How many a need I have laid
before a nobleman of a people—or a knave—
only to find the noble among the base,
or the base among the noble!
Glory be to an all-powerful Lord
who fashioned humankind from earth’s skin:
their highborn and their lowborn
are alike in folly and blame.
So little good is in their wealthy;
their rich man is like one with nothing.
And when you put their best man to the test,
you find him beneath their worst.
Call upon them neither for the smallest
of affairs nor for the greatest.
Look at the enormous size of their bodies,
but do not ask them to ward off anything formidable.
