يَقولُ لَنا غَيرَ ما يُضرَبُ
وَيُضرَبُ غَيرَ الَّذي نَحسُبُ
He sings to us something other than what is played,
And plays something other than what we expect—
كَكيسانَ يَكتُبُ غَيرَ الَّذي
يَقولُ المُحَدِّثُ وَالمُكتِبُ
Like Kaysān, who writes something other than what
The traditionist and the writing master say.
فَيَكتُبُ غَيرَ الَّذي قالَهُ
وَيَقرَأُ غَيرَ الَّذي يُكتَبُ
Thus he writes something other than what was said,
And reads something other than what is written.
فَصَمتاً إِذا شِئتَ إِطرابَنا
فَنَحنُ إِذا قُلتَ لا نَطرَبُ
So keep silent, if you wish to delight us;
For when you speak, we feel no delight.
وَلا تَأتِيَنّي إِذا جِئتَني
فَإِنّي إِذا جِئتَني أَذهُبُ
And do not come to me when you visit me,
For when you visit me, I leave.
