جَلَبَ المَجاعَةَ ضامِرٌ بُخلُ
قَد خِلتُ فيهِ لِضَعفِهِ سُلّا
Gaunt with miserliness, he brought on famine;
from his frailty, I thought he had consumption.
طِفلٌ وَلَكِن أَمرُهُ عَجَبٌ
قَد عادَ بَعدَ كُهولَةٍ طِفلا
A child—yet his condition is a marvel:
after maturity, he has returned a child.
قَد كانَ حَمَّلَ لَيلَتَينِ فَلَم
تَرَ مِثلَهُ طِفلاً وَلا حَمَلا
He had been carried off for burial, yet never
have you seen his like, among children or lambs.
وَمِنَ العَجائِبِ أَن يَعودَ فَتىً
في سَبعَ عَشرَةَ لَيلَةٍ كَهلا
And among the wonders is that a youth should become,
in seventeen nights, a man grown old.
