿAkk,
the village Nabataeans and the Ashʿarites.
